Femtocells - Not a Minute Too Soon by Andrew McCaskey It would almost be enough to convert me to a Sprint phone subscriber, if it were not for the iPhone and family connections that have us firmly tied to AT T. Even though we are less than a mile from cellular towers serving traffic on a major interstate highway, the cell phone service inside the house is a joke. Of course, when you choose to live inside a Faraday Cage of aluminum siding, you can live with the consequences of your decision. And, with luck, the XM satellite can see just the right portion of the sky from a bookcase through a bedroom window on the second floor. But with bad luck, your AT T cellphone will be just about flat unless you are at an open window facing the tower. The Sprint Femtocell $99 box +$15 per month uplift would be just the solution - positioned in an upstairs window or attic with clear view of the cell tower, repeating inside the aluminum silo that is our home. There have got to be millions of homes with this problem (most built in the 1960 s and 1970 s) and it may be one of the Golden Arrows (along with WiMax) that can pull Sprint s fortunes out of the fire. I hope so, (since I am an EVDO customer with Sprint). More Thoughts on Seesmic by Andrew McCaskey The best of intentions were to record Seesmic versions of the production process this evening, but he combination of lighting, ground loops and fan noise were not lining up in a favorable direction. There seems to be a lot of activity on Seesmic, but not much focused activity on the public timeline. This is probably due to several factors - not the least of which is the generation gap as far as what is interesting content, and the timing (time of day) that the episodes are posted. There seem to be a number of working professionals and freelancers on during the day - with more random conversations and shoutouts in the evening hours. I expect that it will also change as the seasons change- The objective, as I mentioned on the air, is to see if there is some improvement that can be made to the SDRNews audience who listen at their desk or laptop machine at some point during the day, as opposed to the commuter. My first impressions of a mobile game 100 years in the making. Okay so maybe The Shroud isn t 100 years in the making but man it has taken a long time for the game to come out. Just look at this super old post on QuicklyBored from back in January of 2006 where we mention The Shroud. We finally got our hands on the game so I ll show you some pictures of the game and talk about my first impressions. The Shroud is an incredible feat when it comes to mobile gaming. Personally, I m not a big RPG gamer because I have an addictive personality and when Final Fantasy 7 came out I didn t leave my parent s basement for about a week. On the other hand, I would totally play The Shroud. And get fired. The story: The Shroud is a world where humans banished an evil race thousands thousands of years ago. It is here that most evil of these creatures lay in wait, anticipating their time of return. That time is not far off, as humans have foolishly uncovered the gateway to The Shroud in the depths of an old mine. With an open doorway to the human world, these fiends are poised to take root and destroy the humans who once banished them. The only way to stop these monsters from emerging is to close their breaches, which are forced openings in time between our World and The Shroud. To ensure the safety of our loved ones, players take control of Taro as he completes various challenges that will be a true physical and mental test of his mettle. The list of features in this game are incredible. The Shroud takes a Sims like approach to farming, where you have to keep a nice harvest going and goes a hundred steps further by using new technologies such as GPS. Some of the GPS features of the game bring a truly unique angle to the gameplay. Imagine not being able to finish a quest until you ve walked 5km North of your position. You d be getting exercise and playing a sweet game. I m also looking forward to seeing how the community involvement works out with the game. This game will require a great deal of attention and I m sure people are going to be working hard to getting huge farms and tons of cash. With international leader boards and forum participation, this game is sure to bring a big fan base. Still not hyped about the game? Interview Excerpts: You were one of the first people we talked to about The Shroud. - Robert Sprogis Around that same time they teamed up with Sony BMG and a number events transpired that led to them adding new features to the game such a downloadable content which made the game better but also resulted in a longer development time. They teamed up with Gamevil USA to finish the project. In the end, they created a game that they felt made for a good balance between getting lots of features but also getting the game to market. During the interview, Robert Sprogis gives an in-depth look at exactly what you ll do in The Shroud and sets the story that is the foundation of this wild RPG. I tried to get some info about what s going on with Helio and Virgin but Robert wasn t having it. Well it s in the certification process with Helio. The situation with Helio is I can t really talk about it because I m under NDA but the game is still going to be coming out on Helio. Damn NDAs! But still sweet. Years Away from Market Dominance by Andrew McCaskey I guess it is sour grapes, (watching my Upsampling DVD player, formerly known as an HD-DVD player gather dust) but I have to take some small pleasure in the the lack of traction and lackluster sales of Blu-Ray to date. As Mary Chapin Carpenter says, The Numbers Never Lie , and here are some of them: Including Playstation 3, there are about 3 million Blu-Ray capable players in the US. Stand alone player prices hover around $300. For $50, a consumer can get a DVD player, as have roughly 100 million consumers. Even with a price drop by half for the Christmas season, it s going to be hard to see how many consumers are going to make Blu-Ray a must have item this season. And, as alternatives such as VuDu and the Netflix box come on line, family entertainment expenditures are not going to be the highest priority, once you get past the early adopters. I suspect that we already have. I think not. I am not sure what is happening at your house, but I am noticing more and more use of online video, in ways probably not intended by their creators. At first- say the past year or so, it was the stupid pet trick videos on YouTube that got sent around, much like joke emails or in earlier years the Xerox art cartoons of office humor. With no teenagers or college age kids in the house, I feel sure that we were spared a lot of video best not sent. The past three months, though, we have been watching more and more online video and there s been a none too subtle change. We LIKE it that way. Thirty years ago - or maybe less- if there was some question on the weather, we would grab the news paper and see what was in the forecast. Or, we might catch the local radio station at home or on the way to work. Within the past few years, the local TV news got switched on while preparing for dinner, and you might catch the weather. Within the past three months - since the writer s strike - Tivo d versions of what little is on TV have forced a transition to some active viewing management. Online video provides the tools, Now, if we want the weather, we go to the TV station s website and watch the two minute clip, sidestepping the used car dealer ads, murder, mayhem and sports trivia. We scan the headlines on the web page, punch up the video coverage for another two minutes and we are out of there to Tivo or (in my case) podcasting. I imagine that the TV station did not exactly want to have us use their streaming video to bypass their station .On the other hand, I expect that they are building their brand and preserving eyeballs when there are more viewers who are making the same move and change in their media habits. Thumbnail Views: Via Thumblicio.us SEARCH ANY STORY YOU HEAR ON THE PODCAST iPhone Additions - First Reaction by Andrew McCaskey With a grand total of maybe twenty minutes experimenting with the new firmware that arrived overnight for the iPhone, I have to say that I like what I see. Two things stand out - the use of the location service with maps as a backup for a dedicated GPS unit while on foot, and the flexibility of the new menu system on the iPhone that lets you pull out a section of a web page, make an icon of it, and move it to the front page of the iPhone. This makes it easy to set up my Nozbe account in its own icon, and then move it directly to the front of the phone - for quick reference and no drill down through log in screens. It looks like it will provide a number of such screens that I can flip through, customizing to my heart s content among various sites that I either administer or frequent. The enhanced map location will be a lot more discrete to consult than the separate GPS unit - alhtough the dedicated unit is obviously much more desirable for full time installation in the car. I ll give a more detailed report the next trip into Chicago or Indianapolis.
