Photo Diaries a Better aid to Weight Loss
from Weight Loss Blog (Lose That Tyre) - Podcasts powered by Odiogo September 19, 2008
Using conventional means say for instance roughly guessing what you eat per day or week, is it possible to accurately record what you are actually eating, some people have great success by using a conventional means of a food diary. In order to chart their progress as to regard what they are eating on a day or weekly basis, but is this necessarily the best way to record your progress. It would now seem that this is not the case, some research has been done in the United States that suggests otherwise what they say is if you take pictures of your food before you eat it. It is a far better way of tracking what you eat than other conventional methods, a woman was asked to keep photos of what she ate day during a day, it was quite a shock for the woman who participated in the one-day period. She actually thought that she was eating 2300 calories a day, but she found out that she was eating three times more than the recommended daily calorie intake for herself, she was found to be eating 6,083 calories instead. The photographs actually reminded her of the snacks that she binged on which otherwise might have not been counted by conventional means, or it might have been the case that she just wouldn t of taken note of it and thought she was eating far less than she originally was. Prof Lydia Zepedia and David Zeal who conducted the study said that people see diaries as a way of recording things, and added that when people write things in food diaries, they tend to do it hours after they have eaten the food, so it could be misleading for the person who might forget about the odd snack or two that they ate in between meals. People use food diaries as a recording tool but should be made aware that photo diaries are a much better intervention tools. To use to track your weight loss, when you can actually see what you ve eaten it puts it into perspective far more. How many of us actually start a food diary and then slack off or forget to fill it in. Here is what the Corinna ate in a day. 7 a.m. Three slices of toast with jam and butter 8 a.m. Coffee milk and sugar 8:30 a.m Coffee milk and sugar 9:00 a.m Coffee milk and sugar 10:30 a.m. Breakfast cob with egg, bacon, sausage and mushroom 12:30 p.m. McDonald s big Mac, fries and strawberry milkshake and apple pie. 1:30 p.m. Coffee milk with sugar 2:30 p.m. Coffee milk and sugar and a Mars bar 3:45 p.m. Coffee milk and sugar 6 p.m. Fish and chips with mushy peas and two slices of white bread with butter 7 p.m. One bag of boiled sweets, mint humbugs 8 p.m. One bottle of cider and two cans of lager 9 p.m. One large mug of drinking chocolate with four chocolate digestive biscuits What this does prove is that you can never be too careful about what you re eating because things can be so deceptive and sometimes you are just not aware of what you are actually eating. Even though you actually think you may be on top of what you are eating, it mounts up without even you realising it. So time to get the digital camera out and start recording what you re eating.

Can Too Much Thinking Make You Fatter
from Weight Loss Blog (Lose That Tyre) - Podcasts powered by Odiogo September 17, 2008
Just recently some research that has been put together in Canada has suggested that this might be the case, due to the fact that a lot of jobs in our society these days are not labour-intensive, like they were many years ago we have far more automation these days than we used to years ago. We no longer need secretaries to type documents for us because word processors make it so easy to format and produce professional looking documents, there are many other areas where this is true also, with a click of a button you can now send a message anywhere in the world or to the particular country you live in within seconds. The object of the study was to find out what impact it had upon your glucose, and your energy intake they used 14 female students, and they were assembled into three groups. Their body mass index was measured as being a very low 22.4, they performed the following tasks from each group for a period of 45 minutes, sitting in a resting position, reading a document or writing some sort of summary, and doing a computerised test which tested their memory, attention span etc. They had four blood ingredients measured plasma, glucose, insulin, and cortisol which is the stress hormone, they were then told to eat as much they possibly could when they had finished the various sessions which were 45 minutes each. The the females that performed the intensive computer tasks which would have used more brain concentration, ate approximately 253 calories more than the, group who were reading and doing summaries, and also ate, approximately 203 calories more than the group whom were resting. It was proven that the group whom were doing the more intensive brain activity used more glucose as the brain needs glucose the more work it does. So we really need to take away from this that at times we do need to go for a walk at dinner time if it is possible. Here is some food for though hands up how many people eat food at their computer, or have lunch ordered and eat it at their workstation whilst working perhaps this is another reason for our growing obesity epidemic, it s not until things like this are put before us that we realise that, it is actually affecting us I don t actually know what the statistics are. But more and more people are choosing to work from home and we also use computers at work far more now than ever before they are a commonplace item where ever you go most industries do use them, and I can honestly say that there doesn t seem to be more much of a slowdown as far as that is concerned. Our lives have changed over the last 20 years and technology is I would say to blame to some extent as regards our current obesity problem throughout the world. Can Exercise Alter Obesity Genes
