From : C'est le Toon
Re-editing techniques There are two main techniques for re-editing films: Manual re-editing Purchased film content is downloaded onto an editing work station hard drive and third-party editors manually re-edit the video and audio tracks, removing objectionable content. The re-edited version is then copied onto media (VHS or DVD) and made available for rental or purchase provided an original version has been purchased in correlation with the re-edited copy. Some manual re-edits are done by fans (see The Phantom Edit) to cut a film to their own -or their peers- specifications. Although the recent court ruling prohibits business from manually re-editing commercial movies, the law still allows for individuals to self censor and edit their own movies for personal use. Programmed re-editing Programmed re-editing occurs when software (such as that employed in a DVD player) is used to skip portions of the video and/or audio content on-the-fly according to pre-programmed instruction sets which are knowingly used by the consumer. From : C'est le Toon
When Is in-camera editting used most successfully? In-camera editing is more successful when you re filming an event that happens to follow a particular sequence anyway. For example, a sports event can all be filmed this way as it follows a sequence from beginning to end first half, second half etc. The problems associated with in-camera editing occur when you have people appearing in scenes and it s time for them to film a scene but they re not available. Therefore, unlike conventional film editing where, if someone s absent, you can go back and shoot their scenes later, with in-camera editing, you d have to wait until they were available before you could shoot your next scene.

 From : C'est le Toon
Dialogue Means Nothing People don t always express their inner thoughts to one another," said Hitchcock, "a conversation may be quite trivial, but often the eyes will reveal what a person thinks or needs. The focus of the scene should never be on what the characters are actually saying. Have something else going on. Resort to dialogue only when it s impossible to do otherwise. "In other words we don t have pages to fill, or pages from a typewriter to fill, we have a rectangular screen in a movie house, said Hitchcock.

 From : C'est le Toon
How to white balance digital video? The camera will have a white balence button which you must press down so that you can callibrate the white balence, then you must focus the camera on a white area where you will be shooting you footage. The easiest way is to focus in on a piece of white paper were you will be filming, then adjust the white balence dials until correct balence is met and set. This must be done each time you change light conditions.

 From : C'est le Toon
Audio mixing is used for sound recording, audio editing, and sound systems to balance the relative volume, frequency, and dynamic content of a number of sound sources. Typically, these sound sources are the different musical instruments in a band or vocalists, the sections of an orchestra, announcers and journalists, crowd noises, and so on. Another example is mixing two records together. Break beats are created by mixing between identical breaks. Often the end of one pre-recorded song is mixed into another so that the transition is seamless, which is done through beat-matching or beat-mixing, and possibly pitch control.

 From : C'est le Toon
Editing a movie can be referred to as tailoring a movie. Just as people don t want to wear ill-fitting clothes, similarly no viewer is ready to see an unedited movie. An unedited movie is not compact, brief or tight, so it does not lure the spectators. The art of editing a movie means arrangement of shots according to an understandable viewpoint so that the viewers can derive aesthetic pleasure. In cinema, generally two techniques are followed, viz., mise-en-scene and montage. Mise-en-scene refers to the composition part of movie making or in other words, whatever is being shot with the single switch-on of the camera till the single switch-off of the camera. Whereas, the editing style and technique are known as montage.

 From : C'est le Toon
(Unknown French footage) In 1953, the Dutch were once again confronted with the power of the sea. The colossal disaster happened on February the 1st. It was to be one of the biggest floods in the history of the Netherlands. Aside from the poor condition of the many dikes in the Delta area, the flood was largely due to an unfortunate combination of climatic circumstances. A hurricane moved towards the Netherlands, which, at that moment, had a high tide. The high tide was intensified by the hurricane's influence and in some places within the Netherlands, water began to run over the dikes. The flood disaster of 1953 eventually led to the understanding that the condition of the dikes needed to be improved at last. In August 1953, the Delta committee gave advice for the restoration of which dikes needed to be repaired most urgently: the dike of Schouwen and the moveable storm surge barrier in the Dutch IJssel Meanwhile, volunteers and dike workers worked to close the gaps in the dikes. Within a week, 30,000 volunteers had registered to help repair the dikes. The Ministry of Waterways and Public Works led the restoration works, which was financed by the government.

