PhotoStory: Installing an Electric Grill on the Boat
from A Gypsy's Kiss on September 08, 2005

I like to cook, and while I don’t fancy myself a chef of haute cuisine, I’m pretty comfortable in the kitchen, and have a reputation for delivering simple, fully flavored, multi-course meals. I’ve spent the last three years mastering my selection, preparation, seasoning, marinating , grilling, sautéing, braising, and roasting techniques. I can make magic with puff pastry and engineer deserts that will make you cry with as few as three (puff pastry, a peach, vanilla ice cream) or four (butter, brown sugar, amaretto, banana) ingredients Cooking dinner for a friend of the female persuasion, while chatting and sharing a glass of wine is (to me, at least) one of the most romantic ways to spend an evening. (Including a dessert course of something rich and chocolaty, and a recently released DVD watched with the lights down low, slumped on a comfortable couch). While dinner on a boat never seemed to have the same level of romanticism, I believed it had the potential to be. Unfortunately, the boats I have owned prior to this particular one were not equipped in one way or the other to pull off the romantic dinner evening with aplomb. And, much to my chagrin, even this most recent acquisition was missing something. Most boats in this size range are equipped with stoves, but not ovens. I have seen several variations of cooktop, including pressurized and non-pressurized alcohol, propane, bottled butane, and electric. AGK came with a Kenyon pressurized alcohol stove (which, honestly, I didn't trust). Most captains who plan on serving meals aboard also install one of the several alternatives of stainless steel grills, mounted externally on the cockpit railing and heated via charcoal or bottled propane (Or are those small bottles of butane?). Magna and Force 10 products come to mind, and West Marine has recently re-badged one of them into it's own branded product line. But, generally speaking, the larger the boat, the more capable the galley it contains. Since I think of myself as a man of simple tastes, I wanted to find a simple solution to my dinner-aboard problem. Coincidentally, one Friday evening while flipping through the cable channels looking for the encore showing of the previous week's Over There (FX is the cat's pajamas), I clicked into the Home Shopping Network. The show was being hosted by Wolfgang Puck of Spago fame, and he was demonstrating several products with his branding on them. The one that caught my eye was the Bistro Dual Sided Electric Grill. It had several features I liked, especially the one that allows you to stick the messy grill in the dishwasher to clean it. Since it was electric, I could use it on the boat when I was connected to shore power. Besides, they were on sale for $69, plus $14 in shipping. (Two burner non-pressurized alchohol marine stoves start at around $350, before installation, and go up from there). I ordered two of them. One for the boat, and one for the house. As you can see by the series of included pictures, I removed the gimbled Kenyon pressurized alcohol stove and inserted in lieu thereof the Wolfgang Puck grill now solidly mounted on a piece of varnished marine plywood. I had the opportunity to try it over the weekend, grilling a steak and some vegtables without any difficulty at all. The aroma of the cooking marinade, grilling onions, and garlic powdered tomatoes attracted some inquisitive boat-mates as it wafted over the marina. It was easy to clean with a quick spray of dishwashing liquid and a hose down. The following morning, I flipped the grill top over and boiled some water in a pot to make coffee, along with some pancakes and turkey bacon. The water was perfectly boiled in about five minutes. The pancakes were light and tasty. I made soup, the same way, for lunch. All done without the paranoia associated with the evil hissing of the pressurized alcohol stove. (It will be relegated to an eBay auction sometime this week.) My only regret came when I tried to make some Jiffy Pop. It didn't get hot enough to steam open more than a handful of kernels. Now all I need is a willing dinner date who doesn't like popcorn with her movies. (Right. I forgot to mention the flat-LCD, bulkhead mounted DVD player.) vlog vlogging video quicktime wmv mov mpeg sailing stove kenyon pressurized alchohol wolfgang puck bistro grill cooking grilling PLEASE NOTE: There are a few moments worth of buffering before the video starts. Publishing Video on the Internet: How to Play Movies in TypePad
from A Gypsy's Kiss on August 27, 2005
504 views / likes
I get a couple of emails a week from people asking how hard it is to play movies in TypePad. Answer: It's not very hard at all, once you've shot the movie, edited it down to a reasonable length, compressed it so it serves at under 600 kilobits per second, uploaded it to a server, and made a note of what you called it. Correct answer: It can be a lot of work until you've done it often enough that you have a process in place to help you. I can't write everything in a single post you need to know about publishing video on the web, but I'd like to help with what I thought was the hardest part: coding the HTML. I'm going to share the HTML I use to play movies in my TypePad posts. First, there are some caveats. The code that I present here assumes the following: That you've shot, edited, and compressed a movie into .wmv format so it plays at about 600 kilobits per second in Windows Explorer, and the movie is 300 pixels high and 400 pixels wide. It also assumes you've uploaded the movie to a server, a necessary step, since it won't play for someone else while it's on your computer. You can use the FILES tab in the CONTROL PANEL tab of TypePad to upload your finished .wmv movie into your TypePad account. The code I use follows. You can copy and paste it, and change it to suit your needs. Remember to paste the code into the EDIT HTML window of your TypePad NEW POST. Copy everything from the first p to the last /p . I've colored the code to explain some of the HTML features I use. My explanation follows the code. The code is real in the sense that it is exactly the code I used to play the movie on Lance Armstrong posted just before this one. OK. Ready? Here's the code: p span style= color: #ffffff; vlog vlogging video quicktime wmv mov mpeg lance armstrong blood doping urine testing tour de france l'equipe cycling /span /p p span style= color: #660099; strong PLEASE NOTE: There are a few moments worth of buffering before the video starts. /strong /span /p p /p p center object id= WinMedia type= video/x-ms-wmv height= 346 width= 400 param value= http://www.62ndmarketing.com/AGKVideo/AGK20050827.wmv name= FileName / param value= 0 name= AutoStart / param value= 1 name= ShowControls / /object /center /p p span style= color: #660099; strong To play the video, click on the START ( ) button on the control bar above. Requires Windows Media Player for the PC or Mac, and a cable, DSL, or LAN. If the video doesn’t play when you click the START button, you may need to download Windows Media Player for your computer at: /strong /span /p p center span style= color: #669900; strong a href= http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windowsmedia/download/default.asp?displang=en target= _blank Windows Media Player Download Center /a /strong /span /center /p Now for the explanation. For the code colored in red: These are meta tags. You can't see them on the post because I've colored the text white to match the AGK background. These are important for search engines to find since they don't know what your saying in your video. In order to do the same thing on your post, you'll have to match your background color and insert the six letter/number code where I have ffffff' which is the HTML code for white. 000000 is black. In my posts you'll also see 660099 which is the purple that matches the AGK color scheme. You can find your background color by selecting your TypePad DESIGN tab and clicking CHANGE THEME. Fore the code colored in blue: This is the code that calls the Windows Media Player object from your viewers desktop. If they don't have Windows Media Player on their computer they won't be able to play your movie. They'd have to download it first. No worries, it's free. You can't mess with too much code in this segment. You'll notice that the height of the movie is 46 pixels larger than the assumed size I told you about up above. The extra 46 pixels is to acommodate the WMP control bar that shows up at the bottom of the video. If you publish a video that's a different size, remeber to add the 46 pixels, otherwise your movie will look squished. You'll also have to change the URL of where your video is located. Mine happens to be located at another server I use (62ndmarketing). If you've uploaded your video file to your TypePad account, right click the filename, and drag down to COPY SHORTCUT. You can then paste that address into the code above. The code colored in green: This redirects the viewer to the Microsoft page to download a copy of Windows Media Player 10, in case they don't already have it installed on their computer. I hope this answers your questions. If not, feel free to email me and let me know.

