The all-girl trio Arabesque was created by two Frankfurt-based German producers at the height of the disco era in 1977. After one album and a few singles that had found surprising success in Japan, the producers changed the lineup, keeping Michaela Rose and replacing the two other girls with Jasmin Vetter and Sandra Lauer. Vetter, a former gymnast, also became the trio's choreographer and Lauer, soon to be billed simply as Sandra, assumed the position of a lead vocalist. The first single of the updated Arabesque, Hello, Mr. Monkey went to number one in Japan. The Far East remained the band's biggest market, with numerous albums and compilations released over the years. However, Arabesque's success in their homeland was very modest, with only one single, Marigot Bay, entering the German charts at number eight in 1981. In 1984, they disbanded and Sandra embarked on a successful solo career with the songs written by her future husband Michael Cretu (of Enigma fame.) Jasmin Vetter and Michaela Rose formed a new duet, Rouge, but after a few obscure singles it ceased to exist. In the first overtime, the Waves were celebrating a six-point lead with less than a minute to play and possession of the ball. In the second overtime, they jumped out to an early three-point lead, only to see the Wolfpack pull away with superior shooting from the line. By the time the buzzer sounded, the Wolfpack had completed its fourth consecutive last-second or overtime victory, and the Waves sat shell-shocked at their misfortunes. "I think you need to win a game like this if you expect to go far in the tournament," Valvano said. "You need a little luck if you want to go a long way." The last thing the coach and his charges were thinking in the waning moments of regulation, the first overtime and the second overtime were advancing to Sunday's second-round game against Nevada-Las Vegas. They were simply trying to survive, much of that time with senior point guard Sidney Lowe on the bench after he committed his fifth foul. Lowe went from coach-on-the-floor to another guy hoping on the bench after a desperation reach-in foul with less than a minute remaining in the first overtime, his brilliant career seemingly over. That left the Wolfpack's fate in the hands of its other senior guard, Dereck Whittenburg, who for the second consecutive Saturday (given the late-night finish of the contest) excelled in overtime. This is from my archive of old cassette tapes I've had since high school (early 1980s). This is from a tape I found where I had recorded some portions of the "Freeform" program that ran on KWK FM 106.5/AM 13.8 and hosted by John Hutchinson. This program had a HUGE influence on my musical tastes at the time, and if it wasn't for it, I might still be listening to "classic rock."
