HD: Manoa Geeks from HawaiiVog on February 27, 2008 105 views / likes
The February 2008 gathering of Manoa Geeks saw a record turnout. Hosted at Oceanit in downtown Honolulu, about 50 local technology and web gurus and fans came together to talk shop. Adobe code development, the semantic web, the Microsoft-Yahoo deal, and the Apple MacBook Air were among the many topics discussed. Manoa Geeks is the brainchild of Aaron Dragushan of Wondermill. The first gathering took place in March 2007 at a coffee shop in Manoa (hence the name), with a handful of people. But soon, it outgrew most meeting spaces and is now hosted by local companies hoping to make connections with the talented and creative minds that attend. Aoki's Shave Ice from hawaii on Vimeo. President's Day 2008 was a spectacularly beautiful day of sun and blue skies, considering the usually grey weather of February. I also unexpectedly had the day off from work. So after a visit to the neighborhood pool, the family and I drove up to Haleiwa for shave ice. Aoki's (66-117 Kamehameha Hwy.) is located a stone's throw from the much more hyped Matsumoto's, but it's our preferred destination for the cool treat. Hawaii Democratic Caucus from hawaii on Vimeo. The Hawaii Democratic Caucus was held the evening of Tuesday, Feb. 19, 2008. Prior to this year's hotly contested race between Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama (who was born in Hawaii), the state's record turnout for the primary caucus was 4,800 people in 1988. Last night, over 36,000 people turned out to participate. Long lines everywhere, chaos and confusion in several locations, and handmade ballots had to suffice for many when the printed ones ran out. In the end, Obama received 76 percent of the Hawaii Democratic vote, versus Clinton's 24 percent. HD: Miller Street Memorial from HawaiiVog on January 23, 2008 135 views / likes
Miller Street Memorial from hawaii on Vimeo. On Jan. 17, 2008, 23-month-old Cyrus Belt was killed when a neighbor threw him from a bridge onto the H-1 freeway. The city of Honolulu was united in grief over the horrific murder of the young boy, whose all-too-brief and troubled life has since become the focus of intense scrutiny and debate. While some people scramble to assign blame, hundreds of others have quietly convened every day at the spot where Cyrus Belt was killed. While some people are picking apart the people in his life, hundreds of strangers are simply moved by his tragic death, building a remarkable makeshift memorial of flowers, balloons, toys, letters, and other offerings. The sprawling shrine to the toddler at the Miller Street pedestrian bridge has grown so large, local transportation officials are struggling to balance Honolulu's need to mourn with the safety of nearby residents and passing motorists. These video clips were recorded on Tuesday, January 22, 2008. The above is the embedded video player from Vimeo, one of the only online video hosts to serve up HD content. Imiloa Astronomy Center from hawaii on Vimeo. A visit to the fantastic Imiloa Astronomy Center at the University of Hawaii at Hilo on the Big Island. The center emphasizes both astronomy and Hawaiian culture, and notably uses the Hawaiian language throughout. The low-light conditions definitely put the Xacti HD700 to the test. I could have bumped up the ISO to bring out a little more detail, but I was curious to see what the basic settings would produce. Anuenue Playground from hawaii on Vimeo. The cool, green town of Waimea (a.k.a. Kamuela) is home to what could be Hawaii's best playground. Anuenue Playground, an incredible wooden wonderland, was built and is maintained by the entire community. It's a must-visit stop as we pass through on our way from Hilo to Kapa'au. Given the subject matter, there's a lot of shaky handheld camera work here (including an ill-advised trip down a slide), which doesn't necessarily mix with the HD widescreen format. Bon Dance by Flip Video from HawaiiVog on August 04, 2007 453 views / likes
Scenes from the annual Obon ceremony and bon dance at Waipahu Soto Zen Taiyoji, including a performance by a local taiko troupe. This video is a test of the Flip Video camera out of Pure Digital. It's a cheap ($130), simple (four buttons), basic digital video camera designed for "the YouTube generation." It records up to an hour of MPEG-4 AVI video on its built-in memory and transfers to our computer via a built-in USB plug. It doesn't get much easier than this! The video files don't work "out of the box" on Mac computers, at least not without a special codec (provided) or running QuickTime in Rosetta mode (for pre-Intel machines). But software is provided for basic viewing and transferring on OSX. Windows users get free "Movie Mix" software, a bare-bones utility to edit clips together, add some basic themes and a soundtrack, and export versions optimized for YouTube or Grouper (now Crackle). This movie was assembled using "Movie Mix" (running on XP under Parallels), which generated a WMV file. I then converted the WMV to an iPod-optimized H.264 encoded MPEG video for my videoblog. Though obviously too limited for hardcore vloggers, the Flip Video is perfect for someone looking for an affordable and easy way to share movie clips online. It's also a great choice for kids who have the movie-making bug, but to whom you're not quite willing to entrust your more expensive gear. You can also view this video at YouTube, Google Video, and BlipTV. The iPod-optimized MP4 file served up in the feed (MP4/60MB) is here. Apple Store Kahala Grand Opening from HawaiiVog on February 11, 2007 318 views / likes
Hawaii got its second Apple Store today at Kahala Mall. The 5,000-square-foot Apple Store Kahala is the first Apple Store opening in three months, and is part of Apple's ambitious plan to open as many as 40 stores in 2007. First in line, at 3 a.m., was Dean Masai. And before the opening, the store was blessed by Hawaiian chant and hula. Kahala Mall is still reeling from major flooding last year, and lost several tenants. The hope is that the Apple Store will help draw people back to the shopping center, situated in East Honolulu. You can also view this video at YouTube, Google Video, and BlipTV. The iPod-optimized MP4 file served up in the feed (MP4/42MB) is here. Hawaii State Legislature Opening Day from HawaiiVog on January 18, 2007 198 views / likes
The Hawaii State Legislature kicks off each session with Opening Day ceremonies, featuring much pomp and circumstance, music, and food. Lots of food. While the speeches and music are a draw, and all the open doors at the State Capitol provide an excellent opportunity for lobbyists and activists to plead their case, most of the crowd packs the halls of government for the free lunch. Familiar faces captured include Ed Case, Will Espero, Karl Rhoads, Carol Fukunaga, and Josh Green. Music is "Life In These Islands" by Kaukahi, as performed live at Opening Day. You can also view this video at YouTube, Google Video, and BlipTV. The iPod-optimized MP4 file served up in the feed (MP4/26MB) is here. You can also download the movie in other sizes and formats here, courtesy the Internet Archive.

go! Interisland from HawaiiVog on January 07, 2007 198 views / likes
For our New Year's trip to the Big Island, our family flew go! (a subsidiary of Mesa Air Group of Phoenix, Ariz.), which operates four Bombardier CRJ-200ER jets for its interisland service. With ticket prices as low as $19, go! has been aggressively battling Hawaii's two incumbent, locally-grown carriers, Hawaiian Airlines and Aloha Airlines. All five of us traveled for what it would've cost for just two of us three years ago. The jets are smaller and the frills non-existent (they charge you for juice), but they get you there, and that's what matters. Our kids, especially, loved boarding from the tarmac. Music is "LostCode" from Plethora by MRDC (Magnatune). You can also view this video at YouTube, Google Video, and BlipTV. The iPod-optimized MP4 file served up in the feed (MP4/30MB) is here. You can also download the movie in other sizes and formats here, courtesy the Internet Archive.
