Tyre Down: Motorcycle Tie Down System Review
from MotorCycle Mania on June 24, 2008

Tie Down Your Motorcycle Simply and Easily Without Straining Your Front Forks or Handlebars! Tyre Down is THE Answer! I love how my Duacati Monster fits in my VW Van so easily. But tying it down was a bit of a pain. I hated compressing the front forks for any length of time and wondered about the strain I might be placing on the handlebars. Itis at least three hours from Port Augusta to Adelaide and vice versa and what if I packed the night before for an early start (often done). How much constant compression would the front forks take without affecting them long term? No don t get all biker bitch on me and tell me to ride! I would rather do that but these trips are for a week or so and require laptops, briefcases and lotsa clothes, so it s the van or not at all for the bike. The Adelaide Hills are too sweet to miss when Ivisit Adelaide, even on business. And besides the R1200GS is the tourer, this is the hotrod, my back tells me so! An option I saw at the Grand Prix at Phillip Island last year looked promising. It was the Tyre Down system which held the bike down via the BACK wheel! I wanted something simple, quick and easy to tie a bike down with, and of course it had to work! This looked like the goods so I had a lengthy chat to Rob Purcell, one of the company owners. Once the Ducati arrived the novelty of tying down by the handlebars soon wore off. It was cramped, I didn t like the idea of bumping the tank as I worked with straps and metal ends. I used the soft handlebar straps which worked OK but still put pressure on the bars and compressed the forks into the Ventura front wheel rack I had fitted. So Igot a Tyre Down device! And review it here. In this podcast I talk about: How it fits compared to the website instructions. Considerations for the Ducati Monster model. Quality of build. Ease of use. Comparison of rear tie down to front tie down. Would I recommend it? Here s some photos showing how it all works for me in the van. Of course it would be easier again if you used a trailer. Here s a shot of the empty Van. Notice the Ventura front wheel rack mounted at the front? This helps stabilise the bike really well. I definetely recommend this for the front end. Notice the chains? I talk about those in the podcast. This is another shot showing the front wheel in the Ventura Rack. Yes, it looks messy but does the job without bolts. Here s the Tyre Down left side. And, here s the Tyre Down right side. The only contact is a slight touch with the lower pipe on this side. Which I padded for protection. Doesn t seem to rub, at this stage. This is how it looks once fitted. I did actually re do it after the photo and straighten the device on the wheel. I know it looks off centre. And it was! I was simply too lazy to take another photo! Airhawk For Ducati Monster

Airhawk Motorcycle cushion Fits Ducati Monster. I am a dead set fan of these cushions. I have travelled tens of thousands of kilometres with an Airhawk on the Harley and the BMW and wouldn t head off without it. I also have the car/truck seat version on both seats in the Van and the utility Airhawk cushion on my office chair. Like I said I am a BIG fan of this Airhawk stuff. Once tried you won t go without it. I don t. The Ducati was another kettle of fish as the seat was much smaller. I spoke to Tom Thornley the Airhawk Guy and he told me he had sold plenty to sports bike riders who used the small pillion model which I already had for my wife. There were a few issues at first with the Monster, and once I overcame these it worked a treat. Here s how it looks on the bike. Shame about getting old and spoiling the smooth visuals but you can t see it once my lard arse is on the bike anyway. As you can see it fits quite nicely and covers most of the available seat. It fits on snugly with the supplied straps which have what I would call bra clips to adjust them. It goes on and off quickly if you want it to yet remains attached quite snugly. This means it doesn t blow off if you lift your butt off the seat to stretch your legs. In this podcast I talk about: The correct inlation pressure. Why the Airhawk works. The issues I had with the Ducati Moster and how I fixed them. Where to get one of your own. Airhawk Motorcycle Cushion The difference it made. Download Standard Podcast Got a comment? Ventura Estoril Seat Bag Suits Ducati Monster, and others.

This Ventura Estoril Seat Bag Looks and Works A Treat! The seat bag might have a funny name, I mean what s an Estoril , but it works a treat. After picking up the new Monster S4R it didn t take long to work out there was no room for anything, sunnies, sunscreen, earplugs, whatever. ( You could fit this to almost any bike) I asked the Ducati guys about options and nada, zilch, nooptions on this issue. So I did some research and found a bikeshop in Adelaide (Bills Motorcycles) who had what I wanted to look at. How rare is that! Upon inspection I reckoned it would do just fine, gave it a dry run in the car park and handed over the money. It was only about $110 so pretty good value I thought. This thing went on like a factory accessory and in fact I went across the road to the Ducati guys and showed them. They were so impressed they ordered some to stock. In this podcastI talk about: Fit: Quality: Looks: Ease of Fitment: Does it Work: Here s a few piccy s You can see it looks like a bought on and you can clip it off and on. Anyway I ll tell you all about it in the review. Please leave a comment, below. Download Standard Podcast

