Brain Breathe was the result of over a year and a half of work and research into using a blend of computer generated audio and video to create a psuedo-organic aesthetic. As a development from the hundreds of artworks created by Butler concerning virtual reality and the use of information as a medium, the artist has created this linear video piece which subtly blends computer generated imagery with photographic images and video.The artist has left the deciphering of the natural and computer generated imagery up to the viewer. However, this is no easy task considering the amount of digital augmentation which has taken place on this video (some sequences contain over sixty layers of composited video). With a running time of a little over 5 minutes, Brain Breathe attempts to blend computer generated abstract, organic caustic patterns with digital barcodes and back again before a voyage through organic animated cell patterns and abstract combinations of photographic and digital imagery. The video, which is brought to climax of digital and chaotic noise, is an example of Butler s playful blend of the real and the virtual (in both aesthetic and conceptual content). All audio-visual content was created and produced by Alan Butler, 2004.
