El análisis intraoperatorio del primer ganglio ya se aplica con buenos resultados pronósticos en casos de melanoma y cáncer de mama. La técnica para detectar la existencia o no de afectación tumoral en el ganglio centinela resulta también eficaz en el diagnóstico y tratamiento del cáncer de vulva y de cérvix (cuello de útero), según los resultados obtenidos por el doctor Manuel García Manero, especialista del departamento de Ginecología de la Clínica Universitaria de Navarra. Su aplicabilidad en cáncer de endometrio se encuentra todavía en fase de estudio. Aunque la técnica diagnóstica del ganglio centinela no puede considerarse generalizada, la utilización de este procedimiento se viene aplicando desde hace algunos años en el tratamiento del melanoma, primero, y de cáncer de mama después. Pamplona, 23 julio (CERES TELEVISIÓN).- La Clínica Universitaria de Navarra ha realizado por primera vez en España una reconstrucción mamaria con tejido extraído del muslo de la propia paciente, a la que se le he practicado una mastectomía por un cáncer de mama, y cuya delgadez no permitía la reconstrucción con tejido abdominal. El especialista en Cirugía Plástica, Reparadora y Estética del centro médico, Emilio García, que ha dirigido al equipo que ha llevado a cabo la intervención, ha explicado en rueda de prensa esta nueva técnica que, según ha subrayado, cuenta con numerosas ventajas. Esta técnica está especialmente dirigida a mujeres a quienes se les ha realizado una extirpación total o parcial de la mama y que prefieren la reconstrucción con tejido propio, sin prótesis, pero que debido a su delgadez no se les puede extraer masa del abdomen, intervención más habitual al utilizar tejidos propios. Entre las ventajas de este tipo de reconstrucciones, según ha explicado García, está la generación de un comportamiento, un tacto y una apariencia natural, muy similar al de la mama sana , y, además, tolera la radioterapia en aquellas pacientes a las que fuera necesario tratar después de haber sido intervenidas, algo que no ocurre con la prótesis. San Martin resident Leona Reif, a breast cancer survivor who underwent a mastectomy, chemotherapy and radiation treatment to beat the disease that affects one out of nine women in the world was one of hundreds of volunteers who participated this weekend in the American Cancer Society Relay for Life, an all-night, 24-hour event held at Community Park. Reif was diagnosed with breast cancer five years ago and decided to have her breast removed. After the surgery, she asked her doctor if and when the cancer might return.