Boostaroo Audio Amplifier

Boostaroo Amplifies Helmet Speakers or Any Portable Speakers For That Matter After fitting speakers into my helmet see REVIEWI found the sound level wasn t quite loud enough. Part of the problem I later discovered was a dodgy cable and mostly resolved after replacing. However this small amp works a treat. It raises the volume about 12db which in real world is good. Certainly enough to blow your eardrums out with your ipod with speakers inserted in your ears. I was using through helmet speakers wearing earplugs. Without the boostaroo and a reasonably calm (not windy) day they work fine to hear some music and the GPS directions. Not loud enough to boogy to but serviceable. With the Boostaroo the audio is loud enough for any day. Still not boogy level but loud enough to destroy the speakers over time I reckon. If you are not using earplugs then amazing sound! It takes two AA batteries and will power three speaker sets. So ideal to plug the pillion in as well. I bought it HEREand cost was $48.95 plus shipping. Service and shipping was pretty quick and no gripe about anything with that. R1200GS Screen: Eliminates Buffeting

Vario Screen Solves Buffeting Problem of Standad GS Screen. Don t know about you, but the buffeting of the standard GS screen used to send me batty. Yet my mate who is shorter (I m 180cm) never seems to have a problem with his bike. I m not even sure if buffeting is the right word? It just used to rattle my helmet. I tried two different helmets and it rattled them both. It sems the standard screen disturbs the air at a particular height above the screen and you either cop it or you don t, depending on your height in the saddle. After 30,000+ k s I decided I d do something about it. One of the options was an extension but they looked a bit tacky and the lower mounts needed strengthening also. I also felt it would permanently mark the original screen. I also couldn t find anyone who would or could categorically state that this fixed the problem anyway. After searching the bike mags for an ad that instilled me with confidence I gave Mick Owen a call in Canberra. Mick was very helpful and spoke authoritatively about the problem and a remedy. He suggested the Vario split screen! Its a bit taller and is in two sections which seem to split the air and take the volume out of the disturbed air. In the pic above you can see the split. Also note the adjustment between the screens. I have mine at full height. In this pic you can see the difference between Vario and Standard screens on the bikes. Got some remarks that the screen looked better and tell the truth I reckon it did. In this podcast I talk about: About 8 minutes Whats in the box: How easy does it fit: Quality: Adjustment settings: Is it any good: Tell me what you think! Please leave a comment below. 2008 Ducati Monster S4R Review

Ducati Monster Review S4R Well, I bought me one. So you could conclude I liked it after I test rode it? But after the adrenaline subsides and the grin slowly drops out your face and you see the HOLE in the bank balance, what do you really think? You see, I m not a Journo who gets a bike given to him on the proviso he says nice things and has the bike for a couple of days! I PAID the money!!!!!!!!!!! Here s what I think: I review this bike in this podcast and look at . Comfort: and some changes I made to improve. Performance: and some changes I made to improve. Looks: and some changes I made to improve. Handling: and some changes I made to improve. It really is a sexy beast and after fitting the FULL race system, sounds an absolute treat. It goes a tad better too!!! It sprobably afunny addition to my garage coming from a long term Harley Wide Glide and Current BMW R1200GS you d reckon something a bit more along the granny line might fit in better. But I love the little devil. I recently did a 4,000k trip with a mate on our Beemers through NSW and Victoria and they couldn t be faulted and performed and handled like a chook chaser shouldn t. We even tried to pick faults over a few beers each night butcouldn t really find anything worth penalising them for. However As perfect a touring bike the BMW R1200GS is, I couldn t wait to get home and take the Little Duke for a blast. In fact almost as soon as I unpacked the BM I threw the Monster in the van and headed for a few days in Adelaide and the HILLS! It was nagging into my subconcious almost the whole trip. The Duke s wildness genewas gnawing at me and needed to be scratched. It always has that effect when I enter the shed. Drawing my eye and begging to be started just to hear the growl. The Ducati snot perfect! I tell it warts and all here. If your thinking of buying one I hope my review can help you. Download Standard Podcast Tell me what you think! Leave a comment.

