From the day Jill was born, Jeanne McDowell knew she was everthing she had hoped for in a daughter. Jeanne also knew virtually everyone she trusted -- her husband, her friends, her doctors -- would urge her to turn her back on the tiny warm bundle with the dark almond eyes. Jill Johnstonbaugh was born with Down Syndrome. For the past 48 years she has been her mother's dance partner, fellow game show fan and closest confidant. Now the child who everyone said would be a lifelong burden is helping to care for the mother who refused to leave her. Together, the two women try to reconcile themselves to the day, someday soon, to a final separation that is beyond their control.
