ROCKOLLECTIONS: FOR THE 4TH OF JULY- JAY & THE AMERICANS PT.2 END
from WLSO.FM on July 03, 2008
15 views / likes
I will open this chapter with Only In America, having already told you the story behind it. Last year I think it was, I did a 4-part Podcast theme series called A Celebration Of America- and it is here at WLSO.FM. At the end of Part 4, I played that same song but by the Drifters, only because I wanted to play a different interpretation. Not knowing at the time that THEY had done the first and original version! So if you want to hear that piece of history, as I say, it is here. You just have to go back and look for it. After that great song for this holiday, Jay Black at his operatic best with a song by Rodgers s first success as a songwriter? They did a song he wrote called Sunday And Me, and I ve got and will play it, you ll hear if you listen, lol. The band s last hit reached # 19 in 1970, and was an old Ronettes tune. After that, I have a strange one, a curiosity they released in late 1966- an odd, very 60 s sound not at all like what we were used to hearing from them. Even the title is kinda weird, He s Raining In My Sunshine. Far out, man! Turns out Jay Black had a big gambling problem with some big debts, and he sold the group name to pay them off. Of note is that over the years the group included Walter Becker and Donald Fagen, who left to form Steely Dan. Then, I have a couple of treats. One member of the Americans, Kenny Vance, started a group with the Planetones that in 1975 came out of nowhere with their doowop retro style, for an unlikely hit in the midst of what was by then a no longer experimental but a formulaic music scene. Their throwback sound broke the formula, and I just remember it seeming so out of place. But I liked it then and I like it now. As a born and bred New Yorker, I knew about singing in the subways and the bathrooms and Looking For That Echo! I will end this Independence Day show with a song I have played quite a few times before on the radio. I will never understand why this beautiful, wonderful song, done years ago by Eric Andersen, never became a perennial hit. Happy 4th Of July everyone, everywhere! And Happy Birthday America! Mike

ROCKOLLECTIONS: FOR THE 4TH OF JULY- JAY AND THE AMERICANS PT.1

For the 4th Of July, I wanted something American. Then it occurred to me- Jay t know whether more than Herman s Hermits or not. After this, she will never have a reason to listen again- certainly not for ME, lol! At the start there was Jay Traynor, and he was replaced by Jay Black. Black had that at times operatic voice, as did Roy Orbison. I ll have the very interesting story of Only In America, ORIGINALLY recorded by the Drifters but given to Jay s radio. Including one in particular, called Think Of The Good Times that had Engineer Ken and I look at each other and smile in recognition, an excellent old forgotten song that revealed nothing by its title, but when it started to play it was instantly recognizable. There are extra studio bits of intro on some of the songs, that being a trend today. Oh, and listen closely for that squeaking door at the beginning of one of the songs! I was feeling very goofy during this show, and that will continue in Part Two- as well as some surprises. I will now get to work to ensure the next half is up in time for the 4th. Mike

ROCKOLLECTIONS: THE STRAITS OF DIRE PT.2 END

Continuing on with Dire Straits, their next album was Love Over Gold. The title was taken from some graffitti they saw! It was their first # 1 album in the UK. After a song from that album, I wanna play a good old piece of Rock s in England. Brothers In Arms was their next album, a huge hit. And the title track was the world s 1st CD single! In fact, the album was one of the first CD s around to choose from. I ll take this one home with an appropriate song. Listening to the playback, I notice my voice going louder and lower- that s what happens with a clogged ear. You can t tell your own volume, lol! Have fun! Mike

This is a live show I did the other day. My brain melting with the 3 H s- hazy, hot and humid. Plus my left ear was clogged so I could hear almost nothing (unclogged the next day at a doctor s office). And, trooper that I am, you would never have suspected! Now that I have bored the crap out of you about my physical state that day, here is the 1st part of the show, featuring Dire Straits. I ll have the biography of the band, with a great story about their unassuming demeanor. The band owes a great debt to a woman at Warner Bros. A s beautiful and inventive guitar playing would have inevitably been discovered by someone! We ll start at the beginning, and hear a terrific band grow into more complex arrangements. Good Music! Mike

Monday, Monday becomes Mindy, Monday today as Uncleshag and the Longtown Sound turn the play list over to Mindy, MySpace friend and active supporter of the artists she digs. Her words are Uncleshag s guide as we dig the great tunage Mindy recommends. Thanks Mindy, you are one great rockin gal! From Mindy s notes- Thomas Lee Big surprise that he is on my top six and I only need one word to describe him. Talented. This man can do anything but when it comes to music he is a force. Rest My Bones is off his album Atomic Bar which is one of my top five albums, where every song becomes your favorite. I could have picked any of the songs off this album but I chose this track because it simply rocks. Stephen Cochran Is an extremely talented and humble artist that draws everyone around him in like family and when it is time to perform he doesn t disappoint. Thinkin I m Drinkin is going to be released as his third single off his self titled CD and it is the definition of a fun party song it will have you up out of your seats for sure. Bo Bice Is without question one of the most talented musicians and performers I have ever seen live. There isn t much more that I need to add to that statement other than if you like live music check this guy out. Whiskey, Women is by far my favorite song of his live set and at every show it becomes a crowd favorite. It is the perfect way to end the night, on your feet dancing. Gary Nichols Is an amazing guitarist with the vocals to back it up. He has the charm of a true southern gentleman but when he gets on stage he is all business and you will be a fan from the first note. Going Fast is one of many great songs to choose from but it has become one of my favorite traveling songs to listen to on the road because it will pump you up with energy. Josh Ritter Is just a wonderfully talented performer and songwriter who knows how to tell a story with his music. His lyrics are very honest and he comes across with great humility and respect. Girl in the War is my favorite Ritter song. It is moving and beautifully written and if you haven t heard it do yourself a favor and listen. Patrick Mitchell The first time I heard him sing I said WHO IS THAT? That is how incredible this mans voice is. Very unique, very soulful, and truly powerful. I Think I Will is one of several new recordings that Patrick has available for download and it is one of my favorites based solely on the emotion that pours out of him as he performs it. Mindy, thanks again! -unc. Today s Featured Artists- Thomas Lee - Rest My Bones Stephen Cochran - Thinkin I m Drinkin Bo Bice - Whiskey Women d Be Today

ROCKOLLECTIONS: ‘ERMAN’S ‘ERMITS PT.2 END
from WLSO.FM on June 21, 2008

Like all the British bands, Herman s Hermits were no exception when it came to doing good old American Rock s. The next one I call the CPR song. After that they had a big hit over here with a tune that was written and originally done by my man Ray Davies, with the Kinks. I ll be telling you how they happened to get the name Herman (in this case, something misheard). Another Yank song by them, this one originally done by the great Sam Cooke. Peter Noone left the group in 1971, and since has appeared on numerous sitcoms and dramas- and we ll even throw in a mid 70 s hit he had solo. Then I will go out with a flurry of songs to make your memory bank dizzy and will shave decades off your chronological age. And ala Ed Sullivan, I will make you wait till the end to hear my favorite Herman s Hermits song- and the first one we ever heard here in this country back in 1964. All in all, a nice way to spend the first day of Summer on a Saturday afternoon! Mike
