Over the next year, the [banks] began a series of enormous contractions, forced curtailment of loans, contractions of credit The contraction of money and credit swiftly bought the United States [a] widespread economic and financial depression. MMM-118: Where Does Money Come From? from Mad Money Machine on July 04, 2008 36 views / likes
Avoid non-systematic risk. Where money comes from you will be surprised. Inflation then deflation. Lunch with Warren. Online outline tool. Stocks are on sale. I ENCOURAGE you to Download this show thru iTunes! But, if you just cannot deal with that then go ahead and Play the new show right now The Mad Money Machine is proud to be sponsored by Index Funds Advisors at ifa.com Topics in this week s show include: Mark Hebner explains William Sharpe s definitions of systematic and non-systematic risk. The difference is that the risks inherent in owning individual stocks are not rewarded to investors. Where does money come from? Simply, it is created when someone takes out a loan. It did not exist prior to that event. And when the loan is paid back, the money disappears. So, because of fractional reserve banking, when money is created, what is it that you are paying interest upon anyway? And why are the banks so sad when loans go into default? With all of the credit expansion of recent years due to low interest rates, lots and lots of money was created. More money means inflation. Inflation results in higher prices. But now that money is being destroyed through tightening credit, will we experience the effects of deflation? Lower prices. Maybe a few years down the road. Maybe stocks are being deflated currently while other things take longer to feel the effects. Lunch with Warren Buffet. Cheaper to read his annual report. Our Tool this week is LooseStitch.com an online outliner. Something I ve been seeking for years now. Would be great to merge Natara Bonsai with LooseStitch and have them sync with each other. Are you glad June is over? 10.2% loss for the DJIA. Congratulations to those of you who are still in the accumulation phase of investing! I ENCOURAGE you to Download this show thru iTunes! But, if you just cannot deal with that then go ahead and Play the new show right now The Mad Money Machine is proud to be sponsored by Index Funds Advisors at ifa.com. Topics in this week s show include: Warren Buffet s Expert Prediction is for a long, deep recession. I ve heard from at least SIX Zune listeners! Please take the MMM Survey! Warren Buffet paid 19% tax in 2006, same as the 19% tax of GDP rate, write Brandon. DOW Chemical hikes prices 20%. If we assume prices will go up, then it makes sense to buy large amounts of non-perishable products now. What should I buy? Email me. Skwiggs says Vonage is even more expensive than Skype and Magic Jack. Yeah, but they don t do existing number transfer. Diehards.org has now officially become Bogleheads.org. And gotten rid of that clunky old Morningstar forum. Our Tool this week is a backtest spreadsheet that Simba worked up over there at Bogleheads.org. You can enter your favorite allocation of Vanguard funds and it will calculate back-tested performance returns and Sharpe ratio going back as far as 1972 through the end of 2007. Use it for the fun of it. I explain the Sharpe Ratio. And also Standard Deviation. And I explain how the line from lower left to upper right on a returns vs. risk chart is the Efficient Frontier. I review the Lazy Portfolio Smackdown results thru May. Man unearths box filled with old cash. Unfortunately, they put it in a box instead of in Index Portfolio 100 because it would be worth $19,861,409 today. Show MMM-116 is something I ve been thinking about doing for over a year now. This one is going to be a keeper for you. Listen to it on your iPod or Zune or iPhone. Our Guru this week is Barton Biggs who thinks we need to be ready for breakdown of civilization. But more significantly, he cites Philip Tetlock in saying that Experts should be ignored as random blather because they are less accurate than even non-specialists as to what is going to happen. I m cutting expenses in hopes of saving for iPhone service. Prediction #8 came true. I review the new ETFs of ETFs from PowerShares. Why have an advisor when you could do it yourself and save paying their fee? Because: An advisor can evaluate and re-evaluate your risk capacity and make sure you are invested properly. An advisor can perform tax-loss harvesting. An advisor can make cash flow decisions when you put more money in the account and take money out of the account. IFA has sophisticated reporting of your performance which takes into account cash flow. IFA is a safe haven for regulatory compliance; they are looking out for YOUR best financial interest not trying to maximize some sales commission. MMM-103: Plunge Protection Team from Mad Money Machine on March 21, 2008 144 views / likes
