It s the Bandwidth, Stupid by Andrew McCaskey It should come as no surprise - taking a survey among technically aware consumers - that HDTV was way down on the list in comparison with good connectivity and dependable high speed internet access. I m still amazed at the attempts by some vendors like DirecTv trying to bundle a triple play by aligning with a local telco for DSL high speed service. I can afford this attitude only because I m in a Comcast High Speed area, as much as 9 Mb/second down and 1.7Mb up. Backup and mobile access is a EVDO card- not the speed but hopefully backup only. If Verizon ever gets here with the FiOS service - whatever the price- I m ready to write the check. Actually, by the time you figure the other connectivity checks that I write, Verizon FiOS is going to be a bargain. And when the Wimax overlay gets here, I ll grab that one as well. The vendors are selling the wrong Triple Play. Triple play is insuring that you have three ways to connect to the internet. Rooting for Wimax by Andrew McCaskey I have to be honest - I d like to see Wimax see the light of day in the US- and provide some competition to 4G LTE which maybe, just maybe arrive in two years. The new Sprint-Clearwire deal, with substantial backing from Comcast and other deep pockets could serve a break on the ATT and Verizon duopoly that seems to be emerging. It s especially relevant after the Google filing last Friday where Verizon digs deep into some technicalities in the 700Mhz bid on Open Access, and comes up with some sort of deal where - of all things - Verizon subscribers would be exempted and forced into the Verizon walled garden while open access is extended to others. I can imagine the cross billing on that one. =================== 31 Days of the Dragon The 31 days are in full swing, with contests in progress now . COMCAST and TIME WARNER CABLE are in discussions to fund a WiMax joint venture with SPRINT and CLEARWIRE. The current deal calls for Comcast to invest $1 billion and TWC to put in $500 million. Bright House Networks, Google and Intel may also participate. In exchange for funding, the cable companies will receive equity as well as the ability to use the networks for wireless data and voice services at wholesale rates. Of course, this is just the latest development in the ongoing cable-telco conversions, where cable delves into voice and data and telcos enter the television space. GOOGLE announced that it will give up control of the OpenSocial application platform and establish a non-profit foundation to oversee the venture. Yahoo and MySpace have committed to joining the new entity, ensuring a large user base. OpenSocial was created as Google s response to the Facebook application platform. It allows developers to create one application that can be deployed across all member networks with little or no additional coding. Facebook has not joined and will continue to focus on its own closed application platform. CREATIVE ARTISTS AGENCY, PEQUOT CAPITAL and MLB ADVANCED MEDIA will unveil WePlay.com, a new social network focused on youth sports. The site will act as a hub for posting profiles, game schedules, highlight videos, car pool arrangements and just about anything related to children s involvement in athletics. The site will also offer rare home videos of superstar athletes as children, shooting hoops in their parents driveways and in their high school gyms. Major athletes have been digging trough closets looking for old videotapes and memorabilia to add to the site. With the support of top athletes and the online capabilities of MLBAM, this is worth keeping an eye on. MTV unveiled a number of short-form projects that will be offered on the network, the web and via mobile devices. The shows include North Palm Wrestling, a five minute sketch show, and Anton a claymation version of Jackass. MTV also announced that it is collaborating with CollegeHumor.com to develop a network show and, most importantly, bringing Rock Band to the Wii. SONY BMG is developing its own online music subscription service. Subscribers would pay between $9 and $12 a month for unlimited access to the entire Sony BMG catalog. The service will reportedly work with a number of devices, including the market-leading iPod. The company is looking to bring other music labels and mobile phone operators into the venture, which currently has no exact release date. Read more at http://www.ShellyPalmer.com

Rounding down to zero? Don't be ridiculous. Forcing ISPs to monitor and filter Internet traffic in order to guarantee that music artists continue to make money, so that the ISPs feel some sort of moral obligation to keep U2 in fancy leather pants. It sounds illogical when you put it that way, right? We thought so.

January 30, 2008

JEFF ZUCKER delivered the NATPE keynote yesterday, warning that the television industry is undergoing a forest fire. He discussed his decision to reduce pilot season and possibly curtail upfront expenditures as necessary steps toward making less waste. Zucker s goal is to make NBC everywhere - from NBC.com to Hulu and beyond. He said the industry s major challenge is to work with advertisers to create a next-generation advertising model that will help monetize online video. NEXT.TV has launched a beta of its 100-channel free online VOD service featuring content from Showtime Networks, CBS, Hearst and more. Paid movie rentals and downloads will also be available with content provided by 20th Century Fox, Disney, Lionsgate, Sony, Warner Bros., Paramount and more. The service currently comes with certain HP laptops but will see a general release in March. TV RATINGS have shown some major declines in the most recent year-over-year ratings due to the effects of the WGA strike. In the 18-49 demographic NBC is down 7%, Fox is down 15%, ABC is down 23% and CBS is down 26%. CW has been hurt worst of all, losing 50% of viewers compared to last year s numbers. LANDMARK COMMUNICATIONS will sell two television stations in Nashville and Las Vegas. The company is evaluating the future of its other businesses, which include The Weather Channel and its popular weather.com. That property alone could fetch $5 billion. Landmark has not officially stated exactly why it is selling its assets but everything is under review and possibly up for sale. YAHOO officially announced plans to layoff 1,000 employees, which is 7% of its entire workforce. Cuts will be made in precise areas and specific projects in an attempt to turn the company around. Yahoo delivered the news along with a 23% decline in 4Q profits. That brought the already suffering stock down 10% to reach a four year low. PLUS: SPECTRUM BIDDING in the 700 MHz auction has quickly passed $8 billion. MYSPACE will officially open its site to developers next Tuesday, allowing Facebook-like applications. MICROSOFT will provide search and contextual ads to Wall Street Journal sites, while the Journal adds Facebook integration that allows online friends to share article recommendations. Lastly, SPRINT will resume talks with CLEARWIRE about partnering to create a nationwide WiMAX network. Get the full story at http://www.Media30.com.

Steve weirded us out a little when his Jobs-note ended without "one more thing," but dudes, we totally called the MacBook Air! Well, OK--everyone called the MacBook Air. Also, Tom's Apple TV becomes slightly more useful, iPod Touch owners get a rude little jolt, and Google shows up on the iPhone *and* in a new partnership with WiMax operator Clearwire. It's that last part we find interesting.

In today's episode, the Buzz army (European forces) mobilize to fight back against the rampant generalizations of Brian Cooley. Oh, and hey, you guys have the iPhone now! Which you don't even need, because you get way cooler phones for far less money all the time. Sigh. In other news, Sony's CEO now says the high-def format war is in a "stalemate." That, by the way, is an official tune change.
