Sam Rasoul, the Democratic candidate for Congress in Virginia's Sixth District, delivered this speech at the Virginia Young Democrats breakfast during the 2008 Virginia Democratic Convention. Note: I started filming about 10 seconds into the speech, and the recording was interrupted for a few seconds in the middle. So, these remarks aren't presented in their entirety, but pretty close. The consensus on Capitol Hill is in: Vito is finito
from Crooks and Liars May 08, 2008
Being from New York, this one kinda hits home for me even though I m from Long Island, not Staten Island. Congressman Vito Fossella (D R- NY) has landed himself in big, big trouble. Not only was he picked up on a DUI charge in Virginia, but a sex scandal seems to be emerging as the details start coming out. Fossella, who was driving at 2x the legal limit, has given conflicting accounts about where he was going when he got pinched. First, he claimed to be picking his sick daughter at her house. The only problem is that the address he gave officers was that of retired Lt. Col. Laura Fay, who ended up retrieving him from the police station. Download | Play Download | Play (headline and videos via Scarce) It gets worse. From the WaPo: Fossella was specific with the arresting officer about where he was headed. He gave a street name where he said he was picking up his daughter. That street, it turns out, is the same street where retired Lt. Col. Laura Fay lives with her three-year-old daughter. Fay, according to the New York Daily News, picked up Fossella from the police station. When asked by the Daily News earlier this week whether Fossella fathered Fay s daughter, Fossella s crisis communications consultant, Susan Del Percio, declined to answer. This is a demeaning and highly inappropriate question, she said. If it weren t true, why not just deny it? You may be asking yourself: Why does this matter to me? Well, it just so happens that Fossella occupies a hotly contested seat that could very well go blue this year. I sympathize with the drunk-driving adulterer, but it doesn t seem likely he ll be able to defend his seat this year. UPDATE: Turns out that Fossella has admitted to being the baby daddy.

4-11-08 E. Fishkill Superfund Congressional Hearing 2 of 14
from YouTube :: Tag // newyork April 23, 2008
The House Transportation and Infrastructure Subcommittee on Water Resources and the Environment, of which Hall is a member, held a hearing Friday on water pollution and cleanup, touching on hazardous Superfund sites in the area. Between 80 and 100 people attended the hearing at the East Fishkill town hall. "What has happened here is directly happening to the Superfund program on a national basis," Hall said. "One of the most common threads is TCE." Hopewell Junction residents have been plagued by trichloroethylene, or TCE, a chemical the Hopewell Precision plant dumped into the ground during the 1970s. Some people who were exposed to TCE have been diagnosed with cancer, kidney and liver damage and other illnesses. Besides Hall, subcommittee Chairwoman Rep. Eddie Bernice Johnson, D-Texas, and Rep. John Boozman, R-Ark., heard statements from activist Debra Hall, East Fishkill Supervisor John Hickman, an EPA official and state officials. Hall and Rep. Maurice Hinchey, D-Hurley, are pushing for the TCE Reduction Act that would require the Environmental Protection Agency to set stricter regulations to protect residents from TCE exposure. It's the House companion bill to one introduced by Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton, D-N.Y. Debra Hall, founder of Hopewell Junction Citizens for Clean Water, wants the government to take action. "The EPA must promulgate a protective standard for trichloroethylene, one of the contaminants that polluted my private well as well as the air in my home," said Hall, who is not related to the congressman. "Five parts per billion is no longer acceptable." Sites such as the Hopewell Precision and the Shenandoah Road Groundwater Contamination Area Superfund sites are on the EPA's Superfund National Priority List because they are considered severely polluted sites. There are five active Superfund sites in the 19th Congressional District Hall represents. New York state has a TCE standard for groundwater of 5 parts per billion, said G. Anders Carlson, director for the Division of Environmental Health Investigation for the Center for Environmental Health under the state Department of Health. The state has an air guideline for TCE at 5 micrograms per cubic meter. The guideline is just that, a guide - not a legally enforceable standard, he said. "That (Hall's) legislation is intended to move the process along," Carlson said. "We believe we have everything to promulgate the process." The EPA is addressing vapor intrusion at several Superfund sites in the 19th Congressional District - conducting air samples, installing ventilation systems in homes and doing other remediation, according to George Pavlou, director of the division of Emergency and Remedial Response of the EPA, Region 2. Debra Hall supports the proposed TCE Reduction Act. She also urged Congress to reinstate the Superfund tax on companies that caused contamination and provide property tax relief to residents. "Instead of taxing Hopewell Precision, the government is allowing the company to laugh all the way to the bank.," she said. "It was allowed to lower its property assessment by almost 80 percent because the property is contaminated, because of themselves. The law is different for homeowners."