Did the Plunge Protection Team save the markets this week? Our Guru says active investors spend $100 Billion per year trying to beat the market. Our Tool measures the implosion. Cramer s recommendation on BS. I ENCOURAGE you to Download this show thru iTunes! But, if you just cannot deal with that then go ahead and Play the new show right now The Mad Money Machine is proud to be sponsored by Index Funds Advisors at ifa.com. Topics in this week s show include: How are you doing? What a wild market. I think this one has more uncertainty in it than the dot com crash. Perhaps not paying attention to the market is the best idea? These are indeed interesting times. I detail my active trading failures. EconTalk was great this week. Catch the interview with Tyler Cowen about the Fed and the gold standard. Good stuff. Russ needs to read up about why gold makes good money though. Christopher says to say hey to Rikard in Japan. If the market prices in all that is known about the markets, why does it keep going down? I don t think Jim Cramer was saying stay in Bear Stearns stock, I think he meant to keep your account there if you had one. Nonetheless, people are up in arms. And don t forget to visit the Cramer Crap auction. Ron Paul asks John McCain about the Plunge Protection Team. John sounds like Miss Teen SC. Read the article about the PPT in the WaPo. Here s someone saying the PPT bought stocks last Tuesday. Here s an article refuting the PPT as an urban myth. MMM-102: Whip Inflation Now from Mad Money Machine on March 14, 2008 156 views / likes
Inflation or DEflation? Shutting down the FED. Where to invest now. Guru says go for the gold. Tool helps calculate worth of money. Gold inches toward sextillion. I ENCOURAGE you to Download this show thru iTunes! But, if you just cannot deal with that then go ahead and Play the new show right now The Mad Money Machine is proud to be sponsored by Index Funds Advisors at ifa.com. Topics in this week s show include: Is it time to Whip Inflation Now? I actually remember having one of these buttons. I didn t know at the time, nay, I didn t learn until about 30 years later, that inflation was caused by the government creating more money and not buy greedy businesses, as was told to us all along. Are we headed for inflation? OR Deflation? OR BOTH AT THE SAME TIME? According to the Resource Investor podcast, gold does good during both inflation and deflation. Jim Rogers says if he were Fed chairman, he would shut it down and then resign. I wish I would have listened to him and bought commodities. So, where do we invest now? One thing is for certain, picking individual stocks won t beat the market. Instead, buy the WHOLE market using low-cost index funds. Our Guru said that a gold standard is the only way to protect us against the welfare statists. Congress is taking up HR 5512 to try to modernize our coins. They instead should just eliminate them. Our Tool helps you calculate how much your cash is worth today. Stock pickers don t use the proper benchmark. They compare themselves to cash instead of to a portfolio of index funds. And even then, they don t calculate the risks they are taking. Relax and listen to some music. Gold goes over $1000. Warren Buffet says our country is experiencing widespread pain. He also admits a mistake in his investments. But, he says America will still prosper. How can someone who becomes a state governor be such a fool? Isn t there any good politician? Jim Rogers: Abolish the Fed from Mad Money Machine on March 13, 2008 213 views / likes
Here now for a self-fulfilling prediction: I said you d be seeing more of Jim Rogers in 2008 as commodities and China take the headlines. Here now is Jim on CNBC the other day in an interesting (sometimes funny!) interview in which he says the Fed is doing a poor job, throwing gas on a raging fire. The other central banks around the world are doing much better. At least they *acknowledge* there is inflation. If you want to take his advice and buy agriculture and currencies, you may want to do some homework on DBA, FXY, FXF, and FXA. Possibly DBC as well. Oh, and SKF!

But, if you just cannot deal with that then go ahead and Play the new show right now The Mad Money Machine is proud to be sponsored by Index Funds Advisors at ifa.com. Topics in this week s show include: Family project: A trip to China? Waiting to buy an iPhone. John Davidson says change in China is in the form of small bills. Two top board games are Puerto Rico and Power Grid. Evander says I need to check my web site from some other computer just to see what others are seeing. What are you seeing? I review the Lazy Portfolio Smackdown results so far. See that star at the top left of the image? That would have a high Sharpe Ratio. I explain The Perfect Portfolio that I have found. It is the Mr. Sharpe portfolio. I m buying VGPMX, VGENX, FXA, GLD, SLV, and even some SKF (which I didn t mention on the show). Our Guru this week is Bill Bonner of the Daily Reckoning site and co-author of Empire of Debt: The Rise of an Epic Financial Crisis. Written 2.5 years ago, it is proving to be a pretty accurate prophesy. The government taxes us twice with inflation. By printing money (causing rising prices) and by capital gains taxes on those risen prices. Warren Buffet said, You can t say that the trouble we ve experienced and the trouble we re likely to experience won t lead to something pretty severe. The Rich Dad guy and his guest Mike Malone say gold might go to a sextillion dollars per ounce (at the 12:45 minute mark). Who can you believe? Step 2: The Nobel Laureates. Change: Yahoo s TechTicker will feature Henry Blodget Change: HD-DVD vs. Blu-Ray Charge: Some banks charge $3 ATM fees? Eric Clapton - Change the World Do you agree with me that these would be great CHANGES: eliminate taxes on dividends, savings, capital gains, social security