Hillary Clinton spoke today (Sunday, August 24) at the United Farm Workers 18th Constitutional Convention in Fresno. Her 15:32 minute talk is below in a .mp3 audio format. Also below are photos from the convention. Clinton was the last speaker at the convention and her speech was interrupted by emergency sirens and orders to leave the convention hall. She refused to leave and eventually finished her (brief) presentation.

Bruce Raynor, UNITE HERE International president, spoke at the United Farm Workers 18th Constitutional Convention in Fresno California. An .mp3 audio file of his speech is below. Raynor gave a powerful class conscious speech uniting low income workers from restaurants to the fields, calling on universal health care, and a strong emphasis on organizing the unorganized.

Residents in West Fresno are concerned that the city wants to convert the Frank Ball Community Center into a Police Activity League (PAL) facility. A community meeting, which many people were only given hours notice of, erupted into a "lively" dialog as residents confronted city staff.

Santa Clara County Supervisor Ken Yeager presided over the first two same-gender marriages in his office at 9am this morning. on average, the County of Santa Clara Clerk-Recorder's office performs 12 marriages a day, but on this day, that number had already been surpassed by noon. The conservative power structure in Fresno attempted to have a "Christian Only" prayer service at City Hall as a part of the National Day of Prayer. Their exclusionary event was thwarted when members of the Interfaith Alliance of Central California showed up holding signs saying One Nation/Many Faiths. The 7 minute video (below) is an interview with Luke Scarmazzo and Monica Valencia. Both Scarmazzo and Valencia were arrested in the September 2006 raid of a medical marijuana dispensary in Modesto California. The case, which is being heard in Federal Court, started this week in Fresno.

The Runner Initiative (the Safe Neighborhood Act) takes aim on gangs and crime. Opponents say more resources should go to education, job training, and community-based crime prevention programs. The author of the initiative (Three Strikes and Your Out) Mike Reynolds, turned in over 700,000 signatures today to get the proposal on the November 2008 ballot.

The Carrisalez family and their supporters held a press conference today to discuss the shooting of Jesse Carrisalez at Roosevelt High School by a Fresno Police Department officer. Elisa Ortega, Jesse's sister, said "my brother shouldn't have died. He was too young. He was a good kid that wanted to live." A 14:43 minute video of that press conference is below.

Saeeda Islam, of Mexican and Pakistani heritage, addresses Cesar Chavez Day Rally in State Capitol. Representing CAIR Sacramento, Saeeda spoke of the impact of the Iraq War on domestic policies in the United States.

This is a 19 minute audio recording of an interview with Bruce Tracy and Al Williams, two homeless men in Fresno, about what life is like on the mean streets of Fresno. The host is Mike Rhodes. On March 19, 2008, people gathered all across America and around the world to protest the US occupation of Iraq. This street corner demonstration was one of the many events that occurred in Sacramento, CA on this day, the fifth Anniversary of the Invasion.

A memo leaked to the Associated Press earlier this month states the Chinook Salmon population from the Sacramento San Joaquin Delta is at an all time low. Scientists with state and federal agencies suggest it could be climate change and or changing ocean conditions. Conservation groups and fisherman say the real cause is water diversions for Central Valley agricultural producers and Southern California developers.
