Coming in October 2008, a tremendously exciting project for Northern Soul fans everywhere. We've done a deal with Wienerworld, a major music DVD company, and the same company who originally released our classic documentary "The Strange World Of Northern Soul", and we are now doing the definitive DVD box set. A five disc set of 200 performances called "Northern Soul's Greatest 200 Floorfillers". This uses some songs from "The Strange World Of Northern Soul" which are completely re-edited, so they look fresh and sparkling new. All the previous video effects done in the 1990s are gone forever, consigned to history. Plus loads and loads of never before seen videos, many of which have sat in the can untouched for many many years. Plus some newly recorded tributes to the classics. If you ever went to Blackpool Mecca or Wigan Casino, this is the must-have purchase of the year. This is Carol Jackson, original lead singer of the legendary Philadelphia group The Sapphires, singing "Gotta Have Your Love", which was so popular on the ABC label as far back as the days of the Twisted Wheel Club in Manchester, the first home of Northern Soul. My late great best friend Les Cokell, the DJ there, played it on its original UK release label, HMV Records, and he just always adored it. This is yet another legendary Northern Soul smash, that we filmed for "The Strange World Of Northern Soul". This is a piece of classic mid-Sixties Philly, which absolutely epitomised the embryonic days of the Northern Scene. The Sapphires comprised of Carol Jackson (lead vocalist) who is now married and known as Carol Canty, plus George Gainer and Joe Livingston. The Sapphires were a vocal trio from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, U.S.A. Signed to the Swan record label by producer Jerry Ross, the trio's first single releases were on that imprint. Their first single release was entitled 'Where Is Johnny Now?'. The backing group consisted of several contributors to the Philadelphia International empire at a later date. These included Leon Huff, Thom Bell (keyboards), Bobby Eli (guitar), Joe Macho (bass), and Bobby Martin on vibes. Their follow up song was entitled 'Who Do You Love?', a song that made the pop charts, peaking at number 25 in 1964. Further singles, 'I Found Out Too Late' and 'Gotta Be More Than Friends' were less successful. During their early career, the group were associated with Kenny Gamble, who arranged their vocals on the groups debut album release, 'Who Do You Love'. Moving to ABC later in the Sixties, they failed to return to the charts. Their songs proved to be highly popular, at a later date, on the Northern Soul scene, including 'Gotta Have Your Love' (number 33 on the R & B charts in 1965 and featuring background vocals by Valerie Simpson, Nick Ashford, and Melba Moore), 'Evil One', 'Gonna Be a Big Thing', and 'Slow Fizz' (1966). We filmed all four of these songs with Carol and to this day have never yet edited two of them at all. The latter song ended their contract with ABC and the group went their seperate ways. Carol said it was impossible to get them back together, so she sang the songs and we added some dear friends of mine for the backing vocals. Anyone who is a fan of my work should be easily able to spot who make up these new Sapphires especially to back Carol, who is, after all, the one and only original lead singer. This was filmed in 1998, while we were filming our marathon six disc, twenty four hour massive documentary about the entire history of the Northern Soul scene, which contained 131 specially recorded performances of all the classics, and is still available on a six disc box set from Wienerworld. So, Carol was more than happy to make this one and only one-time performance especially for us, for our ground breaking Encyclopedia Britannica of Northern Soul, and I am so glad that we did. Sigler has worked with most of the artists associated with the Philadelphia stable including The O'Jays, The Roots, Jackie Moore, Harold Melvin & the Blue Notes, Barbara Mason, Billy Paul, Lou Rawls and Stephanie Mills. Originally a performer, Sigler first recorded for the V-Tone Records label in 1959. He has also recorded for the Decca, Parkway, Gamble, Philadelphia International and Gold Mind labels. Gold Mind, headed by Philly guitarist/writer/producer/arranger Norman Harris was a subsidiary of Salsoul Records. Bunny Sigler sang the "23rd Psalm" at the ceremony awarding the Congressional Gold Medal to the Tuskegee Airmen on March 29, 2007, at the United States Capitol. The legendary Godfather of Philadelphia, Weldon Arthur McDougall III, took my cameraman, Adi Denney, round to Bunny's house in early 1999 and he opened the door in his pyjamas. He performed his biggest Northern Soul classic just for us playing it on his guitar nd after thirty five years, still remembering every chord and every word. The man is a legend. The site will remain live and searchable as an archive of all the great home movies and creative projects that have been offered here. With this last film, we present another gem from the great collector of film ephemera, Nolan Pelletier. He includes with this film some amazing slides collected from the same estate sale that offered up this eclectic home movie: This film came from the Estate of this man. He was definitely a hunter. Half the slides I found were of his latest blood covered hunting kills or his hunting buddies. Mixed in with the rest of the slides was this picture. One of these things is not like the other. I highly recommend browsing Nolan s Flickr stream, the owls go, which includes wonderful still images as well as selections of the hours of home movies we transferred from his collection, which make fantastic use of Flickr s video feature. Coming in October 2008, a tremendously exciting project for Northern Soul fans everywhere. We've done a deal with Wienerworld, a major music DVD company, and the same company who originally released our classic documentary "The Strange World Of Northern Soul", and we are now doing the definitive DVD box set. A five disc set of 200 performances called "Northern Soul's Greatest 200 Floorfillers". This uses some songs from "The Strange World Of Northern Soul" which are completely re-edited, so they look fresh and sparkling new. All the previous video effects done in the 1990s are gone forever, consigned to history. Plus loads and loads of never before seen videos, many of which have sat in the can untouched for many many years. Plus some newly recorded tributes to the classics. If you ever went to Blackpool Mecca or Wigan Casino, this is the must-have purchase of the year. This is the legendary Detroit group called The Dynamics, led by Ernest Fudge, who recorded so many many Northern Soul hits. Unfortunately there seem to have been nine different groups called The Dynamics, which makes it virtually impossible to put together a proper biog. But these are the exact guys who recorded this wonderful Northern Soul smash, "Yes I Love You Baby", written and produced by Detroit legend, Richard "Popcorn" Wylie, and first released on his own label, Top Ten Records, before being licensed out to Laurie Records for national distribution.This legendary floorfiller was yet another legendary Northern Soul smash, that we filmed for "The Strange World Of Northern Soul". This is a piece of classic 1960s Detroit which epitomised the early days of Blackpool Mecca, and the Highland Room. It still sounds great but has been much forgotten and neglected over the years. It was a piece of Motownesque joyful exhuberance on the Laurie label, from 1967, that golden year, and as fine a piece of Northern Soul as you could ever wish to hear. And the very quintessence of the mid Sixties. We recut it in 1999, with Pat Lewis's help in finding the original members, when we were filming our marathon six disc, twenty four hour massive documentary about the entire history of the Northern Soul scene, which contained 131 specially recorded performances of all the classics, and is still available on a six disc box set from Wienerworld. So, we really got all The Dynamics together, and they were more than happy to make this one and only one-time performance especially for us, for our ground breaking Encyclopedia Britannica of Northern Soul, and I am so glad that we did.