benefits, tips and repeal the death tax Freeze non-defense, non-entitlement spending at current levels televise Federal Reserve meetings legalize competing currencies repeal Sarbanes/Oxley Change: Income tax is only 12% of Federal budget. Eliminate it! All of the candidates are saying they want change. What most of them mean is they want the change from our pockets. Charge: Paul s economic advisor to the campaign was last show s guru. I m hoping that Ron finds someone named Boyer to run as his veep. Then all the signs would say PAUL-BOYER 2008. Heck, I d even settle for a Douglas. Recessions: Lazy Portfolio Guy isn t so lazy when it comes to saying SELL IFA Feature: Recessions Out of the last 50 years or 600 months, October 1987 was the worst one month decline in Index Portfolios 15 to 100. But, if you just cannot deal with that then go ahead and Play the new show right now The Mad Money Machine is proud to be sponsored by Index Funds Advisors at ifa.com. Topics in this week s show include: How s the bear market treating you? Are you taking on too much risk? Do you know the total return of Index Portfolio 60 from 1 Jan 2000 through 31 Dec 2007? Check it out for yourself at IFA.com s benchmark your portfolio tool. Or if you re lazy like me, the answer it 93%. It would take a pretty severe bear market to wipe that out, wouldn t it? What s the deal with my mailman putting the delivery in our garage? Hey, how about ringing the doorbell or something next time? Our Guru thinks the CPI measure of inflation is bogus. He says the Federal Reserve is unconstitutional. He says save old pennies and all nickels. He says buy gold, international stocks, and keep some cash for buying up bargains. Not dissimilar to what we ve been saying here. But he says don t buy mutual funds. Perhaps he doesn t know the magic of index funds and ETFs. His weekly show can be found here. I try again to answer Jim s question about whether this would be a good time to invest in Indexfolio 100 and how to get increased risk levels. Thanks for your ideas for replacing my FiOS phone service with something cheaper, namely VOIP. Do you get the feeling that this is a time of Great Awakening? I encourage you to buy a box of clementines. A wonderful way to get your 5-a-day fruit and veg servings. I m using our Tool right now to write this posting. MMM-095: Being Clairvoyant from Mad Money Machine on January 18, 2008 237 views / likes
Macbook Tablet? Guru knows recession is here. Jekyll Island. Outliner tool. What is the year-to-year market correlation? Passive government beats active government. Rock Band. Half Life 2. I ENCOURAGE you to Download this show thru iTunes! But, if you just can t possibly deal with that then go ahead and Play the new show right now The Mad Money Machine is proud to be sponsored by Index Funds Advisors at ifa.com. Topics in this week s show include: The Clairvoyant Society of London will not meet Tuesday due to unforeseen circumstances. - An advertisement in the Financial Times, as quoted in A Random Walk Down Wall Street, 9th Edition, by Burton Malkiel Check out all the new stuff at IFA.com. For example, this chart showing the correlation of one year s stock returns versus its previous year. Our Guru knows that a recession is coming, so sell. Yomomma2000 says I need to come out of my dark room and realize what I ve done (I ve proved the wisdom of the crowds in the stock market in show 94). Elaine says read The Creature from Jekyll Island. Here s a talk that G. Edward Griffin gave. It is definitely worth a listen. Any counter-story to this out there? Why is the Federal Reserve Banking System GOOD? Amazon.com: The Creature from Jekyll Island ISBN: 0912986395 ISBN-13: 9780912986395 I like the idea of issuing certificates of ownership for shares in GLD and allowing people to trade these like MONEY. Tool: I love outliner programs like Natara Bonsai. Anyone know of a full-featured one that is web-enabled? I d even pay Federal Reserve Points for it! Jim asks whether this would be a good time to invest in IFA Index Portfolio 100. Jim also asks how one might create a Index Portfolio 120 or 150 or 200. One could, but I doubt anyone has the stomach to accept the downside risk. Go to IFA.com and at the bottom of the page take a look at the Risk Reward Optimization chart. In the menu, click on item 10. Then click on Portfolio 100 and click on 1 Year. The MacBook Air was announced. OK, so no Apple Tablet. But I guess you really do need a keyboard after all. I d rather pay $899 than $1799 though. I ve been playing Rock Band and also Half Life 2 from the Orange Box. Keith recommended that I talk about any long term case studies of people who invested with Index Funds Advisors. IFA now has a sample client s return that is from an actual client. (Please use Internet Explorer) The amazing thing to note is THEIR CLIENT S RESULT WAS EXACTLY THE SAME AS THE PORTFOLIO 70 S BENCHMARK. Dennis wants to know how to get started in investing in an index fund portfolio. For continued guidance, I recommend reading the Diehards forum. Just like passive investing beats active investing, so too does passive government beat active government. Let the free markets do the work, please! We don t need a temporary economic stimulus package. We need permanent government downsizing. I take a raw look a the results of the Lazy Portfolios for 2007. More later stay subscribed.