BMW System 5 (Flip Up) and Sport Integral Motorcycle Helmets
from MotorCycle Mania on February 05, 2008

Review Of BMW Sport Integral and System 5 Motorcycle Helmets. Which One IsBest? The reason I bought the System 5helmet was, I dropped my other helmet and cracked it. It was a BMW Sport Integral and I got that helmet because my old AGV was worn out and the new AGV models didn t fit as good anymore. I loved the Sport Integral, it was light, very quiet and fitted my bonce superbly. My only gripe with it was a very small orifice to get your head in. I guess that s why it was so quiet. I did gripe about it cracking seemingly easy too, I guess thats why it s light? After dropping it from about 1.2 metres it cracked across the back, which pissed me off as I d only had it a year, and they re not cheap (around $550). It was the only time I dropped it. I d always wondered about the flip front helmet and decided to spend the dough (Over $700 ouch!) and get a good one (I hoped). I first noticed its slightly heavier but not noticeable after a while. I also noticed how quiet it was! Which pleasantly surprised as I hate noisy helmets. In this podcast Andy talks about both the Sport Integral and the System 5 helmets from BMW and how they compared to his AGV helmet. If you ve wondered what they re like, you ll find out here. They fit different, ventilate different and feel different, which one is best??????? It s all covered in the audio. These Helmet Speakers Installed Easily and Worked Well. I bought and installed these speakers inside my BMW System 5 helmet and you wouldn t know they are there. They fitted that well. I had tried to use audio earplugs and they just didn t work for me. I didwant audio while riding to pick up my GPS directions. I had tried the Garmin Zumo 550 without audio and it was too cumbersome trying to read the screen and ride at the same time, probably a tad dangerous to me and everyone else around me too! I wasn t too worried about wires and have found an easy route for them on the R1200GS. One bonus was the 2 GIG card I fitted into the GPS and filled with music. The beauty of the wired speaker versionover the bluetooth speaker option is you get stereo with the wired version and only mono with the bluetooth ones. So occaisionally a bit of music on the boring bits. Funny thing about the music was I found it distracting on the twisty bits, I much more enjoyed getting into the road and found the tunes annoying. I have discovered audio mp3 books and will download and try one on an upcoming trip to Alice Springs, lots of straight bits there. I this podcast Andy covers the purchase process, fitting, wiring routing, quality, volume, value for money and real world performance. You can check out the speaker web site by clicking this banner You can see the speakers in this photo there is also a volume control switch inline. This ends up close to the helmet and seems to work fine. I found it accessible and easy to use. Please leave a comment and tell me what YOU think. Download Helmet Speaker Review

