Helen Garner's latest book is The Spare Room - the story of a woman named Helen whose terminally ill friend, Nicola, comes to stay with her for three weeks. Nicola is dying of cancer and in Melbourne to undergo alternative therapies at the less than reputable Theodore Institute.The book explores Helen's experience as Nicola's carer: the feelings of rage and frustration which exist alongside tender compassion and complete exhaustion.
