From : YouTube :: Videos by iobuffa
In this video, TuxedoJericho asks how to best propel your status on social networks. While there is no silver bullet to make this happen, here are three techniques to increase your clout: 1. Participate 2. Passion 3. Courtesy. These three traits will most likely increase your recognition in your favorite social network, but are not guaranteed to work. I do these things but I also exhibit my personality which some people like and some people don't. This is a hard question to answer and ultimately, it depends on many factors. I will say, you employ the three things I mention in this video, it definitely can not hurt your situation. Hope this answered your question. From : YouTube :: Videos by iobuffa
In this video, I give an overview of what DNS Cache Poisoning. Bwana.TV member, TuxedoJericho requested this topic in the Bwana.TV group on geeks.pirillo.com. First off, the textbook definition: "DNS cache poisoning is a maliciously created or unintended situation that provides data to a Domain Name Server that did not originate from authoritative DNS sources." Confused? Probably. What this means is that DNS Cache Poisoning fools your computer to take you to malicious sites instead of where you intended to go. For example, if you want to go www.paypal.com and your DNS cache is poisoned, you could end up at a different site built to harvest your username and password and ultimately steal your information. To protect yourself from DNS cache poisoning, contact your ISP and ensure they are patched against all current exploit. If you or they are unsure, setup OpenDNS which is a free service that is currently secure and also gives you other benefits that I'm sure you could benefit from. I use OpenDNS here at Bwana.TV headquarters and I highly encourage you to visit their site and educate yourself on how to set it up. Enjoy! Wisestamp is a Firefox plugin that currently supports webmail clients such as Hotmail, AOL Webmail, Gmail, and Yahoo. With Wisestamp, you are empowered to embed images, bold text, italicize text, and apply web colors to your email signature. If you use instant messenger clients and/or social networks, Wisestamp will embed these IDs in your email signature with snazzy icons next to them. It really looks sharp. From : YouTube :: Videos by iobuffa
In this video, I talk about privacy, specifically privacy surrounding your email and files on your computer. This topic was suggested by jrblaze of the Bwana.TV community. Security is hot topic when it comes to data on your computer. An older solution from the 90s which I used to protect my data is called PGP. PGP was a commercial software package which had a very good reputation. The Gnu foundation took the notion of PGP and created a free version called GnuPG. All of the functionality found in PGP is available for you today, absolutely free. GnuPG may be a bit intimidating on the surface if you don't understand PKI or encryption techniques, but after a bit of education, you'll be a semi-expert. To utilize GnuPG for webmail, I highly recommend and demonstrate FireGPG which is a Firefox extension to sign and encrypt email messages from webmail clients. From : YouTube :: Videos by iobuffa
In this video, I give an overview of Alltop. This continues the previous conversation I had about reading news from the web without having the deal with RSS. Alltop gathers news from various sources from around the web without the knowledge of RSS. It is inspired by old news aggregators of the 90s that categorized web content for you rather than indexing the web. (Yahoo, Lycos, etc) Alltop took the look of Popurls which lists multiple sites on the same page in a tabular format. In this video, I demonstrate the new, revamped interface of Alltop and also some of the ways to utilize it to get your news fix. Enjoy. From : Bwana.TV
Enjoy.

From : YouTube :: Videos by iobuffa
Really Simple Syndication (RSS), is a hot topic on the web today. Many of us like to read many different websites and gather news from different sources. RSS aims to make that process easier by syndicating your website so that news can be aggregated in an RSS reader. RSS readers are not popular among everyone, but email is a preferable means. Some people like to read newsletters and digests as email rather than fumble with an RSS reader. A website by the name of feedmyinbox (http://www.feedmyinbox.com) offers a dead simple method of using email for RSS syndication. To use feedmyinbox, simply input your email address and the web site you wish to aggregate. That's it! It doesn't get much simpler than that. So try feedmyinbox if you prefer to receive news via email. From : Bwana.TV
In this video, I discuss the change Twitter has gone through over the past 4 months. I give a background on my decision to leave Twitter indefinitely due to their seemingly lack of interest in the instant messaging and track features of the service. Over the past few weeks, Twitter has received a great deal of praise on keeping their system more stable than in times past. I went on record to say this was due to their decision to completely disable instant messaging and track. Last week, I came to the realization that the track capability of Twitter is not coming back. I've realized that the track capability cannot be globally rolled out with the current implementations of microblogging software. So in this video, I explain this, and also my decision to return to Twitter to try to find a new way to utilize it without track. Enjoy.