Ducati Hypermotard vs Ducati Monster S4R

Ducati Motorcycles Are A Blast, I ve Discovered. I did a poker runthe otherweekend around the Flinders Ranges on Wilma the Wideglide. After spending over $11,000 on rebuilds and replacement parts in the last three years and having her running like a potent swiss clock you d reckon I d behappy. She runs smoother than ever with way more power yet something just didn t feel right. I wasn t getting the grin I used to. I d been in the Harley scene for 14 years and done a ton of rallies, had the badges to prove it, even run out of room on my jacket for the yearly rockers from H.O.G. and somehow came to realise as I was powering home from Port Germain, I m over it, I m ready for a change. And yet I thought I d keep Wilma the faithfull Wideglide forever. I guess the BMW R1200GS sitting in the garage spoiled me for a bike that handled, stopped and went well, and got me hankering for a taste of a little bit of exotica. So I put Wilma up for sale and withinmy Harley group one mate had a mate looking for just my typre of well loved and cared for ride. So it seems she is gone from my life. The memories I get to keep and I had a real ball with Wilma travelling 120,000 k s around this country. So what to replace her with? I mean I could put the money on the house payment but where s the fun in that. Besides the Beemer has gotten used to a stablemate and might get lonely. Andsomething elsewas calling me. I had a short list of ,V-Twin, semi upright position, loads of tourque, character, noise and cred. I rode a Buell Lightening Long and was very impressed. It surprised me how well it went and handled. The riding position was good for me and I did nt feel overly cramped. I rated it pretty highly. But, I was booked in to ride a Ducati Hypermotard last Friday, so I did. This was the maddest thing I could imagine on two wheels. In fact I can only describe it verbally and do so in this podcast. On the same day I also rode the Ducati Monster S4R and if I describe the Hypermotard as absolutely insane this has gotta be described as insanity in a suit. VERSUS Suffice to say when I got back from both rides I described each one to the Sales guy Sam. I said the Hypermotard was like riding a wild boar in the bush, never quite in control and almost allowed to be on board rather than the boss, and the Monster was like riding a circus Tiger, you think you ve got it all under control, until one snap and your back in the jungle at the beasts mercy. If none of this makes any sense to you? Better listen in as I describe it better, I think? Not a technical review, with no horsepower figures quoted but plenty of seat of the pants feedback. Audio Ear Plug Impressions After Another 3,500k Trip. I used the Earmold Audio Ear Plugs on my recent Phillip Island Grand Prix trip and combined them with the music and audio output from my Garmin Zumo 550 GPS Navigator. So what did I find on this trip? I reckon I ve worked it out. In fact after compiling this podcast I bumped into a guy at the adelaide BMW Dealer and found he had been using them for a while and was pretty happy. If you have been following the comments from the previous Earmold podcast it will probably come as no surprise he rides without a windshield and uses a full face helmet in non turbulent air. I had mixed experiences this trip and experimented a fair bit to try and get a satisfactory run from the audio ear plug system. Listen in to this podcast if your interested in these ear plugs because I think I ve found the answer to top performance from this system. Leave your comments by clicking the comment link below. Motorcycle Luggage Straps, Bags, Thermals, Shoulder Bags, Luggage and More. Motorcycle thermals made by a motorcyclist! You d reckon they would work? I interview Andy White of Andy Strapz fame and get quite a look athis motorycling world. Every product in Andy s catalogue (a lot) has been born of a motorcycling need or borrowed from another country to benefit motorcyclists here in Oz. Andy started making luggage tie downs called Andy Strapz because he hated occy straps and with good cause. As a nurse Andy had seen one too many eye injury from these cantankerous little suckers and thought there had to be a better way. Once his mates saw how good they were, they wanted them too, just like every mate. And so his business was born. I even bought a pair of these first run straps while travelling through Geelong about 8 years ago and had a great run with them. Andy needed saddlebags so invented his own!His Expedition Panniers have had rave reviews and have a lot of cool features we discuss in this podcast. Thermal Underwear was a pain in the but for motorcyclists so Andy designed his own! The sort of stuff he would want to wear on a bike, and it seems plenty of others do too. I love the AABagz and wish I hadn t spent over $200 on the BMW rear bag recently. Yes, the beemer bag is good but this one from Andy would have suited my needs better. I just didn t know it existed at the time. Irecently bought a set of Rain Off Overgloves from him at the Phillip Island Grand Prix Expo and we discuss these in length and answer all the questions you might ask if you wanted to buy some. In fact we talk about a lot of his gear all made in his own factory in Melbourne making definetely Made In Australia. He also backs everything with a no hassles satisfaction guarantee. I m sure you ll enjoy this interview with Andy. I know I enjoyed the chat. Over the last 8 years I have bought two sets of piggyback straps and a set of Rain Off Overgloves from Andy and paid full price so I give you my no bull spent money and tried it opinion You can check out his Andy Strapz price list here If you d like to browse his site click here: Andy Strapz Web Site If you use Andy s stuff tell us what you think! Ever Wanted A Signed Photo From Casey Stoner After His FIRST Grand Prix Win? If it was a limited copy of only 100 wouldn t that be nice. Well, you know there was a limited release of a collectable photoof Casey Stoner done, and it s sold out. But this is what it looks like. I wonder if the price has gone up now he is the world champion? This photo was taken at Casey s first GP win at Quatar this year (2007). Looks cool! But check out what else I was able to get my hands on. This is one of the authentication photo s taken whenCasey was signing the photo above. Cool stuff eh? I was introduced to the world of Motorcycle Collectables at this years Phillip Island Grand Prix when I strolled into the stall from Autographed Collectables and met Miguel Ramos the Director of the company. I was mightily impressed by the quality of the framed collectables, photo s, knee sliders, articles of clothing andeven the odd boxed/framed helmet. All of them autographed and authenticated as originals. There wasn t too much there I wouldn t like hanging on my walls or taking pride of place in my party/bar room if I had one. Because of the quality of framing eachpiecehad a real physical presence, it was nt like a plain poster. It stood out and commanded attention. I can see now why people get hooked on this stuff. If you think about it, having apiece of authenticated memorabilia like this gives you some sort of physical connection with your sporting hero. They actually touched it and spent a small part of their life concentrating on making it look good. Interviewing Miguel was an eye opener into the world of the collector and also explained to me how to make sure what ever I collected had the best chance of being real and not getting ripped off. Garmin Zumo 550 Fist Impressions After 3,500+ k’s

