This is the first in a series of courses concerned with the traditional Buddhist topics of sila (ethical conduct), samadhi (meditative stability) and prajna (wisdom, true awakeness). The first course emphasizes sila, moral conduct, in ways that already anticipate the other two topics. The course is primarily about meditation, taken in the broad sense of recognizing the relevance of Buddhist teachings to all of life, hence applying both to formal sitting practice, and to the conduct of life in general. The course will explore a practical but also advanced notion of "morality" that relates to complete spiritual fulfillment. It thus provides an entry into higher contemplative teachings, as well as already being an expression of them.