 From : C'est le Toon
You press a lever or rocker to zoom in or out. This lever controls the lens mechanism inside the camera. Usually, the harder you press on the lever the quicker the zoom. Some camcorders have only one zoom speed whereas others allow you to zoom manually by turning a ring on the lens. A zoom lens gives you the option of having both telephoto and wide-angle lens in one camera. You use the telephoto lens when you zoom in, bringing objects closer to you. There is less visible area around your subject, and distant objects are compressed. Zooming the lens out gives you the wide-angle shot and more of your subject and surrounding areas are visible. Depth perception is also changed, and the size and distance between objects is more pronounced.

 From : C'est le Toon
Amateur animation The popularity of sites such as YouTube, which allows members to upload their own movies for others to view, has created a growing number of what is often considered amateur computer animators. With many free utilities available and programs such as Windows Movie Maker, anyone with the tools can have their animation viewed by thousands. Many high end animation software is also available on a trial basis, allowing for educational and non-commercial development with certain restrictions. One way to create amateur animation is using the GIF format, which can be uploaded and seen on the web easily. To create the illusion of movement, an image is displayed on the computer screen then quickly replaced by a new image that is similar to the previous image, but shifted slightly. This technique is identical to how the illusion of movement is achieved with television and motion pictures. Computer animation is essentially a digital successor to the art of stop motion and frame-by-frame animation of 2D illustrations. For 2D vector animations, the rendering process is the key frame illustration process, while tweened frames are rendered as needed. For pre-recorded presentations, the rendered frames are transferred to a different format or medium such as film or digital video.

 From : C'est le Toon
Go shoot Armed with a camera, mics and your own ambition and imagination, you're about as free as a filmmaker can be. This is where guerrilla filmmaking really shines. Make sure you capture a variety of footage, to allow for maximum flexibility in the edit suite. Experiment and be creative with your angles. Get wide, medium and closeup shots to intersperse with your high- and low-angle shots. When grabbing B roll, force yourself to count to ten before moving onto the next shot. That may feel like an eternity in the moment, but it'll feel just right when it comes time to edit the footage.

 From : C'est le Toon
Bitburg is a city in the Eifel, near Trier. Bitburg has circa 14,112 citizens. The biggest company is the Bitburger Brauerei, one of the largest beer manufacturers in the world. Typecasting is the process by which an actor is strongly identified with a specific character, one or more particular roles, or characters with the same traits or ethnic grouping. Actors are selected for their roles either by a casting director, typically found in small productions, or, in larger productions such as motion pictures, a group referred to as central casting. Central casting often exhibits a pattern of placing an actor in subsequent similar character roles after his or her first success, especially if an actor is particularly well-received in that role by the audience or by critics.

 From : C'est le Toon
This museum is one of Amsterdam hidden treasures. Located off city centre in a beautiful old building in East Amsterdam (Amsterdam Oost), Tropenmuseum often remains forgotten, like an old collection of post stamps. However, if you are interested in other cultures, other countries and distant lands - do no miss it. Tropenmuseum exhibit is modern, fascinating on many levels and inspiring. Moreover - a great museum to visit with kids, it is like a journey to all exotic. A word of history Tropenmuseum has been created in 1864 in Haarlem, as the Colonial Museum and later (1910) moved to Amsterdam. After 1949, when a Dutch colony of Indonesia (former Dutch East Indies) became independent, the Museum became part of the Tropical Institute in Amsterdam, researching the life in distant countries, not necessarily primitive cultures simply different, than a Western tradition.

Formerly known as Leningrad Metro the system exhibits many typical Soviet designs and features exquisite decorations and artwork making it one of the most attractive and elegant metros in the world. Object animation is a form of stop motion animation that involves the animated movements of any non-drawn objects such as toys, blocks, dolls, etc. which are not fully malleable, such as clay or wax, and not designed to look like a recognizable human or animal character. Object animation is considered a different form of animation distinct from model animation and puppet animation, as these two forms of stop-motion animation usually use recognizable characters as their subjects, rather than just objects like static toy soldiers, or construction toys such as Tinker Toys, LEGO brand bricks (Brickfilm), etc. Object animation is often combined with other forms of animation, usually for a more realistic effect (e.g, Model Animation or Puppet Animation to add more complex movement or depth to the characters). For example; A toy car can be animated, but is more often animated with a character easily seen driving the car.