The Monster Goes to College

I drove The Monster to her freshman year at college on Friday. The day began with lots of tears, but by Saturday she was another one of thousands of anxious new students trying to get a lot of things done by start of classes on Wednesday. She and her new roommate have a lot in common, so I think they'll have a great first year. I can now add the University of Tennessee to the list of institutions of higher learning attended by, and a graduated from, A Gypsy's Kids: Colorado Aerotech University of Virginia Virginia Tech University James Madison University Coastal Carolina University The Baby hasn't quite made up her mind, but she has another year to think about it. I'm hoping for in-state versus out-of-state. vlog vlogging video quicktime wmv mov mpeg the monster goes to college university of tennessee volunteers vols rocky top knoxville PLEASE NOTE: There are a few moments worth of buffering before the video starts. Test: Screen Capture and Narration

The following link is a wmv file of an extemporaneous screen capture and narration session I just completed. I wanted to test out the capability, and determine if it could used as another one of the media available to us for communicating with AGK...we are, after all, a proponent of rich media weblogs. I used a Microsoft Product called Windows Media Encoder which you can download for free. I've included the link below in case you wanted to try it yourself. (This is also the tool I use to compress my videos before presenting them to you on AGK. AGK Summer Sail 2000
from A Gypsy's Kiss on August 11, 2005

My daughter, The Princess, returning to her third year at university this coming Saturday, and she of the kindest heart, reminded me that I had made a video of the 2000 Summer Sail, also on The Chesapeake Bay. I owned a Catalina 22 at the time, a wonderful, and very inexpensive little vessel I had also purchased at auction on eBay. This trip was made with my eldest son, The Craftsman, when he was 29. He had never sailed before, but by the end of the week he had become very capable. Thus the final scene entitled Transformation made especially for him. Our route included stops at St. Michael's, Annapolis, Oxford, and Solomon's Island having departed and returned to Parrish Creek near Shady Side on the West River. I noticed a scene entitled Kent Island Narrows. It's a mistake. It should be Knapps Narrows. I was still shooting film rather than digital at the time, so the images are in black and white. I also noticed there were far more scenics included than in the trip I made with my daughters. I wonder why? I also realized it was my first use of the 98 Degrees version of the song Sailing. I hope you can tolerate it one more time. Most memorable moment: We wanted to do one night sail on the trip so we left a very calm Mears Marina in Eastport at about three in the morning. By the time we hit Thomas Point Light the seas were running about five feet in a 25 knot northeast wind. We were flying a small storm jib and my GPS had us surfing down the faces of the waves at over 8 knots. I managed to shoot one photo of Thomas Point Light as we passed. You'll see the blurry image near the end of the video. Enjoy. To play the video, click on the START ( ) button on the control bar above.
