This is pretty dodgy. The quality is shyte. I really am quite crap at compressing stuff so that it still has decent quality. Someone needs to help me with that issue at some point. This took me a pathetic amount of time; and demonstrated that I clearly need to get working in ezeedia on my final project for integrated, otherwise I am going to be screwed. WARNING: the videos in this arent small. You re looking at about 6mb to watch them all. Hmmm. It is that big and still shit quality. I dont know. I have issues. Click the poster to play. You have to find which pictures make the movies play. But then once they are playing you cant stop them. So you either have to be patient, and wait for them one at a time, or you get to experience them all at once (I think it looks cool with them all playing but the music is a bit much). I dont want to influence your viewing patterns or anything of the like but I highly recommend you perhaps click on the photo of me and nay. It links to the best vid. The start of BT s set. Need volume turned up to appreciate it. Though some of you wont appreciate it at all regardless. Im going to make some rhizomes using similar footage once I compress them properly. This was just to get some footage up and running.

The grade finale from Murphy's Lore on September 21, 2005 255 views / likes
Well this is the final installment of my short series of rhizomes. The end of the night: Doing the dishes, a little quiet drunken singing, all the usuals. So, how did it go? Did it make any difference in the problems of the rhizome. Does it make a narrative? Do you see progress? I do. And I felt as though it was more useful than an individual rhizome trying to present the night. Ah well. Was a bit of an experiment. And I think Ill be making more to explore this a bit more. Especially for my essay. I think one of the most problematic things for me is how to present them? Yes I ve made a bit of a series, but where does it go? How does it go? Does it work this way - staggered over several blog entries? Maybe I should put them all in an ezeedia project and allow the user to navigate through the series themselves. Yes I think I shall give that a go. Anyway. So, click on the poster movie to play, and check out parts 1, 2 and 3 if you havent seen them

Part three of the boy s bbq rhizome adventure: it s eating time. I m not entirely sure that this series is playing out as I had hoped. But I do feel as though it is working far more successfully than it would have had I put all of this footage together into the one rhizome. The serial nature allows for a bit more development, and you can see the sections of the story individually (and then in context as part of the whole). Dont know what I m talking about? See Parts 1 and 2. Nearly 3mb. Click poster to play. Listen out for lex saying if i swear lots in her film she cant put it on her blog (I cut out a bit of the footage containing a few obscenities).

Fast or Slow (the second half) from Murphy's Lore on September 06, 2005 228 views / likes
This is the second half of my experiment . Which looks better? The faster version (using rhizome 5) or the slower one (using rhizome 4). Mouse in on the clips in this rhizome and you will slow them down. Is this interesting to watch? Not really I guess. Just wanted to compare the different rhizomes and see which one works best. I guess both 4 and 5 have their places. Though it does seem as though more people are making use of 5. I guess there isnt all that much content that might look more intersting slowed down. Though I do think that this one looks kind of cool when it is slowed down the panels of glass match up and make a pattern thingy. Meh I dont know. Just playing. . Check out his faster brother here.

Fast or Slow from Murphy's Lore on September 06, 2005 327 views / likes
This is the first of two rhizomes I created using the same footage. The footage is of inside an elevator in a shopping center. Now I hope I m not contradicting myself here, because this footage isnt all that exciting, but I feel as though it is a bit interesting to look at. With the lines of the panes of glass kind of making a pattern or rhythm as they meet up in the individual clips, and just the feeling of the whole thing I find it interesting anyway. Plus I hate lifts, and they are normally scary and boring and crammped and make you feel uncomfortable, but this lift isnt bad to ride in, so I figured it at least deserved a rhizome of it s very own. This is using rhizome 5, so when you mouse over one of the clips, it speeds up the other. In my second example (which I unfourtunately cant include in this post), I have used rhizome 4, which does the opposite - they slow each other down. Which one works better? What is the difference? Does one look better than the other one? Why might this be? Just something to think about. Personally I like this one better. Slowing it down might make it seem even more quotidian and boring. Its not so quotidianly boring because you dont often travel in a lift at that extreme speed- but im sure we ve all had to travel in something which is going far too slow (like the lift in rhizome 4) and know just how painful that can be so we probably arent as willing to watch it in a rhizome eh? (On second thought - after watching rhizome 4 version i think i like that one better I dunno). Anyway, check Fast out below (click on the poster image and it will play), and then have a look at Slow.