 From : C'est le Toon
Stock footage, and similarly, archive footage, library pictures and file footage are film or video footage that is not custom shot for use in a specific film or television program. Stock footage is of great use to filmmakers as it is far cheaper than shooting a needed scene. Stock footage can also be used to integrate news footage or notable figures into a film. Examples of stock footage * Moving images of cities and landmarks * Moving images of natural environment * Historical footage Stock footage is most often used in commercials when there is not enough money or time for production. More often than not these commercials are political or issue oriented in nature. Sometimes it can be used to composite moving images which create the illusion of having on-camera performers appear to be on location. B-roll is also another common term for stock footage and is used in reference to film making. Suppliers of stock footage fall into two categories; rights-managed and royalty-free. Many websites offer direct downloads of QuickTime clips, the standard now in use for NLE applications.

 From : C'est le Toon
Musical film The musical film is a film genre in which several songs sung by the characters are interwoven into the narrative. The songs are used to advance the plot or develop the film's characters. A subgenre of the musical film is the musical comedy, which includes a strong element of humour as well as the usual music, dancing and storyline. The musical film was a natural development of the stage musical. Typically, the biggest difference between film and stage musicals is the use of lavish background scenery which would be impractical in a theater.

 From : C'est le Toon
The Falkirk Wheel, named after the nearby town of Falkirk in central Scotland, is a rotating boat lift connecting the Forth and Clyde Canal with the Union Canal. The difference in the levels of the two canals at the wheel is 24 metres (79 ft), roughly equivalent to the height of an eight storey building. The wheel, which has an overall diameter of 35 metres (110 ft), consists of two opposing arms which extend 15 metres beyond the central axle, and which take the shape of a Celtic-inspired, double-headed axe. Two sets of these axe-shaped arms are attached about 25 metres (82 ft) apart to a 3.5 metres (11 ft) diameter axle. Two diametrically opposed water-filled caissons, each with a capacity of 80,000 imperial gallons (3.6 105 l/96,000 US gal), are fitted between the ends of the arms. These caissons always weigh the same whether or not they are carrying their combined capacity of 600 tonnes (590 LT/660 ST) of floating canal barges as, according to Archimedes' principle, floating objects displace their own weight in water, so when the boat enters, the amount of water leaving the caisson weighs exactly the same as the boat. This keeps the wheel balanced and so, despite its enormous mass, it rotates through 180 in five and a half minutes while using very little power. It takes just 22.5 kilowatts (30.2 hp) to power the electric motors, which consume just 1.5 kilowatt-hours (5.4 MJ) of energy in four minutes, roughly the same as boiling eight kettles of water. The wheel is the only rotating boat lift of its kind in the world, and is regarded as an engineering landmark for Scotland.

 From : C'est le Toon
The single-camera setup is a method of shooting films and television programs. A single camera either film or video is employed on the set and shots are often taken out of order. An alternate production method is the multiple-camera setup, which uses two or more cameras running simultaneously. As its name suggests, a production using the single-camera setup generally uses just one camera. (Additional cameras may be used simultaneously on occasion, usually in order to save time shooting a dialogue scene or to film a stunt that would be impractical to stage more than once.) Each of the various shots and camera angles are taken with the same camera which is moved and reset to get each shot or new angle. In addition the lighting set-up may be reset for each new camera set-up. By contrast the multicamera setup, with its multiple cameras, has the cameras arranged to take all of the different shots of the scene. Each camera of a multicamera setup covers its own angle of the scene and is switched-to in order to switch the perspective to a new camera angle. The single-camera setup gives the director more control over each shot, but is more time-consuming and expensive than multiple-camera. The choice of single-camera or multiple-camera setups is made separately from the choice of film or video. That is, either setup can be shot in either film or video. However, multiple-camera setups shot on video can be switched "live to tape" during the performance, while multiple-camera setups shot on film still require that the various camera angles be edited together later. The single-camera setup originally developed during the birth of the classical Hollywood cinema in the 1910s and has remained the standard mode of production in the cinema. In television, however, a multiple-camera setup is just as common.

