But everyone is talking about Katie Couric's CBS interview with Republican Vice Presidential candidate Sarah Palin. No, I've worked all my life. In fact, I usually had two jobs all my life until I had kids. I was not a part of, I guess, that culture. The way that I have understood the world is through education, through books, through mediums that have provided me a lot of perspective on the world. Couric: You've cited Alaska's proximity to Russia as part of your foreign policy experience. What did you mean by that? Sarah Palin: That Alaska has a very narrow maritime border between a foreign country, Russia, and, on our other side, the land-boundary that we have with Canada. It's funny that a comment like that was kinda made to … I don't know, you know … reporters. Couric: Mocked? Palin: Yeah, mocked, I guess that's the word, yeah. Couric: Well, explain to me why that enhances your foreign-policy credentials. Palin: Well, it certainly does, because our, our next-door neighbors are foreign countries, there in the state that I am the executive of. And there… Couric: Have you ever been involved in any negotiations, for example, with the Russians? Palin: We have trade missions back and forth, we do. It's very important when you consider even national security issues with Russia. As Putin rears his head and comes into the air space of the United States of America, where do they go? It's Alaska. Digg launched some new features including a recommendation engine in beta. Watch a video where Kevin Rose explains the feature. Digg Inc., a social networking site whose users vote on their favorite news stories, is launching a major expansion even as the general media industry remains in decline. The San Francisco-based company said it would double its staff from 75 to more than 150 over the next year, move into a much larger headquarters building and begin a push into international markets as part of the expansion, which is being funded by $28.7 million in new financing. That investment round, led by Highland Capital Partners, follows previous investments of $11.3 million from other investors since 2005. As part of the new funding, Richard de Silva, a partner at Lexington, Mass.-based Highland, will join Digg's board. Founded in 2004, Digg has grown quickly; the company says monthly visitors to its site have doubled in the past year to more than 30 million. The site allows users to act like editors in choosing what content is most important or interesting. They submit stories, blogs, videos and images that users may vote for—or give them a Digg, as the company puts it—and those with the most positive votes are given greatest prominence on the site. I think there's a pent-up demand on the part of the public to really engage with their media, said Jay Adelson, Digg's chief executive officer. Binside TV was on the red carpet for last night's premiere of Miracle at St. Anna. Spike Lee's friend and mentor director Martin Scorsese attended the screening. The movie opens nationwide on September 26th. Click here to watch the trailer. The war epic directed by Spike Lee is earning Oscar buzz for Lee and the lead actor Laz Alonso. Celebs turned out for the premiere like Kerry Washington who has a role as Zana Wilder and is currently featured in Lakeview Terrace with Samuel Jackson which was number one at the boxoffice. Other cast members who walked the carpet were Wesley Snipes who was originally cast in the movie, Halle Berry's ex Michael Ealey, Derek Luke and Omar Benson Miller. Derek Luke told Binside TV that he was happy for the opportunity to work with directors Spike Lee and Denzel Washington who he has always admired. Another red carpet highlight was our encounter with the energetic cast of the Broadway musical Passing Strange who are stars of Spike Lee's next movie. Binside TV also had the chance to talk to the brilliant composer Terence Blanchard who has collaborated with Spike Lee on twelve movies. It’s a safe bet that Clint Eastwood will be watching Spike Lee’s “Miracle at St. Anna,” if he hasn’t already. Things are finally cool between the two directors, reportedly, after Steven Spielberg brokered a truce, ending the discord that started in May when Lee chastised Eastwood over the dearth of black actors in his WWII movies “Flags of Our Fathers” and “Letters From Iwo Jima.” Lee crafts his own WWII epic, spotlighting the black Buffalo Soldiers in “Miracle at St. Anna,” which opens Friday. “This film is not just about the Buffalo Soldiers 92nd Division. It’s about many things,” Lee said in Toronto’s Four Seasons hotel. Set in a small Tuscan town in 1944 as American forces spurred the Nazi retreat, “Miracle” is also about the “civil war between the Italian citizens who wanted liberty,” Lee said, “versus the ones who wanted to stay under the fascist regime of Mussolini.” The title references the church where “on Aug. 12, 1944, the Nazi 6th Division of the SS slaughtered 560 innocent Italian civilians. Kanye West and his road manager, Don Crowley, were released Thursday afternoon (September 11) from the Los Angeles Police Department's Pacific Division on $20,000 bail following their arrests Thursday morning by Los Angeles International Airport police near the American Airlines terminal. Both men were charged with felony vandalism stemming from an incident at LAX that involved members of the paparazzi, according to a spokesperson for the airport's public-relations office. According to police, West and Crowley were waiting for a flight to Honolulu, when they were met by a photographer and videographer, who started taking their photos. An altercation ensued, and the cameras of both paparazzi were damaged by West and Crowley. On Thursday, TMZ.com reported that West was arrested after grabbing a camera — valued at more than $10,000 — that belonged to a member of the paparazzi and throwing it to the ground, smashing it. We are saddened by the tragic loss of Dave Matthews