This video is a brief update on the working information we have to go by about the jammer - the company supplying China with the equipment used, the frequencies of stations it is jamming (which is relatively pointless because there are so many) and the general uneasy feeling about the whole thing. I was surprised by the interest in the Firedrake radio jammer - other people have heard it, and lot's of people who listen to shortwave radio know it's there. Although, China hasn't mentioned anything publicly. No western government has said anything. It's pretty much business as usual. In the lead up to the Olympics, the jammer's use seems to be increasing. Just over a month ago, China's regime also began exerting pressure on the one and only carrier of NTDTV, an independent news source, and cut off the satellite that it used to broadcast into China: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mpCjpbrP9Ng http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VChnlx_Ph44 NTDTV themselves didn't bow to pressure, just the company that leases them use of the satellite. Case in point: The State Administration for Radio, Film and Television tells Variety that the upcoming release of The Mummy 3 Tomb of the Dragon Emperor is still pending until Universal makes unspecified changes to the flick. The censors didn't give any details about what would have to be cut from the film, but speculation has it that the source of the problem is "usually themes involving ghosts are taboo in China". Emperor sets the new and improved O'Connell family (Brendan Fraser, Luke Ford, and Maria Bello) smack dab in the middle of another adventure battling a tyrannical emperor (Jet Li) and his legion of undead armies. Universal already made some concessions to the Chinese government in exchange for permission to shoot on location. According to Variety Universal was urged to make the film, "less political and more focused on fantasy than real history" -- Less political? Now that's a word I would have never associated with the Mummy franchise. A flack for Universal has already released a statement saying, "Universal does not anticipate any obstacles to clearing the film for China and looks forward to releasing "The Mummy: Tomb of The Dragon Emperor" in the country where it was set and shot." Translation: We just spent $145 million bucks on this movie, and we want some of those Chinese box-office dollars. Emperor is just the latest Hollywood production to get a rough deal from Chinese censors, but at least they are in good company. the video im responding to, please watch it: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=olqsS6nzdhI unfortunately, video responses are disabled on that video, so you have to follow the link, i cant post it as a response. poorly defined concepts like ``hatespeech´´ or ``offensive´´ turn into a great danger for freedom of speech, if those concepts are used as a justification for censorship. if you think that some kind of censorship is necessary to keep your website clean, you need to be AS SPECIFIC AS POSSIBLE. for example: you could say that you take down videos that promote violence, and videos that contain pornography / full nudity. then you should remove the ability to flag for ``hatespeech´´, and allow flagging for the specific reasons only, like for example ``pornography / full nudity´´ or ``this video promotes violence´´. but hatespeech as a justification for censorship just DESTROYS freedom of speech.
