From : Weekday Podcast
The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change recently concluded that disturbances from pests, diseases and fire will have serious impacts on our forests. There will be longer fire seasons and larger areas burned. This year, the Forest Service has nearly exhausted its budget fighting the fires in California. Is there a more effective way to spend our money to prevent fires in the first place? Should we even try? Forests used to burn more frequently, it was part of their natural cycle, but as more homes are built on the edge of wilderness areas, the focus is fire suppression rather than fire prevention. How should our forests here in the Pacific Northwest be managed to prevent large scale fires? Should we let timber companies harvest excess deadwood? Or could extra wood be burned instead of coal or gas in rural electricity generators? Perhaps we should start fires more regularly to get rid of the dead wood before it accumulates?

 From : RN Breakfast-individual stories
When it comes to science, we constantly search for new technological breakthroughs. But today, there's news that one group of scientists are making the globe's seal population do scientific research for us. Elephant seals typically travel between 35 and 65 kilometres every day, and in our Southern Oceans they are able to collect a wide range of data humans simply don't have access to. Now there's hope that this data could provide accurate information about sea ice production and its influence on global climate.

 From : The Conversation Podcast
The Seattle City Council votes Monday on taxi cab legislation. It's supposed to improve customer service. What do you think of Seattle's cab service? Do you drive a cab? The proposed changes would make more taxi cab licenses available and require that taxis be fuel efficient by 2013. Is that what's needed? Do we need other changes? Also, the D.J. who calls himself Girl Talk takes clips of rap and pop to create what he calls original music. iTunes cited legal worries in their decision to stop selling his last album. Art always draws from other art, but does this go too far? Where do you draw the line?

 From : Weekday Podcast
Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper, German Chancellor Angela Merkel and Britain's Prince Charles are all boycotting the opening of the Beijing Olympics. President Bush will attend, however. The U.S. has long had a policy of constructive engagement with China. Has doing business with China helped improve life in the country? Have preparations for the Olympic games made things better, or worse? Chinese officials point to national reforms, technological advances, and greater freedoms overall, but have the Olympics helped to improve human rights in China? Nobody has called for a boycott of the Games. Not even the Dalai Lama. Are Beijing's Olympics a missed opportunity? Or should politics not be involved in the Olympic games?Plus, Cliff Mass joins us with a weekend weather forecast.
