Can you put the moon into orbit?: A Rebuttal
Can you put the moon into orbit?: A Rebuttal

I'd like to draw everyone's attention to a web page entitled "Can you put the moon into orbit?" (You may need Firefox 1.5 to view it), which appears to be a simple game of trying to get a small ball to orbit a big ball along a little pink path by launching it from earth, space, or somewhere already along the pink path. Until you read the instructions. In the instructions, the author writes something along the lines of "See how difficult it is to get the moon into its orbit when launched from the earth or from outer space? You can't do it, can you? But look how easy it is when you start the moon already along its path." He then goes into a mostly scientific ramble that ends with "Some people think the moon was place in its orbit, but those people just aren't very scientific, are they?" Did you see what he did there? He tried to use a quasi-scientific "experiment" to convince people that "God" just stuck the moon on its orbital path and gave it a little nudge. Aside from the non-scientific argument that "God" could probably find a more sophisticated way of getting the moon where he/she/it wanted it, there are some methodological flaws in this experiment. First and foremost, the author represents the moon's orbit as a perfectly circular path. This is not accurate. While the moon's orbit is surprisingly close to being a circle, it is actually an ellipse. This is an important fact, because the author's argument hinges around this. If launched from space or the earth, a perfectly circular orbit would be impossible without other interference; which brings me to my next point: The simulation fails to take into account the gravitational effects of the other planets and, more importanly, the sun. Now, I'm not going to go and do an experiment of my own incorporating these forces, this article's intent is merely to expose the errors in the experiment as it currently exists. Moving on, the author also suggests that the moon could have been formed by dust and other particles clumping together, but that each of the particles would have the same problem as the "moon" that you are trying to get into the orbital path around the "earth" in his web page. This, he claims, would just create more problems. Perhaps he is forgetting that each of these particles would have its own orbit and its own (however small) gravitational pull. It is not hard to imagine that some combination of these particles was able to clump together at the moon's current orbit. I wrote this article to help people look at this website logically and scientifically. It is not an argument for or against the existence of "God." It is merely a critique of the web site in question. The website's ideas and premises are good ones, but I didn't want anyone to think that it was a real scientific study or take the author's findings to heart. I applaud the author's programming ability as well as his site design, but his experiment is far from scientific and does not prove the existence of "God" or another supreme force. If you really want to know the truth, it is important not to let the Bible or other people think for you. Please think for yourself. Thank you for reading. P.S. Please link to this article if you think others would be interested in it. This information won't help anyone if they never see it.

So, even though I'm really not sure I like the airport here or the job I'm doing, I'm up to my third celebrity. Yup, Billy Idol. (The others are Michael Paine and Danny Glover.) This one's in windows media video - it's about the same size and quality as the Quicktime ones... please let me know which format you like better. (I posted in wmv this time because it's easier to use the program that makes wmv on my windows comp.)

So, I'm still learning things about my new house, like what I can and can't do in certain areas... It's ok to laugh.

So, sometimes the best way to cope with things you don't like or disagree wth is to laugh about it, so here are the most amusing things I could post: I accidentally watched the Prayer Breakfast this morning as I was heading out to work. It really reminded me of porno, because it was just George Bush and a bunch of other guys standing around, jerking each other off, and saying GOD, LORD, JESUS as many times as they could. (Had to share that, because everyone I said it to thought it was funny.) And here's some stuff I took from a friend's journal. The video's worth watching, sorry for the slow download. And here's a little video I'd like to call "President Bush Contradicts Himself - Again."
