UNICEF: Water and sanitation challenges in Niger from recent posts - blip.tv (beta) on July 21, 2008 6 views
NIAMEY, Niger, 17 July 2008 -- The latest UNICEF-World Health Programme Joint Monitoring Programme report focuses on sanitation improvements. The report finds that while more people are drinking water from safe sources, far too few are using improved sanitation. Niger has one of the lowest rates of improved sanitation, and problems remain with water supply there. Unsafe water and poor sanitation and hygiene are among the underlying causes of Niger's high child mortality rate. Water-borne diseases account for nearly 20 per cent of deaths in children under the age of five here. Less than 45 per cent of the population has access to clean water, and less than 10 per cent to adequate sanitation. These statistics are well below Niger's targets for achieving the Millennium Development Goals. UNICEF is supporting the Government of Niger by working with communities to improve access to safe water and household water treatment and sanitation. By raising awareness of good hygiene practices such as hand washing and using family latrines, the country can prevent diarrhoea and reduce child deaths. GRITtv: July 21, 2008 from recent posts - blip.tv (beta) on July 21, 2008 12 views
Tonight on GRITtv our media roundtable reviews the best and worst of last week with Jeff Cohen, Director of the Park Center for Independent Media at Ithaca College, Lionel, the author of Everyone s Crazy Except You and Me and host of the Lionel Show on Air America, and Michelle Chen a freelance writer in NY. There were plenty of big stories but the major news outlets seemed incapable of covering them well. It was a grim week. From coverage of John Ashcroft s testimony before congress to McCain s pronouncement that Social Security is an absolute disgrace, there was a dearth of quality reporting. So where do we go to get our news? Find out here. And an interview with Martha Burk, Director of the Corporate Accountability Project for the National Council of Women s Organizations and the author of Your Money and Your Life: High Stakes for Women Voters in '08 and Beyond. Burk, an advisor on women s issues for Bill Richardson, lays out in plain English why feminism is about political, social, and economic equality. She takes on everything from Social Security (the main source of women s retirement) to taxation, pay equity, and the role of women in the armed services. Women are a majority of voters in the United States, something John Kerry seemed to not understand in 2004. Is Obama making the same mistake? Finally a commentary from David Sirota, Brave New Films' new Rove campaign, and a preview of a gorgeous work from DJ Spooky/Paul D. Miller, as he sets out to record the sound of a continent. "Terra Nova: Sinfonia Antarctica," will be performed in full at the BAM Opera House for the Next Wave Festival in December '09. He's also bringing a version to Denver during the DNC.