from Weight Loss Blog (Lose That Tyre) - Podcasts powered by Odiogo September 15, 2008
Trying to lose weight is one of the hardest things to accomplish sometimes for some people, especially when you have genetics up against you as well, but now some evidence has come to light that was done by a University of research in Maryland USA. That suggests that exercise can now change this somewhat, they did a study of Amish people, both men and women a total of 704 participated in the study, it was found that some people had the particular gene which was associated with being overweight and or obese which is called FTO, Europeans about half of them tend to have a variation of this gene. The participants who had to different variants of this particular gene were far more likely to be overweight and tended to be seven pounds more heavier than those people who didn t have it those who had to variants of it were 67 percent more likely to become overweight or obese than those who didn t have it. But the researchers found that there was another group although they shared the same characteristics, as the ones to have the two variants of the gene, for some reason wasn t fat unlike their counterparts, so what was it that was different between the two different groups in a nutshell it was exercise that separated them. There is a twist to the story though, those who did manage to defeat their genes managed to burn a staggering 900 calories more than those who did moderate exercise for two to three hours a day. That s an awful lot when you think about it comparing the two. In another trial which was done by Danish people they found that those whom had the FTO to variants gene, had to do far less exercise than their counterparts in order to lose weight, so what can we actually take away from this research, it means that even if you do have problems and they are genetically related some simple exercise will put you on the right track all this tends to do is reinforce what is being said. So when the excuse comes it s to do with my DNA I am afraid it is no longer valid any more in order to lose weight effectively than you do need to do plenty of exercise otherwise you won t accomplish what you want to do ultimately. And this just reinforces it yet again. Although it just goes to show that even genes can be altered by simple changes to our lifestyles. Tags: obese

Eat Throughout The Day and Keep Weight Off
from Weight Loss Blog (Lose That Tyre) - Podcasts powered by Odiogo September 12, 2008
Having frequent meals throughout the day instead of the traditional three times a day model, which we are all so used to perhaps now might not necessarily be the best way to keep your weight in check. You are far better off by eating five to six small meals throughout the day, the reason for this is eating food is a chemical process most people when it comes to weight loss tend to get things backwards, they either over consume food or starve themselves the problem with doing these particular things is overconsumption creates more weight gain. And under consumption will cause your body to hold onto fat stores, but that only that your metabolism will slow right down, as regards to the amount of calories that you should be eating in a small meal 400 calories is perfectly adequate spread over about four to five meals that works out at roughly 2000 calories. You could always have one or more meals added to this say hundred calories each the thing here is to use common sense and workout what you could incorporate into these particular meals calorie wise to suit your own needs. If you are particularly looking to lose weight than adjust these so that you re consuming about 1600 calories instead another beneficial reason for doing this is it will keep your blood sugar at a stable level throughout the day, we do seem to have lots of traditional ways of doing things in our life. And it all does seem to revolve around the way we eat our meals as we are growing all as children we are constantly told by our parents not to eat between meals etc, so as we grow what we tend not to do it when we get older, but the thing is there is nothing wrong with it these days we are overloaded with information from print media, the Internet television etc all telling us what we should and shouldn t be doing. As regards eating food the thing is going back to years gone by things like breakfast, lunch and tea were never even heard of in Victorian times the only reason we have these particular ritual eating times is late tend to work within our working lives. But really why not break tradition and eat when you want to you will tend to reap the rewards far better, if you think about this logically it does make a lot of sense have you ever noticed when, you don t eat for several hours when it comes to say dinner time. You are starving due to the time that has elapsed between breakfast and dinner time, and do to your traditional way of eating you don t tend to snack until dinner time, but also you may notice that it is quite easily possible to eat more food eating this way. Have a go and try it and see what happens I think you might be quite pleasantly surprised. Remember these points eating food is a chemical process if you are eating food the right sort of food then your body is generating heat. If you want to get a rough idea of what to eat eating five to six meals a day have a look here. http://www.sixmealsadaydiet.co.uk

Can The Environment Make You Fat
from Weight Loss Blog (Lose That Tyre) - Podcasts powered by Odiogo September 10, 2008
