My Damn Channel from Pop17 on June 25, 2008 12 views
mov | wmv | m4v | 3gp My Damn Channel is an online video network competing with networks like Revision3, Next New Networks while disrupting even larger networks like MTV. MDC is focused on providing repeatable, professional content with a variety of different ad supported verticals such as comedy and tutorials. Harry Shearer, the brilliant actor/comedian/writer, produces a channel on the network. I was delighted to interview Rob Barnett at their office in NYC. My favorite show is You Suck at Photoshop. It s a fun tutorial series about photoshop tricks that makes me ROFL. For more information, see NewTeeVee s cover of their launch almost exactly one year ago. Who Will Buy A 3G iPhone? from Pop17 on June 18, 2008 27 views
mov | 3gp | m4v Last year the launch of the iphone was revolutionary. Everyone knew about it. When Steve Jobs gave his keynote in San Francisco at WWDC I went to the Prince Street Apple store in SoHo, New York to get opinions from people shopping. Chris Pirillo is getting one for the GPS. Maybe it isn t necessary for everyone, but it s going to be really cool to see the apps developed for GPS on the 3G iphone. I can t wait. It s so exciting!! Many prefer the titanium look of the first gen model and don t like the plastic look of the 3G iphone. I like the feminine look of the white 16GB model for $299. It s got that classic Apple feel. Ahhh . My iphone is one of my best friends. I want an upgrade, but I m not 100% sure if I will be waiting in line July 11th. Should I get the white 16GB 3G iphone? Will people with first generation iphones upgrade to 3G? Is it just a trend? I d love to hear your thoughts.

How To Make A Live Show from Pop17 on June 03, 2008 51 views
mov | wmv | 3gp | m4v I have been getting a lot of emails recently asking me how I make my live show. I m lucky to have the help of Mogulus and their studio. I also use an N95 phone which I broadcast on to Flixwagon when outside of the studio. Some of the equipment I use for the live show is not necessary, but adds an extra layer to the production quality compared to streaming right off your laptop (which I also do sometimes as well) What are some of your favorite gadgets, accessories and software for live streaming?

JenniCAM from Pop17 on May 29, 2008 39 views
mov | wmv | 3gp | m4v Jennifer Ringley started JenniCAM in 1996. She was the first lifecaster to stream her life 24/7 and can be considered the woman who inspired Reality TV. In 2003, CNN quoted her saying, I keep JenniCam alive not because I want or need to be watched, but because I simply don t mind being watched. The site disappeared that year along with Jenni s internet identity, but she will always be remembered for the groundbreaking work she did on JenniCAM.

Indy Mogul from Pop17 on May 19, 2008 54 views
I went to Prospect Park in Brooklyn and met with the team at Indy Mogul to celebrate their one year anniversary. Indy Mogul releases three shows a week that help people find out about film making. They show you everything from how to make a web show on a low budget to creating special effects. The crew is with Next New Networks producing 5 minute episodes for the web full time. On their YouTube channel alone they are just about to hit the 20,000 subscriber mark and have 180 videos on the site. Their active participation with their audience is discussed on their wikipedia page - Indy Mogul s audience is highly influential in the direction of the show, not only by making requests for effects and asking questions, but by following in the footsteps of the Indy Mogul crew and passing on their own knowledge of film making. Forum members have been brought on as bloggers for the site and many viewer submitted tutorials have gained many views on YouTube. Music by Podington Bear.

I look forward to watching their shows and seeing what wacky and fun ideas they come up with.

