Translation: Recitativo ARSACES I ask ye not, ye woes I bear, to leave me long in pleasing peace; some moments only from his care Arsaces' fighting soul release. Come, sweet oblivion, haste away, restore my weary wounded breast; my anguish for a while delay, and marble make my bed of rest. (A melancholy symphony is heard.) Leslie Uggams - I honsetly love you - Concert with Frank Sin
from YouTube :: Tag // sitcom September 23, 2008
Leslie Uggams (born May 25, 1943, New York City) is American actress and singer, perhaps best known for her Tony Award-winning work in Hallelujah, Baby! Uggams first started in show business as a child in 1950, playing the niece of Ethel Waters on the television series Beulah. She was a regular on Sing Along with Mitch, starring record producer/conductor Mitch Miller. In 1960 she sang "Give Me That Old Time Religion" in the film Inherit the Wind. She would audition for the lead part in the film Cleopatra, but would lose out to Elizabeth Taylor. Actress Dorothy Dandridge was also in the running, when director Rouben Mamoulian was to direct, but her part was lost when the director was taken off the project.[1][2] The Leslie Uggams Show, a television variety show added to her list of credits and a lead role in Roots, as Kizzy. Uggams also starred in the 1975 film Poor Pretty Eddy (also called Poor Pretty Eddie, Black Vengeance and Redneck County), in which she played a popular singer who, upon being stranded in the deep South, is abused and humiliated by the perverse denizens of a backwoods town. Uggams appeared on TV gameshow Hollywood Squares. After being asked if Roman legend says that God made the people of the world in a large oven, fellow contestant Paul Lynde looked at her and remarked "Looks like you were overcooked". Uggams guest starred on The Muppet Show during it's third season. During the 1980s she appeared in Blues in the Night, Jerry's Girls, and replaced Patti LuPone as Reno Sweeney in the Lincoln Center revival of Cole Porter's musical Anything Goes. Later Broadway roles include Muzzy in Thoroughly Modern Millie and Ethel Thayer in On Golden Pond at the Cort Theatre. In 1996, Uggams played the role of Rose Keefer on All My Children. She is a member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority. Early in 2009, Uggams will make an appearance as the legendary jazz singer Lena Horne in a production of the stage musical "Stormy Weather" at the Pasadena Playhouse in California.Tony and Emmy Award-winning actress/singer Leslie Uggams most recently thrilled Broadway audiences performing as Ethel Thayer opposite James Earl Jones in the revival of Ernest Thompson's On Golden Pond. That performance came on the heels of her stunning portrayal of the off-beat society heiress Muzzy Van Hossmere in the Tony-award winning musical Thoroughly Modern Millie. photo That's just the latest accomplishment for a woman who has been captivating stage, screen and television audience since her national television debut at age six on the TV series Beulah, portraying the niece of Ethel Waters. Appearances on Your Show of Shows, The Milton Berle Show and The Arthur Godfrey Show led to center stage at the legendary Apollo Theater in Harlem where 7 year-old Leslie opened for such legends as Louise Armstrong, Ella Fitzgerald, and Dinah Washington. Leslie attended the New York Professional Children's School, and, at 15, she appeared on the CBS-TV series Name That Tune. Her appearance proved to be fortuitous. Mitch Miller, head of recordings for Columbia Records, was so impressed by her vocal talents that he signed her to a recording contract and then made her a regular on Sing.A musical career came virtually by inheritance to African-American entertainer Leslie Uggams. Her father sang with the Hall Johnson Choir, and her mother was a chorus dancer. At age 6, Leslie was appearing with Ethel Waters in the TV sitcom The Beulah Show; at eight, she was featured on Paul Whiteman's TV Teen Club; and from eight to twelve, she sang on tour in big-city theatres and showed up in guests spots on shows starring the likes of Arthur Godfrey, Milton Berle and Garry Moore. A graduate of the Professional Children's School of New York, Uggams "retired" from show business at age 12--only to reemerge as a contestant (and singer) on the TV game show Name That Tune.Later on in 1960, Uggams was showcased to perfection as the offscreen singer of "Old Time Religion" in the opening scenes of the movie Inherit the Wind. While a student at Julliard in 1961, Ms. Uggams was hired to be regular female vocalist on Sing Along With Mitch, an otherwise all-male (and all-white) songfest hosted by Mitch Miller.A major star by 1969, Uggams became the first black female performer to host her own TV series since Hazel Scott in the '50s; alas, The Leslie Uggams Show became the latest in a long list of casualties to its powerhouse competition Bonanza.The next two decades were a kaleidescope of lofty heights and dismal depths for Uggams. But when she triumphed, it was big-time: She was brilliant as Kizzy in the groundbreaking 1977 TV saga Roots, and no less superb in a key role on a 1979 mini-series, Backstairs at the White House.Leslie Uggams' last regular television stint was as cohost of a nighttime audience participation series, Fantasy, in 1983. The series didn't last, but Uggams managed to grab an Emmy award for her efforts. Rede Globo de Televisão
from YouTube :: Tag // brasil September 10, 2008
Antonio Vivaldi "Cessate, omai cessate" Sara Mingardo (1/2)
from YouTube :: Videos by civileso August 17, 2008
High resolution and stereo sound: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TaNLyFZH_n0 in the following recitative he prepares to die; in the last aria he pictures himself as the "shade of a Bacchante" on the gloomy banks of Acheron, ready to take revenge. So we have a conventional, but complete plot. ... As for the content, there is a mixture of ferocity and commiseration arising from the fact that the singer addresses two different objects: his "cruel memories" and his "wretched, injured and forsaken heart". Only in the last two verses does cruelty pertain no longer to the memories but to the beloved's "pitiless countenance" and "faithless soul", Dorilla's cruelty being emphasized, in the score, by a unison of all the instruments." ... The first recitative makes the work more expressive and, by virtue of its double character, seems to have been given the function of introducing the cantata as a whole rather than just its first aria." Translation (by Luigi Cataldi): Recitativo Cease, henceforth cease, cruel memories of a despotic love; heartless and pitiless, you have turned my happiness into immense sorrow. Cease, henceforth cease to tear my breast, to pierce my soul, to rob my heart of peace and calm. Wretched, injured and forsaken you are, my heart, if a tyrannical passion can rob you of tranquillity because a pitiless countenance, a faithless soul, harbours and nurtures nothing but cruelty. Aria Ah, ungrateful Dorilla wishes me to remain unhappy; ah, ever more pitilessly she forces out my tears. For me there is no remedy, for me no more hope. Only death will assuage my bitter pain and sorrow. Vengo, spelonche amate, vengo, spechi graditi, alfine meco involto in mio tormento in voi resti sepolto. Translation (by Luigi Cataldi): Recitativo So it is to you, gloomy places, silent horrors, lonely caves and friendly shades, that I come and bring my grief, because I hope to obtain from you a pity that is not to be found in ungrateful Dorilla. Beloved caves, I come, I come, welcoming places, until finally, racked by my pains, I will bury myself in you. Aria In this horrible refuge, sheltering from my pains, I shall be able to give vent to my grief, to call out: 'Dorilla heartless and ungrateful', and to die. I'll go to the gloomy banks of Acheron, staining that stream with my blameless blood, crying for revenge and, like the shade of a Bacchante, I will take my revenge.