Or are there any actual links to being obese or overweight that are connected with our environment? it would seem that a new study that was done in Spain has thrown up some very interesting issues as far as children and the actual environment they are brought up in. It argues that the actual pollutional environment that the child is actually brought up in as regards to chemicals, which it gets contaminated with whilst in the womb. Quite a lot of adults and children in the United Kingdom are now obese. And the world over there are 300 million obese people worldwide, and the explanation that we get over and over again is that it s merely down to the amount of calories that we are consuming, and also a lack of exercise. People the world over are now beginning to question whether, or not it is actually the case of the latter which is actually causing the problem as a whole, for a long time now it has been known that some people genetically do have slower metabolisms than others do. The new study which was done in Barcelona is now suggesting that, there may be other causes to the worldwide epidemic of obesity which shows no sign of decline, during the study some levels of a particular pesticide were measured namely hexachlorobenzene, 403 children were actually tested for the levels of this particular pesticide. The actual ones that had large levels of the particular toxin were far more likely to become obese later on in life, this particular pesticide has now been banned from use, but still can get into the environment and thus find it s way into food. The overall idea of the study was to not blame one particular pesticide, per se but just to prove that there was an actual course in effect namely that this particular pesticide did in fact cause problems. You have to face up to facts here having crops sprayed with pesticides, means that you are putting foreign substances into your body. None of us really actually know the amount of concentration that is used when spraying crops, the mere fact stands that we are putting something into our body that it doesn t need. Other experiments which have been conducted on animals, that have been fed with particular pollutants, have also been found to produce offspring that become obese later on, when they have started to grow. In the evidence that was found in the Spanish study, HCB as it is known as, they couldn t actually find a particular reason as to why the mother s offspring started to become obese, they put it down to the fact that the pesticide could have made the mother become diabetic. And this was the overall cause of the problem, a well-known expert in these areas, namely Dr Myers who is a well-known scientist at, the Environmental Health Service s in the USA, says that although these findings are very interesting and there does seem to be some sort of link. From what has been found by all of the studies he say s that there could be other explanations for these particular problems which have been occurring with mothers and their offspring, one of the toxins produces obesogens which tend to build up in pregnant mothers and can alter cell structure and turn things on and off, such as stem cells. If stem cells are turned off this in turn will turn stem cells into fat cells. So why are we actually still getting fatter The same things keep coming round and round again we tend to eat more calories than we need, hence we gain weight, eating up a poor diet high in sugar and saturated fat. However now scientists are beginning to overturn this particular notion and argue ar that there may be other factors that are causing our ever-increasing obesity epidemic, the Independent on Sunday last week stated that, as people there has been no actual downturn in the amount of physical activity that we did from now, and from the year 1980. But obesity has still tended to skyrocket out of control and shows no signs of stopping either, genetic factors also are being thrown out the window as well, and other things are now being looked into as to what is causing our ever overweight growing population. Could it be due to some of the other factors it s been stated that either on the way to overweight babies, can still become obese later on in life, and mothers who have their babies later on in life are more likely to have obese babies. Having a lack of sleep you are far more likely to gain weight this applies in adults and both children,we burn more calories. When we are colder we burn more calories, than if we are warmer, due to the fact of how efficient modern heating systems are whether, it be gas electric or modern central heating, we are far less likely to want to go outside and go for a walk or do some kind of exercise, when we can stay inside and keep warm. Lots of prescription drugs these days can cause weight gain. For all we know there could be many other contributing factors as to why we have they ever increasing population of overweight obese adults, I dare say that we now even just beginning to scratch the surface of what is causing this rise in obesity rates the world over. Because wa are spoonfed the same information over and over again we tend to think that that must be the overall cause and that is it, nothing else could be causing is to become overweight apart from what we are eating, some people no matter what they do, can t lose weight. They have to resort to having things like stomach tucks or having a gastric bypass operation, so what we have here is some alternative reasons as to why they may be other factors involving becoming obese rather than the normal ones we hear over and over again. It would be interesting to get some feedback about this particular issue in hand and see what other people think please let me know if you think that there are other factors, which are keeping people overweight. Or are we simply becoming genetic mutants by the foods that we are eating, and the enviroment with which we are bought up in. Source http://www.independent.co.uk Tags: obese