Murphy's Lore from Murphy's Lore on September 06, 2005 204 views / likes
This is my first play with eZedia. I wanted to make an interactive piece, that was really interactive in a more traditional sense - interactive like a game (a dodgy one yes..). Here the user is in control. They decide where the player goes, they make decisions (though only a few . the game is quite short - I wanted to keep it short and sweet and keep the user s attention, no one watching these things wants to sit down and play five levels of a silly eZedia game by me). I think that in these new media things we are creating rhizomes and eZedia projects, interactivity is the key, it is at the core so this is playing with that in a more literal sense. You can probably tell that this is my first attempt. After making it I have realised that structurally it needs improvement, and could be a lot better than it is but that will come with new projects.

Jane’s Dinner Party from Murphy's Lore on August 27, 2005 168 views / likes
This video was taken on wednesday night. Jane and the boys had a dinner party, and about 13 of our best mates were invited round (it was mostly a girls night except for tom, cam and norto who live in the house). Was a really nice night, Jane is a kitchen goddess, her food was amazing. Plenty of wine was consumed. All in all a very good night. I have used rhizome 2 to create this. I didnt really want to do anything fancy (as in, speed clips up or down), I have just taken this as an opportunity to use this form of media to suit myself a little bit more. Im not really interested in making a clip of cars on a road, or travelling on a tram its not something that im going to want to keep or keep looking at. This, however, is a clip of my closest mates having a great night . and that is something that i want to keep. Something that i find a bit more interesting. In terms of this being a form of quotidian media - it certainly is that - it isnt anything amazing its just friends hanging out. And malleable? Well ive made it malleable in the sense that ive made this clip for me, to suit me (think of it like a photo album.. something to preserve a moment) but anyone who watches this clip can make it their own as well. They re in control (via the controllers at the top). You stop one when you want to. You play or skip through the clips. And in doing so, you put them out of synch. You have changed the properties. You are watching a different clip to the one i created. You have made it your own. . And if it says failed to load , just refresh the page a few times until it get s its act together and loads for ya.

Oh the frustration from Murphy's Lore on August 25, 2005 252 views / likes
Oh good god. It works. And if it isnt working.. then everything has gone wrong again and as you are reading this i am probably banging my head against a poor innocent wall somewhere. I have been tackling the same problem for uncounted hours. My rhizome video refused to load. It would play directly off the desktop, but as soon as I put it in my public html folder via fugu, it all went pear shaped. I dont even know what the problem was. So its not even like i can say well at least i know for next time . But i persisted and changed about every piece of code and saved names and changed folders, and got there eventually. And knowing my luck, as soon as I leave this lab, i bet it wont work and ill have to fix it another day. Grrr. Anyway, I have created this rhizome using rhizome 5. The footage is of traffic at night, along royal pd, it was raining. The clip on the right has not been compressed too heavily. The clip on the right has been compressed a bit more so there is a bit of noise (but not as much as i would have liked . i seem to struggle to make the clips as noisy as i would like. my camera takes really good quality images and i was wondering if that has something to do with the fact that i cant seem to compress them to be artefacty enough ?). I wanted to play wiht the idea of noise In some cases, noise in the sense of pixilation and artefacts, can be rather annoying and make the video less enjoyable. I wanted to see which sort of content might actually look a bit better with additional noise. I think that in this case, the right clip (the noisy one), looks more interestin than the left one. With the extra noise in the clip, it makes the scene almost look foggy, and the lights seem to play more across the clip. You can also alter the speeds of the clips. By mousing on one, you will slow it down and speed up the other. I think this also works interstingly with the noise/no noise comparison - which one looks better sped up or slowed down? . Mouse over to speed up/slow down. Click again to return to original speed.

Travelling from Murphy's Lore on August 22, 2005 204 views / likes
This is my first attempt at a rhizome video. Click on the poster image (a silly looking screen shot of the rhizome playing on my computer..) and the two videos will play simultaneously, independently of one another. Mouse over the first, a clip of a tram trip up Elizabeth St, Melbourne, and you will hear only it s sound (tram and city noises). Mouse over the other, footage from my trip home a few weeks ago, taken about an hour out of Melbourne city, and that is the video s sound that you will hear (rain, car sounds and radio voices). How Very Nifty. NOTE: You need to have Quicktime 7 in order to be able to view this clip.
