5 Take A Screenshot Of Your Video (Windows) from Freevlog on June 21, 2008 21 views / likes
Flash QuickTime Windows Media Embed by: vPIP Embed (copy ll have to make another version of this tutorial. Hopefully it won t be such a convoluted process. Just a note - there is a little goofup near the end of the video that I mention. It doesn t change the steps that you ll do or anything, it s just a byproduct of the fact that we made all of these Windows screencasts on a Mac. The only time that s been a problem is during this screencast because Macs don t have a print screen button on their keyboards. Pretty exciting stuff huh?

Flash QuickTime Embed by: vPIP Embed (copy re feeling adventurous, here are a few more: H.264 iPod (iMovie Final Cut Pro) Ryanne s Favorite Settings 3ivx Dual Pass P.S. Be sure not to do what I did in this tutorial by naming your file with spaces: Videoblog Extreme.mp4 should be Videoblog_Extreme.mp4 or VideoblogExtreme.mp4 , the internet kind of hates spaces in file names. DOH! What was I thinking?!

Testing, Testing: Sanyo Xacti Waterproof E1 Review from Freevlog on July 10, 2007 63 views / likes
QuickTime | Windows Media The newest Sanyo Xacti E1 just came out and boy is it shiny! The E1 is waterproof and rugged, has a nice big screen and to top it off, the audio and video quality is the best that I ve seen from the Xacti series so far. Check out the video for example clips- I bumped my compression up a bit so you could see close to original quality in this video. Also, here is a link to an original file if you want to play with it in your editing software (right click or ctrl click and save link as): SANY0011.MP4. The E1 still uses the MPEG-4 format, but the codec has changed to h.264. I think that has made a huge difference in the quality of the image. Thanks to Tajee from Voice Bank for letting us play with this camera! If you re looking to upgrade, I would highly recommend this camera, even over the Xacti HD series, whose audio is crummy compared to the E1 (though the E1 does not shoot in HD or in 16:9 widescreen like the HD series). Check out the E1 in the Freevlog Store if you re ready to take the plunge! Technorati Tags: sanyo, xacti, e1, video camera, mpeg4, waterproof, h.264, videoblogging, freevlog

1 How To Install And Setup WordPress from Freevlog on July 05, 2007 60 views / likes
QuickTime | Windows Media This is our first screencast for the Show In A Box project. What s that, you ask? Show In A Box is a collection of tools designed to turn WordPress into the Ultimate Videoblogging Platform. Now, don t worry, we re not dropping Blogger - we love Blogger. Show In A Box (and WordPress) is more powerful than Blogger but that comes at a price - a few dollars for a domain and webhosting and a lot more setup and configuration. So this first screencast just details setting up a mySQL database, installing WordPress, and doing it s initial configuration. This doesn t include adding any of the special Show In A Box stuff that we ve built - it just gets you WordPress installed. The rest will come later. wordpress, screencast

Critical Response Flash Meeting from Freevlog on July 02, 2007 60 views / likes
QuickTime | Flash A couple of weeks ago we started talking about critiquing videoblogs in a flash meeting. Like I say in the video, I ve used this great feedback process with my theater and I think it ll work well for talking about videoblogs too. So, I set up another flash meeting for Tuesday, July 3 at 23:00 GMT (that s 7 p.m. EST, 6 p.m. CST, 4 p.m. PST here in the U.S.). You can figure out your time in relation to GMT here. This is a moderated process where the responsibility of the audience is to not bring their own agenda and to have a desire for the artist to do her/his best work. For this first meeting well be looking at two videos: Stop, Look And Listen by David Howell and Little Iraq by Cheryl Colan There is limited space in the flash meeting so email for an invitation. Continue Reading for more details on the process (more )

