August 09, 2008

Activist James Mawdsley who spent years in a Burmese prison speaks out about The Gadfly Project. He is the Author of: "The heart must break: the fight for democracy and truth in Burma" A compelling story of his life as a 27 year old man from Lancashire, who returned home to Britain at the end of 2000 having endured 14 months of solitary confinement and torture in a Burmese prison. This is an account of his four years in and out of Burma where he witnessed the regime s genocidal persecution of Burma s border people and the inhumanity of the prisons. He had suspended the promise of academic success and a comfortable family life in England, to pursue instead something more purposeful -- and with quite extraordinary consequences.

We Are the Targets of the Burma ArmyWe Are the Targets of the Burma Army
from recent posts - blip.tv (beta)
July 22, 2008

When The Burma army comes to visit the ethnic minority citizens in eastern Burma, it is usually to take men for forced labor, to commandeer food and livestock, to extort the villagers for the privilege of living within their area of operations, or to take women to work in the military barracks. Most forced laborers will not be paid nor even fed for their grueling work , and many of these women, and the other forced laborers will never return to their villages. Just as often the Burma army may announce their presence by simply mortaring and machine-gunning the village. If this is the case any villagers still alive in the village may be taken away along with the livestock, beaten, tortured, or summarily executed on the spot. The Burma army soldiers will then loot the villagers' homes, and burn them along with the rice barns. The days of genocide are for the most part passed now, and the Burma army soldiers will seldom even chase the vilagers into the jungle, they know where they are, and that they will return to search for food, and other items to help them survive. Landmines will be placed throughout the village and around any remaining crops in the field. These landmines kill or maim many men, women, and children each year. Rather than using genocide, the Burma army commanders prefer to let the jungle claim as many lives as are needed to make the villagers more compliant in the future, at which point the commanders will make a good living by extortion, forced labor, and forced quotas of food and building materials which the commanders will sell at 100% profit while the villagers do without. Whatever work needs to be done from road repair, to maintenance around the army bases, to hauling ammunition and supplies up and down the jungled mountains to army outposts which will be the staging points for further attacks on their own people. Or, in some cases the village rice paddies are confiscated and converted into castor oil, palm oil, or rubber plantations, which are then leased to private companies to run, and supplied with villagers to work for nothing, in the fields which used to supply their food. The villagers' only option if they have any warning is to grab their children, and a few survival necessities and head off into the jungle. From there they will take their chances with nature, which over the long run may be commiting suicide to save their lives. If it is the rainy season they will be suffering an even worse fate, but with the Burma army around, there are few options.

July 14, 2008

(1) Campaign in Burma "In Burma we see Admiral Lord Mountbatten, the late Major General Wingate and the ace air-director, Colonel 'Flip Corkan' watching Colonial troops depart for heavy action. We move out into the muddy combat areas and watch air transport drop bales of rice and munitions. Allied tanks and infantry are slogging through. Further afield we encounter General Stilwell's Chinese armies (armed with Yank equipment), then we watch them advance through the jungle country. The refugees pour in, and they hungrily seize the rice issued them. All of which gives one a better insight into these vital Burma campaigns which are aimed at driving a wedge into the present Japanese Empire. 'Vinegar Joe's Birthday North Burma: General Stilwell, 61, receives a birthday cake with the inscription 'Happy Uncle Joe.' He slices it and hands a chunk to a Colonel, his son. Then the entire staff pitches in." (2) Plane Parts Salvaged "Alameda Naval Air Station, CA: Damaged combat planes provide tons of valuable parts, in huge salvage program. And Butch O'Hara's famous bullet riddled plane provides inspiration as well as salvage parts." (3) The Italian War Front " At Anzio, the British press their speedy rocket guns into action providing eerie, flashless night pictures. Shamrock Decorations Cassino Front: General Alexander engages in the ceremony of the shamrocks, on March 17th, with an Irish Regiment." (4) Victories At Sea "Shipan Island, Marianas: A Yank task force meets Jap air opposition. Long rows of anti-aircraft guns blaze away, 5-inch guns on the carriers roar. The sky is filled with tracers and flak bursts, and we see Jap planes diving head on, deep into the Pacific Ocean. Explosions mark their watery graves. Nazi Sub Battle A Nazi sub surfaces in the Atlantic, and begins a battle royal with a U.S. Navy seaplane tender. The sub loses." http://www.burmaitcantwait.org Ellen Page, Will Ferrell, Sarah Silverman, James Cameron, Jason Schwartzman, Sheryl Crow, Jackson Browne and more.. Aung San Suu Kyi (pronounced Ong Sawn Sue Chee) is the world s only imprisoned Nobel Peace Prize recipient. Suu Kyi is not just a prisoner, she is the rightful leader of Burma (also known as Myanmar). She led a political party, the National League for Democracy, to win 82% of the seats in parliament in Burma s last democratic election. Because of her peaceful fight for human rights and democracy, Aung San Suu Kyi has been forced from her children and family. (On May 27th, despite the outpouring of humanitarian aid offered in response to the cyclone, the military junta chose to extend her house arrest by another year, rather than to release her, as had been scheduled.) Aung San Suu Kyi has appealed to people around the world to help the struggle for human rights and democracy in Burma, saying Please, use your liberty to promote ours. The Human Rights Action Center and the U.S. Campaign for Burma have joined together to create Burma: It Can t Wait, a first-of-its-kind, 30-day campaign using influential celebrity voices to help build a million-person movement to free Nobel Peace Prize recipient Aung San Suu Kyi and the people of Burma.
