Click here to go to the download page! Episode 90 went live at 4PM PDT August 29th (7PM EDT, 2300 UTC/GMT)... here's the deets:Did Nick, from Episode 88, get busted? We talked to the EFF’s Senior Intellectual Property Attorney, Fred von Lohmann, about P2P file trading, notices from your ISP, and how to know when you're actually being sued. (Nick is fairly safe for now, but, yes, an IP address and a timestamp is enough to get your threatened with a lawsuit.) The EFF must be good folks: They just sued Barney. Another Nick tells us that the rest stops on Iowa’s highways offer free WiFi. Mobile Core 2 Duo (Merom!) Notebooks ShipSlower Meroms, T5500 powered models, didn’t show much boost over Core Duo notebooks… overall, video and audio encoding showed the biggest performance leaps on high end Mobile Core 2 parts like the T7600. Looking for full reviews? Here’s the Dell Inspiron E1405 that dropped 8 hours of battery life, but didn’t offer much performance oomph over Core Duo models. Higher end Core 2 Duo boxes didn’t offer much battery life… but Dell XPS M1710 is the fastest gaming notebook PCMag has tested. Winbook’s T231 costs a third as much as the M1710, and offered temps of 120 degrees… don’t put your drink near the exhaust port. (At least it’s relatively light at 5.3 pounds, the M1710 pigs out at nearly 9 pounds!) Alienware’s Area-51 m5550 was the fastest on video and audio compression bya few points over other Merom notebooks… Want to look at some benchmarks, along with more architecture details? ExtremeTech’s Loyd Case ran a top of the line T7600 thru the wringer… Free Tools, The Missing Falcon, and 802.11n backwards compatibility: Patrick's favorite free photo editing tool... after Paint, anyhow. It's called Paint.NetUm... we didn't have time to run this one: a falcon eating breakfast. On our roof. Seriously. BTW 802.11n should be backwards compatible with b, g and a… if there’s ever a final spec. We’ll have to get in an 802.11n card to test this out in pre-n and draft-n. Newsage: Vista Update... what is the story w/ Blu-ray HD-DVD playback (it ain't a 64bit/32bit thing, it’s a third party thing), 30 minute installs, UAC tweaks, and RC-1 is on the way… Microsoft To Plug FairUse4WM WMV Crack Software Pirate Earns Jail and Fine And, yes, “Federal pound me in the [[something]] prison is an Office Space reference… now go file those TPS forms. It’s like printing to a document on your desktop, instead of a physical printer. Most of you recommended: CutePDF Some folks prefer PDFCreator. PrimoPDF was also popular. Other ideas? Use something with it build in, such OS X, OpenOffice, or Office 12! (Well, when it ships.) Episode 82 went Live at 4PM PDT, August 1st: You can download the show now! We pinballed thru a selection o' topics on the show: Stuff: Ageia's PhysX physics accelerator for gaming. Worth the $300, or spend you gaming dollar elsewhere? Belkin’s Wireless G Travel Router: a palm full o’ 802.11g routery goodness (The Linksys WTR54GS Wireless-G Travel Router with SpeedBooster is pretty sweet, too.Yes, Adam, the US gets a lot of the cool cell phones well after they've hit the streets in the UK or Japan... and £550 (US $1040) sounds steep to us for a PS3 pre-order.And for everybody that's emailing... yup, November 17th is the US release date for the PS3. We forgot. 802.11n: “Should I buy a wireless router now or wait for the real 802.11n?” asks Hal from Sioux Falls, SD. The answer depends on whether it’s for a business that needs industry standards, or if it’s for use just in your home... and, yes, there is a performance difference between Pre-n and Draft-n… and both smoke 802.11g. Questions for the DL.TV Crew: No HyperTerminal in Vista? Mark's looking for a "good open source terminal emulator” to replace it when connecting to the console ports on routers and switches. Email us your reccos! Know a good open source/ad-free utility for printing PDF files: email Robert! News: E3 Downsizing: The biggest party in gaming is going small. Click here to go to the download page! The full show notes minus the video processor questions: Great MP3 Encoder: JD’s on the hunt for a better MP3 encoder than WMP or iTunes, hears that the LAME MP3 encoder is great, but doesn’t want to roll with its command line utility. No worries: there are tons of easy to use GUIs that sit on top of LAME so you don’t have to go near a command line: Exact Audio Copy is an awesome tool for making high quality audio. Razerlame is Robert’s fave front end for LAME. dBpowerAMP is pretty slick, and offers tons of codec support (tho’ you have to pay for MP3 support these days. Stuff: Reviewing Sony’s Sony HDR-HC3. PCMag's Terry Sullivan gave it an Editors’ Choice. Great video… but be forewarned: there’s no mic jack, and the manual controls are a bit… odd. A good ‘real vs. CG” test? George says he’s got one for Robert, Autodesks’s Fake or Foto? It’s pretty disturbing. Anybody seen a test like this for Photoshop hacked photos? Let us know! The Return Of Sam and Max!!! Darren Gladstone stopped by from CGW to give us the scoop on our favorite freelance police duo. This time... this publisher... it’s really gonna ship. Interview: You asked, so the full Seagate interview is available for viewing. And, yup, y’all were right, Dexheimer said 1TB drives by Xmas 2007, not 2006. Wishful thinking on my part!Viewer Questions: Bluetooth headsets and VoIP clients like Skype: we’ve got info for Chad. You had a ton of questions about the Whitehourse video processor/scalar Robert uses in the lab! We’ll have those questions and links (from HTPCs to dScaler to cheap alternates to the Whitehorse) up shortly. News: Digg Fans Hack Netscape US Broadband Subscribers Up 33% in 2005 Intel Slashes Prices 40- 60%, on Pentium D and Pentium 4 CPUs Comments being censored? Wha? We started moderating comments (which means they don't post to the site until we approve them) yesterday on this page after a spate of folks posted pretending to be Patrick ran amuck in the feedback. We always pull spam, info that's false, or particuarly nasty personal attacks on our guests/staffers. Beyond that, it's pretty much open season out there. BTW, if you email us at dl.tv@ziffdavis.com we'll do our best to explain why we do what we do. Comments are back to being unmoderated again. Got a Question? A tip?