Videoblogs On The iPhone from Freevlog on July 01, 2007 90 views / likes
QuickTime | Windows Media Apple has made a big deal about all the iPhone features like it s ability to play videos from YouTube and iPod compatible videos that you ve synced to it from iTunes. The one thing they haven t show is whether it can play iPod compatible videos right from the web using Safari. So my daughter Lauren and I went down to the Apple store today to test it out. What we found out is that the iPhone is pretty slick and handled all the iPod videos we tried. They all worked - those embeded with the blip.tv copy and paste code, with the vPIP plugin, with the Freevlog Pop-up Maker, and even old videos that we just linked to directly. So the bottom line is, as long as your videos work on the iPod they ll work on the iPhone. iphone

What is Creative Commons? from Freevlog on May 21, 2007 60 views / likes
QuickTime Every time you create something like a video for your videoblog (or anything else like a photo, song or book) you automatically own an “All Rights Reserved” copyright on it. And when you put it on the Internet, unless you say otherwise, that’s the license attached to your work. “So what?” you say, “Copyright protects my work from being stolen.” Well, we all know that in reality, nothing will protect your work from being stolen - not even DRM. The idea is to protect your work from being used in ways that you haven’t given permission for. Again, this won’t prevent anyone from doing anything, it just gives you a legal recourse. The problem is that Copyright is “All Rights Reserved.” It doesn’t give permission for anyone do anything with your work. What if you want to make your work available and accessible to as many people as possible? What if you want to allow people to repost your work and tell others about it? What if you want to contribute to the world’s common cultural and intellectual knowledge by allowing others to reuse and build upon your work? Well, that’s where Creative Commons comes in. A Creative Commons license amends your Copyright with the permission for others to use your work in certain ways. Creative Commons licenses span the gap between Copyright - All Rights Reserved and Public Domain - No Rights Reserved. It’s a “Some Rights Reserved” Copyright. The nice thing about hosting your videos on blip.tv or the Internet Archive is that they allow you to select a Creative Commons license when you upload. They use a very simple form, like the one on the Creative Commons site, to help you decide what license is right for you. All you have to do is answer two questions: Do you want to allow commercial use of your work? and Do you want to allow modifications or your work? This will give you one of six different Creative Commons licenses. If you go to the license section of the Creative Commons website and fill out the form, you’ll get a license along with a snippet of code that you can paste into a videoblog post or into your sidebar that will link to a plain English version of your license (the plain English version contains a link to the full legal text) that clearly lays out what someone can do with your work and under what conditions. Here s ours: This work is licensed under a Creative Commons Attribution-Noncommercial 3.0 United States License. Here are a few resources for further information: Creative Commons Poscasting Legal Guide Rules For The Revolution (A podcast that answers legal questions about the laws affecting podcasting and new media.) Creatve Commons Trailers Hurray! from Freevlog on April 30, 2007 42 views / likes
QuickTime Exactly one month ago, SuperHappyVlogHouse happened. The San Francisco contingent decided to make Creative Commons license bumpers for all to use. With more and more aggregator sites pulling vloggers content from RSS feeds, it s important to clearly state your CC license for all to witness. What better way to do that than to put it right in your video? Use these bumpers which we ve added to the Creative Commons Wiki: Marking Work page to display your license in your video. Or you can make your own bumper and share it on the CC Wiki as well! The above trailer created with all CC licensed media by Jackson West. Screencast: Using vPIP from Freevlog on March 28, 2007 45 views / likes
QuickTime I m so excited about this screencast! Here s why: 1. It really sucks when your videos don t play correctly in all browsers - vPIP takes care of that. 2. It s a major PITA to embed video and give your viewers a choice of formats to pick from - vPIP takes care of that. 3. Having multiple embedded videos on a page is a problem - vPIP takes care of that too. 4. Normally you d need your own server or hosting account to run vPIP but Enric, the vPIP developer, has taken care of that too. 5. This is an awesome screencast made by our friend Cheryl Colan, founder of NODE101 Phoenix! So don t leave a comment here - send your love to Cheryl over here. Note: You might be wondering why we re not using vPIP here on Freevlog. Well we thought that the big 640 x 480 videos worked better in a pop-up window that you could move around while you were working. I use on my personal site and Ryanne uses a special version of it on Ryan Is Hungry. Links in this video: vPIP Blogger blip.tv Tags:screencast, screencasting, vpip, node101.