Motorcycling With The Garmin Zumo 550 GPSCan be Fun and AAAAARRRRGGGGGHHHHH! Man o man I felt like Dr. Jekhl and Mr. Hyde using this little puppy. One minute I was laughing in my helmet, overjoyed to be having so much motorcycling fun. The next I was pulled over and trying to re program the succker swearing like a trooper. It s areal love/hate relationship for me at the moment. First you need to understand there will be BIG learing curve with this toy. It s not that it s super difficult to get going it s just that the information it gives you is based on the SETTINGS and depending what you set depends on the info you will get out. And to me it seems the only way to understand all these permutations is experience and time. And to an impatient bastard like me, ugh! Sounds simple, just set it up right! But what is the right setting for your expectations???? You see even the basic routesettings of fastest, straightest or dirt will have you in three drastically different predicaments. And there are a ton of settings like this which impact on the readout. As a GS rider I love a bit of dirt thrown in which the straightest setting will show you. As Harley riders my mates only want the fastet route which will keep them on the tar. And forget the off road setting. The garmin is just not an off road tool in my books. It s simply not an exact science yet with instructions to turn sometimes well before the corner or well after making strange towns a hazard at times. If all you want is to type in an address and don t care how it takes you there, then you ll be happy right now. If like me, you want it to use to program country roads and routes you ve never tackled before, because trying to read your map at every new turn would drive you mad. Then sometimes it works and does that. When it does it is like a heaven sent guiding hand and increases the enjoyment level immensely. R1200GS Handlebar Risers

Touratech 01-040-0274-0 handlebar risers for the BMW R1200GS I bought these little suckers just before my ride to the Phillip Island Grand Prix. I had always felt a bit stretched to the bars. I am 179 cms and also use the Airhawk Seat Cushionwhich sits me up another cm or so. The seat adjustment I use is high on the front and low on the rear and this seems to keep the seat nice and level without wanting to crush your nuts on the tank by sliding you forward as the other settings are want to do. The risers make it way easier to manage the bike standing up and is much more comfortable when riding that way. Also my arms are much more relaxed and found the bike was easier to ride smoother and quicker. I explain all in the podcast. Have a listen and leave a comment by hitting the comment link below. Phillip Island Grand Prix: Are The V.I.P Tickets Worth It?
from MotorCycle Mania on October 23, 2007

Well I m back from the GP and what a hoot. Yes, I did go in style this year booking a V.I.P. Package, so let me answer your question: Was it worth it? I ll base my comments on having experienced the General Admission thing with the Super Bikes. Same deal just a smaller crowd. Firstly, there are a number of V.I.P. Packages available with names like Full Throttle, Champions club, High Octane Club, and of course Silver, Glod and Platinum Pit Roof facilities. And they are all different! I paid $770.00 for the Full Throttle Club and had a ball, let me share someof the meals we enjoyed. Try morning tea of thin and crispy wood fired pizzas of shaved ham, mozzarella, and baby spinach. Or a lunch of spinach and cheesetortellini in a creamy mushroom and herb sauce accompanied by bowls of freshly grated parmesan cheese. And sweets of double mud cake topped with a varhola ganache (I don t know what that is either, but it tasted nice) and served with King Island double cream? And I gotta say there were three offerings for most courses so what I described only touches the surface. Sounds like a food fair! I know I was there for racing but a man s gotta eat. And when I got thirsty? The choice was bottled white, red and bubbly wines (nice ones too). Crown Lager, Carlton Draught, Cascade Premium Light beers, 7 different soft drinks and tea and coffer aplenty. Waiting staff were prolific and friendly and there was never a shortage of ANYTHING. In this podcast I cover the tent layout, outside viewing area, food, drinks, ease of getting around and one thing I forgot to mention our own exclusive and private toilets for the club. (big point). Also I ask some Grand Prix veterans who have experienced ALL the V.I.P. Clubs and which one they think is best. This shot shows the V.I.P. tent pretty empty. Here s me and my mate Garry at thereserved table. Even with plenty of people there was always plenty of room. This is turn 12 and the view from the tent. They screw around this corner at 200kph! The superscreen out the front of the tent. They are hitting over 200 kph by now. You can see the High Octane Club tent in the background and Lukey Heights above them. Here s a example of the crowd (not during the main race, it was more jam packed) in the general admission next to us. This is our outside viewing area to contrast with the photo above. And we get drink service wait staff in here! And our own toilets at the back of the tent! YES, the toilets are a big deal, trust me! Don t Buy Any Motorcycle GPS Navigator, Until You Hear This! In this podcast Andy interviews Tony Kirby from Touratech Australia and renowned Two Wheels Journaliston recent articles he has written about motorcycle GPS units. I ask Tony the hard questions like which is the BEST one! And what GPS Accessories do I need? What are the must have features? I also explain to Tony how I want to use a GPS and will it do what I want?
