N93: Rescueing a Stingray from alexwrege's show on May 09, 2007 357 views
Sonja's dad was fishing today and a stingray decided to bite the hook. Since this kind of fish was not supposed to be on the menu, Sonja's dad asked me to help him remove the hook so that the fish could be released again. Stingrays, obviously, sting and therefore this turned into somewhat of a major operation. In any case, the fish was saved and swam off. I HATE fishing.

Sonja, her dad, and I were fishing next to our house today. The leftover fish turned out to be great at attracting several pelicans.

And this is why I became a conscientious objector from alexwrege's show on April 14, 2007 357 views
I'm browsing my morning (in this case mid-afternoon) web routine and came upon a disturbing article by the Associated Press on the conduct and training in the German military (scroll down for the article). After completing high school in Germany, I - like all German males - was faced with mandatory military service. Back then, it was either a 10-month enlistment in the military or a 13-month engagement in the alternative military service for conscientious objectors. After going through paperwork and an approval process, I was granted conscientious objector status. Here's what Wikipedia says: According to Article 12a of the German constitution (Grundgesetz), every adult male is obligated to military service called Wehrdienst. The draftee can apply for an alternative service called Zivildienst (civilian service), if he declares conscience reasons. The civil service may not last longer than military service. This rule has been applied since October 1, 2004. Before that date the civilian service was longer than military service, because soldiers could later be called to military exercises (Wehr?bungen). In wartime, civilian draftees are expected to replace those on active military duty in their civilian professions. The scandal played out in the north German town of Rendsburg which is about 25 minutes away from where I used to live. You can find a map at the bottom of the page, I'm from Kiel. And here's the Associated Press' arcticle: BERLIN, Germany (AP) -- A video showing a German army instructor telling one of his soldiers to envision African-Americans in the Bronx while firing his machine gun was broadcast Saturday on national television. The video, coming after scandals involving photos of German soldiers posing with skulls in Afghanistan and the abuse of recruits by instructors, seemed likely to raise more questions about training practices in Germany's conscript army. "We can no longer talk about an isolated case," said Lt. Juergen Rose of the Darmstaedter Signal, a group of current and former army officers and sergeants who independently review military procedures. "Things like this don't happen in the army on an everyday basis, but unfortunately in recent years there have been a number of comparable incidents." The Defense Ministry said the video was shot in July 2006 at barracks in the northern town of Rendsburg and that the army has been aware of it since January. "We are currently investigating the incident," said Florian Naggies, a spokesman for the army and Defense Ministry. He did not identify the instructor or the soldier, who are shown in camouflage uniforms in a forest. The instructor tells the soldier, "You are in the Bronx. A black van is stopping in front of you. Three African-Americans are getting out and they are insulting your mother in the worst ways ... Act." The soldier fires his machine gun several times and yells an obscenity several times in English. The instructor then tells the soldier to curse even louder. The existence of the video was first reported on the home page of the German news magazine Stern on Friday and excerpts of the video were aired on the news television channel n-tv on Saturday. According to Stern, the 90-second video had been posted on a Web site used by soldiers to exchange private videos. A soldier who used the site alerted his superiors, the magazine reported. The video is the latest embarrassment for the German army. Eighteen army instructors are currently on trial for allegedly abusing and humiliating 163 recruits in 2004. Last year, newspapers published photos of German soldiers in Afghanistan posing with a skulls -- including one who exposed himself while holding a skull.

The Sustain MiniHome - simply awesome from alexwrege's show on March 25, 2007 1,233 views
The Minihome has been one of those inspirational pieces of sustainable architecture. I really love everything about this design. Unfortunately, some of the sustainable ideas are also a bit costly, so consequently this design is a bit out of my range. But it is cool nonetheless. You should definitely check out the website. It is well worth a visit.

N93 vs. N93i - Photo and Video comparison from alexwrege's show on February 21, 2007 2,871 views
This is the third part of my review series of the new Nokia N93i. This time around I was really mostly interested in comparing the photo and video quality of the two devices. Today is somewhat photo-heave, tomorrow I'll have more video comparisons. All right, here are the comparison shots. All images were shot with the factory firmware. I have not made any color correction or used any kind of image editing software. Portrait images were rotated to that format in Flickr, not on the computer. What do you think? Which camera takes the better pictures? Leave your opinion in the comment section! Snow storm in Toledo from alexwrege's show on February 18, 2007 390 views
Last week saw a snow storm here in wonderful Toledo, Ohio. Things got bad pretty quickly and a Level 3 snow emergency was announced. This means that no driving is allowed. Since I consider myself 'essential personnel' at the university, I drove anyway.

Awesome music video shot with the Nokia N93 from alexwrege's show on February 13, 2007 390 views
All right, please don't think I am completely crazy. Mario, a friend of mine from Germany who also lives here in the US, decided to surprise his mom and dad with a home-made music video modelled after Germany's former child star Heintje from the 1960s. Mario and I spent an afternoon freezing, but at the same time we were cracking up and this 2-minute video needed about 3 hours of shooting. Not because of the camera work but more because of both of us bursting into laughter every ten seconds. While this video is undoubtedly stupid, it also shows you some of the possibilities of the Nokia N93. I had the music file (in mp3 format) on the camera and turned off the audio recording in the video function on the N93. This then allowed me to play the music through the built-in speaker for Mario to get his cue. So, if you're planning on making a music video, know that the N93 contains everything necessary to do just that. We only had one problem: Mario constantly forgot his lines. Sucker. PS: Check out the original music video from the 60s down below.

Caught in the storm from alexwrege's show on December 25, 2006 195 views
The weather forecast already told us yesterday that we might be in some trouble today. The day started off pretty normal, at around 2 pm though, heavy storms and thunderstorms as well as pretty strong rain started hammering down on our tent. There were tornado warnings out and we had the best shelter of all: a tent that my dad and I got 3 years ago when he was visiting me from Germany. Well, the tent held up well, we survived and the Fort Myers Beach area seemed to have been ok, unlike further up north. Luckily my N93 came along for the ride, so I get to show you these (somewhat uneventful) images.

Amazing Crash at UT from alexwrege's show on November 27, 2006 1,440 views
This is the reason why I love my Nokia N93 - you can take high quality video any time. I was on my way to work today, when a van crashed into two cars that were parked and landed on TOP of them. While I was filming the news organizations came with their vans. This is quite ridiculous, but probably the biggest news of the day for Toledo. I thought I would prepare this video in a similar fashion. Thanks goes to resident reporter-ette Sarah Moomey and Kristin whose car was actually totalled.

These Hooters girls look weird from alexwrege's show on November 20, 2006 435 views
I went to Hooters last night with my friends. Normally I would boycott Hooters because it objectfies women, but a feminists friend of mine said that she thinks that working at Hooters can also be empowering for women because they have total control over the situation. Ah, well. I still don't know. Especially after I saw these two at Hooters (wait for the last 10 seconds).
