South Ossetia
from YouTube :: Videos by AlJazeeraEnglish August 11, 2008
The current fighting in Ossetia broke out on Thursday. Georgian forces launched a surprise attack to regain control of South Ossetia, which has had de facto independence since the end of civil war in 1992. With the majority of the population in Ossetia being Russian, this attack has propelled Russian forces to intervene. Georgia's intention to join NATO has sparked tensions, as Russia views NATO expansion in the Caucasus as an infringement on its circle of influence. The fact that Georgia is a vital route for Russian oil, as well as the LNG pipeline into Europe, adds another dimension to the rapidly changing situation. Inside Story asks: Who are the likely winners and losers in this conflict and who has the power to end it? Ivan Tchijevsky - Diggin' Up Two Rare Concerts
from Paris DJs Podcast August 05, 2008
Ivan Tchijevsky - Diggin' Up Two Rare Concerts (exclusive mix for ParisDJs.com) 2008-08-04 Tracklisting : 01. One day In Kiev - Jazz Ensemble 'Mugam' 02. Concert for the voice by Constantine Petrosyan Info : This is my fifth podcast, and to celebrate it, I have prepared something special, jazzy and at the same time, sodden with Caucasus folk culture. This podcast consists of two parts: First â is a fragment (pictures of Caucasus) of an jazz-ensemble called Mugam lead by Vagif Mustafa-Zade (1978). Vagif Mustafa-zade â was a prize winner of such festivals as Tallin-66 , Tallin-67 and Jazz-69 in Azerbaijan. In 1977 Vagif became a prize-winner of an United Jazz festival in Donezk. Jazz festival Tbilisi-78 has brought him a name as the best pianist in USSR. Having taken participation in the International jazz composition contest held in Monaco in 1979, Vagif won the First prize and received a beautiful white piano as a prize. Finding a more detailed biography of Vagif Mustafa-zade isn't that hard, most importantly is the effect his music brings on you. Second part of the podcast is a fragment of a big-band concert by Vladimir Chekasin, with an assistance of an composer named Konstantin Petrosyan. The voice of the project became Tatevick Oganesyan â the queen of soviet jazz vocal, the Russian Ella Fitzgerald. Even nowadays, she is still matchless in the jazz mainstream. Tatevick's manner of singing is heavily influenced by traditional Armenian music. She has sang in America, Europe, Australia. She received applauses at Lincoln center and Carnegie Hall. UNICEF: Building sustainability in Russia's North Caucasus
from recent posts - blip.tv (beta) June 05, 2008
VLADIKAVKAZ, North Ossetia, Russian Federation, 29 May 2008 -- UNICEF's Regional Director for Central and Eastern Europe and the Commonwealth of Independent States, Maria Calivis, recently visited UNICEF projects in Russia's North Caucasus region. During talks with the heads of three republics -- Taymuraz Mamsurov of North Ossetia, Ramzan Kadyrov of the Chechen Republic and Mukhu Aliev of Dagestan -- Ms. Calivis noted the marked change in UNICEF's programmes over the past nine years. Since 1999, the organization has helped implement $55 million worth of projects in the North Caucasus in partnership with local governments, as well as international and local non-governmental organizations. Now, UNICEF's focus has shifted from humanitarian assistance to support that is oriented more towards development and sustainability.
