PrivateLessons.com Soundbites: Composer Benjamin Boyle
Hi Mr Boyle. I was your craps dealer at the Borgata Monday night, Nov 19.
I had no idea you were THIS accomplished.
Compose something I can play on guitar!
(I wrote you also at blip.tv, I think it was.)
I've always preferrred my music more tonally centered, melodic, sweeter and more pleasant, rather than all that atonal stuff. I've always felt the former was harder to compose because it'd all been done before, so hard to find something new. So everyone wrote atonal, which was hard to tell if it was good or not cause it all sounded sorta bad!
I remember being a student at Penn State and seeing a recital of pieces composed by students/faculty. Most were atonal (this was the late 1970s.) Then a string quartet played this one guy's piece, Rob Passow, I still remember his name, but have no idea what he went on to do. It was traditional, tonal centered, and was the hit of the concert.
After trying so hard to wrap their minds around the atonal stuff, this came at them, and it sounded great.
I play songs by Adrian Legg, Tommy Emmanuel, Andres Segovia (songs Segovia played, not composed, of course), Steve Howe, others, all on an Ovation steel-string acoustic/electric.
So when you get a spare moment (ha ha), compose something I can play on solo guitar!