TheHill88 And Caitlin Hill’s Story from Pop17 on May 12, 2008 33 views
mov | wmv | 3gp | m4v I sat down with YouTube fame, Caitlin Hill, who has just relocated from Australia to New York City. She is an actress, dancer, video blogger, blogger and is looking to get more involved with live video. I asked Caitlin to explain some of her greatest challenges. She says: The challenges that one faces when they are a video blogger is remaining true to themselves. There is so much criticism and when you are also editing yourself you get to see a side of you that you have never seen, and you become highly critical of yourself. You also start to change yourself to fit what the audience likes OR you change yourself to go against what the audience likes. It can shatter confidence and increase self-doubt. The hardest thing I face now, is just getting back to basics and also just getting off my butt and making the videos I ve been dreaming about for years. That s the problem, I m too lazy. Another thing that is hard is keeping up with it all. The Internet is 24/7, as we all know, and as soon as you close your eyes, your whole digital world can change. It s not a very stable environment to grow up in ; )

Superstar Internet Woman from Pop17 on May 08, 2008 51 views
mov | wmv | 3gp | m4v Veronica Belmont has leveraged her internet fame off a variety of different platforms. She has networked her way to the top and is one to look out for. Currently she is co-hosting Tekzilla. I asked Veronica how she did it. She says, I think the most important thing is to cross-promote between networks. I obviously use different networks for different reasons, and so attracting people from one place (like Twitter) to another (like Flickr or Facebook) is relatively easy if you have good content to show them.

mov | wmv | 3gp | m4v Chuck Norris is so popular online that the crowds voted for Ian Spector to tailor his site toward facts about Chuck Norris. LOLCat Bible from Pop17 on April 30, 2008 36 views
mov | wmv | 3gp | m4v LOLCat Bible is a wiki that allows anyone collaborate to translate the bible into LOLCat talk. The Bible has not been translated, though many collaborate to get there, in it s entirety. Martin monitors the web site to make sure there are non inappropriate images posted to the wiki. One would imagine that the LOLCat Bible would not be a sufficient source to learn about the scripture, however, many are fulfilled in visiting the site by a cultural phenomenon that is worth checking out.

Watch Web Shows and TV on the Internet from Pop17 on April 23, 2008 39 views
mov | wmv | 3gp | m4v On the streets of SoHo, I asked people to tell me about their experiences watching internet videos. One guy told me about the Max Mosley scandal video that came out as a result of YouTube. Clearly, citizen journalism is shaping what people watch. People go to the internet to watch fiction, comedy, entertainment and news. Jamison Tilsner and Josh Cohen curate, catalog and critique online shows on their website, Tilzy.tv They also blog about new developments in the developing online video industry. I sat down with Jamison and Josh in Washington Square Park to discuss the shows they are watching now. They recommend ViralCom and Cspot.

Pal Talk Office Tour from Pop17 on April 21, 2008 30 views
mov | wmv | 3gp | m4v Joel Smernoff, the President of Pal Talk, invited me to his office downtown on Wall Street. Paltalk is a live streaming company that has been around for over 10 years but has not been regarded as a competitor to Ustream, Justin.tv, Mogulus, Yahoo live or other live streaming companies in the same class. This may be the case because the platform is not Apple-friendly and requires installing an application that seems somewhat counter-intuitive to me. However, they are coming out with a flash application soon which may help for ease of use.

Twitter, YouTube and Communities via spam bots from Pop17 on April 16, 2008 21 views
mov | wmv | 3gp | m4v In today s society the fights we get into online often materialize in the real world, sometimes resulting in negative social interactions all together. Lisa Nova likely used bots to build her friends and subscribers on YouTube and despite the backlash, is currently one of the most subscribed-to on YouTube. I appreciate Ze Frank s Color War approach, however I m more fascinated in the relationship and the connections we make online. Ze started the game and everyone joined in to pick a team. Rocketboom founder, Andrew Baron, put up an auction on Ebay for his followers and has since taken the auction down. Both Ze and Andrew have a lot in common. They are creators of popular online shows, have the same birthday, went to the same schools and are currently experimenting with twitter to find the meaning to it. Weird. At the time Twitter announced closing series A funding with Union Square Ventures, Charles River Ventures, and other angel investors - Andreessen, Costolo, Conway, and Ravikant - they also changed their terminology from friend to follower. It seems like they made the right move based on the low barrier to entry. Chris Penn of financial aid podcast is an online community expert who shared his thoughts on what the relationship of a connection is worth and the recent Andrew Baron twitter auction on ebay. Just today, Andrew deleted the auction. At the end of the day it s interesting to see how many followers, connections and friends online actually translate to the real world.
