I saw them first at the place Jay was living a few years back, and since then I've seen them in a few appartments in NY. They seem to have made a comeback with the cool people :) (Yea, me.) hahaha
That said, about peter's pan. I've used these before. Mostly for camping. They work great over open flame. I had assumed these have almost entirely gone out of style since teflon, especially for home use, but I wonder if they've made a bit of a comeback.
Great wikipedia article on them, but it doesn't seem to answer my question about their popularity.
Oh, don't forget to dry the pan immediately after washing - drying the cast iron skillet is the one thing I use paper towels for since the black stuff comes off when you dry. Wet pans rust quickly.
