German artist Gregor Hildebrandt s solo show at the booth of Galerie Jan Wentrup, Berlin, at the Art Statements sector of Art 39 Basel 2008 is centred around the film Les Choses de la vie by Claude Sautet with Romy Schneider and Michel Piccoli in the leading roles. At the gallery s booth we met with Tina Wentrup, who provided us with a short introduction to the show. Part of the installation are a granit plate with the Portrait of Romy Schneider etched on it, and - typical for Gregor Hildebrandt - works with pre-recorded cassette tapes, such as a vibrant curtain made from a recording of the mentioned feature film. For Gregor Hildebrandt (born 1974 in Bad Homburg, Germany, lives and works in Berlin), the cassette tape as artistic medium fulfills an important purpose: it enables the artist to add a further, invisible dimension to his pictures. At Art 39 Basel the gallery Klosterfelde presented a video by German artist Christian Jankowski entitled Kunstmarkt TV (Art Market TV), that shows two shopping channel hosts selling artworks via VernissageTV s live streaming platform in the Open Space section of the international art fair Art Cologne 2008. In this video, we take a look at the video and Matthias Freiherr v. Stenglin (Klosterfelde) provides us with a short introduction to the work. In honor of Ellsworth Kelly s 85th birthday, Matthew Marks Gallery presents a one-person exhibition by the artist at Art 39 Basel. On display at the gallery s booth at Art Basel are 20 works by Ellsworth Kelly made over the course of his nearly 60 year career. VernissageTV correspondent Sabine Trieloff met Ellsworth Kelly on the occasion of his exhibition. In this conversation, Ellsworth Kelly talks about his work and present and future projects. Ellsworth Kelly is also featured in the Fernand Léger exhibition at the Fondation Beyeler in Basel (on view through September 7, 2008).