band saxophone player LeRoi Moore. Despite the death of their saxophonist LeRoi Moore, Dave Matthews Band played on Tuesday night, says People mag, honoring the memory of their departed bandmate in concert. "We all had some bad news today," Matthews told the sold-out Staples center crowd in L.A. "Our good friend LeRoi Moore passed on and gave his ghost up today and we will miss him forever." He was 46. Moore crashed his ATV on June 30 on his farm near Charlottesville, VA. He had been discharged from the hospital and returned to his Los Angeles home to begin a physical rehabilitation program, but complications from the accident sent him back to the hospital on July 17. The band issued a statement on its official website, describing Moore's death as "unexpected." Béla Fleck and the Flecktones saxophonist Jeff Coffin had been sitting in for the band's summer tour. The AP reports that Dave Matthews Band went ahead with their show on Tuesday at L.A.'s Staples Center, where Matthews dedicated the concert to Moore. The Dave Matthews band formed in 1991 in Charlottesville, according to their website, when vocalist/guitarist Matthews tapped Moore and drummer Carter Beauford -- both accomplished jazz musicians in the local Charlottesville music scene -- to help record to tape some songs Matthews had written. Later, after the woman is released from the hospital and back in the poor neighborhood she calls home, we follow her as she embarks on a visit to the supermarket -- the nearest one being 20 blocks away at 110th and Broadway. For the woman, O'Brien says, that means an hour's trip via public transportation just to buy a tomato. It's no way to live, but she's living it. CNN Black America part 2 The stories in the series, anchored by Soledad O'Brien, are sometimes so random that it seems as if they don't fit together. But rather than a grand statement about the race, it's a scattershot snapshot at the way some people live today. The documentary was in the works before Barack Obama's candidacy had any traction, O'Brien told reporters at TV critics' press tour in Los Angeles last week. In fact, what turned out to be part one, broadcast in April on the 40th anniversary of the assassination of Martin Luther King Jr., was the inspiration for further investigation, she said. That event led you to ask, 'Well, where are we now? How far have we come since that day where the dream potentially could have died?' O'Brien said. This is a topic that deserves four hours of coverage, at least. And so it does, starting tonight and concluding Thursday with the focus on men. Are things so split in the black community that the reports have to be divided between women and men? Yes and no, O'Brien said: For logistical reasons, you had to figure out how to block them into two-hour chunks. So just for that reason alone, we had to divide it up. But what we discovered in doing the reporting was there are a lot of issues within the black family that include black men, but then issues that black men have in and of themselves that are specific and particular to black men in this country. Hip-hop artist Nas is protesting Fox News's coverage of Barack Obama. The rapper joined members of the activist groups MoveOn.org and ColorofChange.org to deliver more than 600,000 petitions Wednesday to the network's New York City headquarters. Nas, whose new album Untitled was released last week, said in a statement that "Fox poisons the country with racist propaganda and tries to call it news." The network responded by saying, "Fox News believes in all protesters exercising their right to free speech including Nas who has an album to promote." Fox also noted that its anchor Bill Hemmer was scheduled to interview Obama this weekend. Last month, Fox News referred in a graphic to Michelle Obama, the wife of the Democratic presidential candidate, as "Obama's baby mama." Color of Change and Move On delivered several boxes containing a petition signed by more than 620,000 people to support their cause, although Fox News refused to accept them. Nas briefly spoke to the crowd of nearly 100 people and urged them to stop the racist smears on the Obamas and black Americans. In his speech, he cited examples of remarks made by Fox reporters that he and supporters found to be racist, including a reference to Michelle Obama as Barack Obama's baby mama, and a fist bump between the couple as a terrorist fist jab. Color of Change director Andre Banks said the campaign began about a month ago as an e-mail to the group's members. After hearing Nas' Fox-themed song Sly Fox a couple of weeks ago, he wanted to contact the rapper in hopes to get his support. But a lot of mothers don’t,” he said, adding that he planned to publish a book about the experience this autumn. The bearded Mr Beatie was born a girl and named Tracy Lagondino, but had gender-reassignment surgery and is now legally male and married to Nancy. The couple, together for ten years, run a custom screenprinting business in Bend. He decided to get pregnant because his wife had had a hysterectomy. He was able to conceive because he kept his female organs when he switched genders. To conceive, Mr Beatie stopped the bimonthly testosterone injections he was receiving as part of his sex change. The couple bought anonymous donor vials from a sperm bank and, struggling to find a doctor willing to help them, resorted to home insemination with a syringe bought from a vet that is typically used to feed birds. “I actually opted not to do anything to my reproductive organs because I wanted to have a child one day. I see pregnancy as a process and it doesn’t define who I am,” Mr Beatie told the TV talk-show host Oprah Winfrey in April. “I feel it’s not a male or female desire to have a child. It’s a human need. I’m a person and I have the right to have a biological child,” he said. Mr Beatie caused a sensation when he went public with his pregnancy in Advocate, a gay magazine.
