The Saudi Arabia of Coal
from popular posts - blip.tv (beta) September 30, 2008
With the vast coal reserves still untapped in the U.S., companies are taking this "dirty" fuel and turning it into a viable green resource.Green coal might sound like an oxymoron, but according to Tim Vail, CEO of Synthesis Energy, coal can be environmentally-friendly, depending on the process -- and if there is a use for the CO2 by-product. "Our process (Synthesis Energy) is definitely a clean process. We don't combust coal; we convert it in a high-pressure, high temperature environment. If we don't combust the coal in the first place, we don't create the set of regulated emissions normally associated with coal." But the question remains: What about the harmful CO2 emissions? Synthesis Energy may not produce the harmful emissions normally associated with coal, but CO2 is produced through their conversion process. "We do produce CO2, the difference being that we have already captured the CO2 as part of the process, and we can deliver it at very high levels of purity and under pressure. So if there is a use for the CO2, such as for an enhanced oil recovery, we can supply the necessary resources. And if there isn't a use, we look for sequestration opportunities to be able to order to store CO2." If you're pondering over the necessity of coal use, Christopher Poirier of CoalTek breaks it down quite nicely. "Fifty-two percent of our existing infrastructure and power generation in the U.S. comes from coal. Here in the U.S. alone, we produce and consume about 1.2 billion tons of coal a year, and the number is growing, not shrinking. So it is an enormous domestic resource for us -- the U.S. being a wellspring of 28% of the world's reserves. There is, by some estimates, more energy in the ground in the state of Wyoming than there is energy in the ground of the entire Middle East." "We are the Saudi Arabia of coal." Erik Straser of Mohr Davidow Ventures gives us a poignant and amusing analogy for the levels of the fossil fuels. "If you think of natural gases as being the champagne of fossil fuels, oil is the wine, and coal is basically the beer. So when we use natural gas to upgrade oil to be put into refineries, we basically use champagne to make wine at best, but not usually beer." Straser believes that technology will be used to "focus on attacking the large, lowest commodity priced of hydrocarbon," to convert the low-rank coals into hydrocarbons that can be used for either transportation or as a natural gas. We can expect great things from the coal family of fuels, as this new class of companies continues to innovate and use it as an efficient, clean energy source. By Jessica Chung

Vinod Khosla: Clean-Tech Is About Reinventing Society
from Beet.TV September 25, 2008
The focus of clean-tech, or as well-known venture capitalist Vinod Khosla prefers to call it, "main-tech," isn't wind and corn ethanol. "It's about the mainstream things we use in life and essentially reinventing society," he says. Cleantech will impact technologies like engines, lighting, and refridgerators, which have markets worth hundreds of billions of dollars. Khosla has invested in a number of companies exploring more energy-efficient technologies. "Almost any area you look at, there's so much innovation going on...The list is endless," he says. Andy interviewed Khosla on the MIT campus yesterday, where Khosla delivered a keynote speech about energy and clean-tech at the MIT Technology Review EmTech08 conference. Martin LaMonica at CNET has a report on the speech at CNET. --Kelsey Blodget, Associate Producer

Episode 10 - Serious Materials
from popular posts - blip.tv (beta) July 16, 2008
Serious Materials specializes in cleantech materials that require minimal energy to manufacture and utilize in homes. Their EcoRock material is functionally equivalent to conventional drywall technology, but requires virtually no energy to manufacture, and their extremely high-insulating window technology requires significantly less energy consumption during heating and cooling. These could have a tremendous impact on the environment, since currently 52% of CO2 emissions are from the "built environment." In this interview, I sit down with Kevin Surace, CEO of Serious Materials, and he describes their technology, and also gives his take on the energy crisis and how cleantech building materials can significantly contribute to addressing the problem.

Freshtopia.net - How To Ruin A Perfectly Good Grapefruit
from PodTech.net February 05, 2008
This recipe was inspired by Anthony, aka the Raw Model, and his nifty list of 5 things to eat every day for health and beauty. It was a well-intentioned soup, simple and unassuming, comprised of some of my very favorite things to eat, all in one convenient bowl. What we ended up with however, was a watery bowl of grayish-green horror, with a crime-scene chili swirl. Sorry Anthony. Despite the soup's tragic disposition, the episode may be worth a check-out, if nothing more than as a cautionary tale. "What not to do with grapefruits." The music, by our friend Justin Winokur , is great, and there is a healthy dose of nervous laughs to accompany. If we're still friends after you watch this, consider tuning in next week. Among other things we'll be showing you how to make our variation of green lemonade, as well as blogging up a storm. Here's the recipe, so you know what to avoid... Sundried Tomato-Chipotle Swirl: 1/3C olive oil 1/4C sundried tomatoes 1 small dried chipotle pepper 1t mustard Sea salt and pepper to taste Grapefruit Avocado Soup: 2 large grapefruit, peel and pith removed 1 large avocadoTags: grapefruit, raw food, soup

blueEnergy: Focused on Sustainable Development
from PodTech.net February 08, 2008
San Francisco-based blueEnergy provides sustainable energy services to isolated communities in Nicaragua. Mathias Craig, executive director and chairman of the board of the nonprofit corporation, was on-hand last year to receive the prestigious Accenture Economic Development Award at the Tech Museum Awards, presented by Aplied Materials. He spoke to PodTech for this video podcast, live at the Tech Museum. blueEnergy brings electrification to remote regions by building power systems that convert energy from wind turbines to battery power. Their efforts have brought lighting and refrigeration to towns along the Caribbean coast on Nicaragua, where less than 20 percent of the population has ready access to electricity. Their systems are built from scratch, relying on local labor that ends up providing training of local laborers, increasing skills and local economic opportunities, while providing a critical necessity for continued economic development through electricity. Long before his efforts in Nicaragua earned him and his growing company high-profile status as one of CNN's "Community Crusader" 2007 Heroes, Craig and his brother were aware of the need for electricity in rural Nicaragua. Their mother, a linguist, spent time in the remote region, where only about 20 percent of the settlements have electrification. Check out video of the award presentation at the Tech Awards, as well as links to lots of coverage of blueEnergy's efforts. And of course, check out Mathias's blog, on socialedge.org.
