After the abject treatment of robots as slaves for so many years, it´s time to find some compassion and realise robots can be our friends (and in some instances, yes, even our lovers). The Night Air offers a tribute in song and clanking industrial noise to the history of robot-human friendship - from the days of old tin pants to the invasion of the nanobots.

The Night Air conducts down-low interviews with the patrons of a downtown swingers club; we discover the tricks lonely housewives use to get their husbands home at lunchtime and later in the evening there's a visit to a B&D club -- just to perk us up. It's a bit naughty and a bit nice. We shine astro black atcha as we celebrate Sun Ra `Arrival Day´. Sun Ra's visionary Afro Futurist project, begun in the 1940s, provided fuel for many strands of musical culture: he stood with one foot in rhythm and blues, one foot in free jazz and two hands stretched out into space. His wild, cosmic philosophy and music fed into jazz, funk, reggae and ultimately techno and noise. We discover more about Ra with Amiri Baraka, the legendary poet/playwright/activist who collaborated with Ra in the 1960s and performs the tribute poem, 'Message From Sun Ra'. There are archival clips of the Sun Man himself acting, chatting and delivering a unique 'lecture'; and, of course, there's plenty of Sun Ra's strange and beautiful music. A mysterious agent has arrived in Hong Kong on an unspecified mission. Without a map and relying solely on his intuition - the Agent drifts - his encounters with activists, sidewalk shamans, a feng shui master, teenage hopefuls, artists, shopping arcades, ghost buses, psychedelic trains and red bean dumplings become intriguing clues with which to de-code the city and its inhabitants. The luxury space cruiser hovers along side, reluctant to leave. Interstellar dwellers desiring terra connectivity gather on the outdoor observation deck, some even mimic the camera posings of the locals below. Others simply gaze off into the distance neither at the city below nor at us. After a few moments I turn for a final look at these beings aboard their spectacular craft, then turn my back on them and head down into the fecund city below. In a program dedicated to some very personal stories about grief and hope, looming death and persistent memory we hear extracts from several features, including one on poet John Giorno whose life and work challenge many concepts of love with exuberance and compassion; and Jarman´s Garden, an audio portrait of the final home of film-maker Derek Jarman, made in the bleak expanse of shingle facing the nuclear power station in Dungeness, Kent. There are also extracts from the Triple J feature, When I Die Will I Be Dead?

Collage is maybe the greatest art devised in the twentieth century - and, it seems, likely to last and grow. The audio version of collage continues to inspire thousands of fevered cut-up crazies to delve into the public domain and re-mix history into a more palatable future. Planet Collage is a masterful mix of material from the archives of 2JJ, The Listening Room and The Night Air itself, designed to evoke and promote the joyous art of impossible juxtapositions and imperfect re-alignments.

It is 400 years since the premiere of the world's first acknowledged opera: Monteverdi's L'Orfeo. To celebrate, the ABC invited compositions in the form of an original 4-minute work for radio, which responded to both the Orpheus myth and to the notion of 'opera'. John Jacobs and ABC Classic FM´s Stephen Adams chat about these responses and play a selection of their favourite entries. Trains are romantic and exciting - and they can be spooky. Yet the clock ticks on, with or without you.... A show made in collaboration with producer, Kyla Brettle and students from RMIT University in Melbourne.

Described as `one of the ABC´s small but very bright diamonds´, Scope was also one of the longest-lived and not-infrequently-reviled shows on ABC Radio. It kicked off in April 1958 and ran until early 1976, mostly under the guidance of `frequently-dishevelled, wild-eyed´ producer, Donald Ingram-Smith. A magazine show devoted to exploring a new theme each week, Scope included opinion pieces and interviews, and employed a sometimes-satirical tone. One of ABC Talk´s junior producers in the early 60s was Barry Anthony. Especially for The Night Air´s summer season, Mr Anthony has presented a selection of six typical editions of Scope in a series entitled Reviewing Scope. This evening´s episode is the final in this season and the theme is Glamour - which allows the Scope stylists go absolutely berserk over micro-minis, Mary Quant, diamond eyelashes, hats and The Beatles´ mop-top cult. Mr Anthony also provides a useful list of what was glamorous and what was not in Sydney of the late 60s, early 70s. In the second part of tonight´s programme local collagist Buttress O´Kneel presents her epic 2007 mash-up, Dear Fellow Australians. Using 100% Aussie music and drawing on a diverse range of media sources from radio documentary, talkback and opinion pieces, eventful public performances of the national anthem, and some pretty nasty Cronulla race-riot actuality, she constructs a dynamic montage of mixed messages about 'Australian' values. Or as Buttress herself describes it 'Its part rally-cry, part lament, and part glitch-core docubreak intellectronica party mix!' So hang onto your armbands because with a topic as contested as 'nationhood' some words and ideas in tonight's program may offend some listeners. It kicked off in April 1958 and ran until early 1976, mostly under the guidance of `frequently-dishevelled, wild-eyed´ producer, Donald Ingram-Smith. A magazine show devoted to exploring a new theme each week, Scope included opinion pieces and interviews, and employed a sometimes-satirical tone. One of ABC Talk´s junior producers in the early 60s was Barry Anthony. Especially for The Night Air´s summer season, Mr Anthony presents a selection of six typical editions of Scope in a new series entitled Reviewing Scope. This week the theme is Love - which, as Mr Anthony notes, 'is the most multipurpose word in the whole language; it´s inherent in almost every aspect of living where there is affection and care. We can love anything, from a Holden Kingswood to a football team, from love of thy neighbour as thyself to simply - well, love of thyself...'
