Description:
Sore throats are caused by many things. Most often, a virus (the same thing that causes colds). but bacteria can also cause a sore throat, as can smoking, GERD (reflux), and allergies. Antibiotics are only needed if the sore throat is caused by a particular type of bacteria called Strep. This can be determined with a simple test in the office. You can stop by our office and have the test done without the need for an appointment or a doctor’s visit. Mono (mononucleosis) is a viral infection. It will not be cured with antibiotics. One of the main signs of mono is a sore throat that lasts too long (longer than 10-days). You'll find more information about sore throats, Strep and Mono at FamilyDoctor.org. As always, the Center for Disease Control has good information on both Strep and Mono. Download MP3 file This podcast first aired on February 25, 2006.
