The 30% Solution (The Brian Lehrer Show: Friday, 25 July 2008)
from WNYC's Brian Lehrer Show July 25, 2008
While New York can't be redesigned from scratch to be entirely powered by renewable energy, like Masdar, we can take our cues instead from Juneau. When an avalanche forced Alaska's capital to switch from hydro to diesel power, its citizens cut their energy demand by 30% -- and it's still down by 15-20%, months after hydro was restored. We talk to deputy mayor Randy Wanamaker about the city's new culture of conservation.

MdG - Kapitel 39b - Der Bund der Vorfahren
from Harry Potter Podcast July 25, 2008
EP168: Family Values
from Escape Pod July 25, 2008
By Sara Genge. Read by Alasdair Stuart (of Pseudopod). First appeared in Cosmos, August/September 2007. Audible.com Promotion! Get your free audiobook at: http://audible.com/escapepodsff Senator Wu accepted Twing s seed out of courtesy, although she had no intention of conceiving his child. Twing of Sails had thrown this party in his house in her honour, but he wasn t as free with kilojoules as he was with genetic material, and Senator Wu wasn t prepared to funnel the heat donations of her two crèche mates to bring another man s child to the World. She acidified the pores in her tentacle and waved it around, letting the current carry away the dead spores. She smiled at Twing and a wave of blue burst from his centre and radiated towards the thin membranes that rippled on the edge of his disc-shaped body. He didn t look bad, but he wasn t as comely as Senator Wu. Her body was an almost perfect sphere, and she was well aware of it. Wherever she went, she took care to rotate every few minutes, lest gravity pull on her too long in any one direction and tug her gelatinous figure out of shape. Rated PG. Contains alien reproduction, politics, and other sordid topics. Referenced Sites: The Daily Cabal

mother - podictionary 819
from podictionary - for word lovers - daily stories, trivia & dictionary etymology July 25, 2008
Today s podictionary word brought to you by GoToMeeting. Try it free for 30 days by following the link www.gotomeeting.com/podcast I sometimes say that a common human experience breeds a word that is common across cultures and changes little over time. There isn t much in the world that s more common to human experience than having a mother, nor anything that means quite as much to most people. So it should come as no surprise that this word has come down to us almost unchanged for as far back as we can see into the history of words. And also that it is one of the words that spans the entire width and breadth of Indo-European languages. Evidently we only started writing the TH in mother back in the early 1500s but may have been pronouncing it that way for some time beforehand. The Indo-European root was mater. Not too different for five to seven thousand years. Also, languages from Latin to Gaelic, and Greek to Russian share this maternal legacy. This is a word we not only all have in common, it is also a word we all use with great regularity. Words like that just can t change because there are too many people around who know the word and will correct you if you start to pronounce it wrong or use it with a meaning that is just too far from their understanding of what it should mean. So again it is no surprise that we didn t get mother from Latin or French, but from the oldest Old English. I mentioned Sir Robert Cotton yesterday in my episode on the word mildew at the Oxford University Press blog. While the meaning of mildew has changed a lot, the word mother has its first citation in the same document set I mentioned yesterday from Sir Robert s library. The Cotton Library is an important resource for people studying Old English. Unfortunately back in 1731almost a quarter of the ancient collection went up in smoke. The documents had been brought together around the time of Shakespeare by Sir Robert Cotton and then had been moved in the early 1700s to the ironically named Ashburnham House. The librarian was understandably an enthusiast when it came to ancient documents and he had quite a pile of them in his own house nearby when tragedy struck. In the dead of night his house burned down and destroyed numerous irreplaceable old manuscripts. An eyewitness—the headmaster of the school where this all took place—reported the panic stricken librarian stumbling out through the smoke in his nightshirt with bundles of old documents tucked under his arms.

Pseudopod 100: The Music of Erich Zann
from Pseudopod July 25, 2008
By Howard Phillips Lovecraft Read by BJ Harrison I have examined maps of the city with the greatest care, yet have never again found the Rue d’Auseil. These maps have not been modern maps alone, for I know that names change. I have, on the contrary, delved deeply into all the antiquities of the place, and have personally explored every region, of whatever name, which could possibly answer to the street I knew as the Rue d’Auseil. But despite all I have done, it remains an humiliating fact that I cannot find the house, the street, or even the locality, where, during the last months of my impoverished life as a student of metaphysics at the university, I heard the music of Erich Zann. This week s episode sponsored by Audible.com, who has extended their generous offer of a free audiobook download of your choice from their selection of over 40,000 titles.

Episode #85: Free Will and Choice in Harry Potter
from Harry Potter Prognostications Podcast July 24, 2008
One of the over-arching meta-themes of the Harry Potter books is, without a doubt, choice. From early on the books the theme of choice is empasised, when the Sorting Hat defers to Harry s wish to be in Gryffindor, or when Dumbledore makes it clear to Harry that it is his choices, far more than abilities that make him the wizard that he is. It s clear that J.K. Rowling is a proponent of the idea that we make ourselves who we are and are ultimately responsible for who we become. Putting aside a scientific discussion of free will and determinism, a greater question, from within the stories themselves, comes to light. With the conclusion of Book 7, and the revelation of Dumbledore s less than altruistic motives, does J.K. Rowling s position on free will and choice change? Did Harry, in fact, make all those choices of his own free will, or, perhaps, was he influenced by forces beyond his control? Despite Dumbledore s protestations to the contrary, could Harry ever have avoided the final showdown with the Dark Lord, had he simply chosen to walk away? In this week s episode, we examine the nature of free will and choice as presented in the books after Book 7, and what J.K. Rowling might be saying about what it means to be free. This podcast is brought to you by Audible.com. Download a free audiobook of your choice today at audiblepodcast.com/hp. Check out some of the books we talked about on this week s episode. Make sure to check out Penny s post Deathly Hallows: One Year Later for a rundown on all that s happened since Book 7 was released.