From : YouTube :: Videos by iobuffa
In this video, I give my thoughts on Apple's latest software revision of the iPhone dubbed version 2.1. At the Sept 9th event, Steve Jobs touted this update as being "huge" and promised it would address all of our concerns including: application crashing/hanging, dropped calls, poor battery life, system slowness, long backup times, and the like. Over the past 3 days, I've been using my iPhone with the 2.1 software for quite a bit, and I must say, I believe Steve kept his word. Some of the areas I noticed the most were backup times, 3rd party application stability, 3rd party application installation speed, overall stability, and overall speed. This update also brought the "Genius" feature to the iPhone which allows one to generate "super smart" playlists based a certain song. Genius has been hit or miss for me, but generally, it does a decent job. My personal playlists will always be better in my opinion. So overall, if you are a user of the 2.0 software on the iPhone, I highly recommend you upgrade immediately. This update fixes a lot of issues that I think you could benefit from. Enjoy! From : Bwana.TV
In this video, I discuss a must have piece of software for Mac OS X, called Fluid. (or Fluid.app) I've been using Fluid for quite some time now but oddly enough, I've not talked about it before. Fluid provides Site Specific Browsers (SSB) for your favorite web applications. If you are a big user of Google Mail, Twitter, Facebook, FriendFeed, or Pandora then you could definitely benefit from Fluid.app. Fluid also supports MenuExtra SSBs which means you can run tiny web sites from your system-wide menu bar in Mac OS X. This is perfect for mobile versions of websites if you wish to have a quick peek at self updating information. (Twitter, Digg, Identi.ca, etc). You can download Fluid.app absolutely free at http://www.fluidapp.com/. Enjoy!

One the biggest benefits of using the VLC media player is that you don't have to worry about video formats and codecs. In my experience, VLC media player has done an excellent job with format and codec support right out of the box. In this video, I demonstrate some of the new features of version 0.9.2 which includes an overhauled interface, new video filters, new audio filters, and playback support of Youtube videos. If you have not tried VLC media player, I highly recommend you visit http://www.videolan.org and downoad it today. It's absolutely free for Windows, Mac OS X (UNIX), and Linux.

From : YouTube :: Videos by iobuffa
In this video, I talk about a great new iPhone application for the Rejaw social network. I've talked about Rejaw before on Bwana.TV and one of the cool features about it is that it provides real time conversations around updates. The iPhone client does not disappoint in this area as new conversations are automatically updated on the client while it is running. It is easy to reply to shouts and the view your friends shouts while on the go. The only issue I have with this client is that it is limited in finding new friends on Rejaw. For example, you can't browse the public shout list to find new people to follow. If you are a new Rejaw user looking for people to follow, I recommend you use the website first, then utilize the iPhone client. I'm liking what I see and I hope you give it a try! From : Bwana.TV
In this video, I talk about an exciting service that gives you great statistics for your website. The downloadable application for Windows, Mac, and Linux gives you a Star Trek like dashboard for your website visitors. Woopra is free, but it takes some time to get your website approved for the system. Once approved, you get a live view of what's happening on your website as well as statistics and analytical information regarding visitor behavior. If you host a website on the internet, then Woopra is almost a must have, especially since it's free! Enjoy!

From : YouTube :: Videos by iobuffa
In this video, I discuss a new social network called Raptr. Raptr is centered around gaming across multiple platforms including PC, Mac, Flash, 360, PS3, and Wii. Much like Xfire and other such clients, it tracks what you are playing at the moment. The cool thing about Raptr is that it ties into Twitter, FriendFeed and Facebook. So when you start playing your favorite game, you can let your friends on social networks know what you are doing. Raptr has its own community where you can branch out, learn about new games, make friends, and do all those things that social networks highlight. I've been using Raptr for less than a day now, but I'm glad I got involved since I had been looking for something like this to tie into FriendFeed. There's RSS feeds for your activity, so it'll be a piece of cake to embed something like this on your blog. If you join Raptr, add me. My id is bwana. Enjoy! From : YouTube :: Videos by iobuffa
In this video, I give my first impressions of the fresh, new web browser, Google Chrome. Chrome was developed by Google in order to improve performance of web applications. They have rewritten underlining code for javascript to improve speeds. Apple and Mozilla are also developing similar technologies as well. My first impressions are fairly positive. Some nifty features that I really liked were the Task Manager which allows you to view each tab as a process, and then view its cpu, memory, and network consumption. If you navigate to about:memory in Google Chrome, it gives you a great overview of system resources for Google Chrome AND other open browsers such as Firefox. I have run into some problems which I kind of expected from a "beta" product. For example, if you navigate to a youtube.com video and make it full screen, it will crash the flash plugin. Since Google has been sensitive to browser crashes, these type of crashes won't bring down the entire browser. Simple refreshes will bring back flash on open tabs. Neat. There are a wealth of other features that are available but these are the ones that stood out to me after half a day of light usage. Enjoy!