 From : C'est le Toon
A nature documentary is a documentary film about animals, plants, or other non-human living creatures, usually concentrating on film taken in their natural habitat. Such programmes are most frequently made for television, particularly for public broadcasting channels, but some are also made for the cinema. Wildlife and natural history films have boomed in popularity and have become one of modern society's most important sources of information about the natural world. Yet they have been largely ignored by film and television critics and scholars. Most programmes or series focus on a particular species, ecosystem or scientific idea (such as evolution). Although most take a scientific and educational approach, some anthropomorphise their subjects or present animals purely for the viewer's pleasure. Although almost all have a human presenter, the role varies widely, ranging from explanatory voiceovers to extensive interaction or even confrontation with animals.

 From : C'est le Toon
Art film An art film (also called an art cinema , art movie , or art house film ) is a typically serious, noncommercial, independently made film that is aimed at a niche audience, rather than a mass audience. Film critics and film studies scholars typically define an art film using a ...canon of films and those formal qualities that mark them as different from mainstream Hollywood films. [ Film scholar David Bordwell claims that "art cinema itself is a [film] genre, with its own distinct conventions." Art film producers usually present their films at specialty theatres (repertory cinemas, or in the US "arthouse cinemas") and film festivals. The term "art film" is much more widely used in the United States than in Europe, where the term "art film" is more associated with "auteur" films and "national cinema" (e.g., German national cinema).

 From : C'est le Toon
Standard 8 The standard 8 mm film format was developed by the Eastman Kodak company during the Great Depression and released on the market in 1932 to create a home movie format that was less expensive than 16 mm. The film spools actually contain a 16 mm film with twice as many perforations along each edge than normal 16 mm film, which is only exposed along half of its width. When the film reaches its end in the takeup spool, the camera is opened and the spools in the camera are flipped and swapped and the same film is exposed along the side of the film left unexposed on the first loading. During processing, the film is split down the middle, resulting in two lengths of 8 mm film, each with a single row of perforations along one edge, thereby fitting four times as many frames in the same amount of 16 mm film. Common length film spools allowed filming of about 3 minutes to 4.5 minutes at 12, 15, 16 and 18 frames per second. Kodak ceased selling standard 8 mm film in the early 1990

 From : C'est le Toon
Like many of you, I have been struggling with Apple's video software products strategy. I sort of understand the switch to the new iMovie '08 but found that it lacks features that I hold dear, such as slow motion and sound manipulation, and is a difficult transition for us old iMovie users. It is fast but, for me, not as fast as iMovie 6, which I have learned to use quite efficiently. But, knowing Apple, I realize that iMovie 6 (and earlier) will not be supported by a future version of OS X so is probably a dead end.

 From : C'est le Toon
Quality You can push your camcorder a little further if you spend time (and money) on properly lighting your scene. You'll never be able to compete with the quality of 35mm, but you will get better images than if you just point and shoot. Obviously the most key thing to focus your lighting on is your subject. But for overall image quality, you should also light your backgrounds appropriately. You might also find it a lot easier if you turn off the auto-exposure and auto-focus functions on your camcorder and do them manually - particularly if you are tilting/panning or moving the camera. If your camera does not allow manual exposures/focus, then you are making life extremely difficult for yourself and should really consider upgrading to one that does.

 From : C'est le Toon
Walla This article is about a sound effect. In American radio, film, and television, walla is a sound effect imitating the murmur of a crowd in the background. A group of actors brought together in the post-production stage of film production to create this murmur is known as a walla group. According to one story, walla received its name during the early days of radio, when it was discovered that having several people repeat the sound walla in the background was sufficient to mimic the indistinct chatter of a crowd. Nowadays, walla actors make use of real words and conversations, often improvised, tailored to the languages, speech patterns, and accents that might be expected of the crowd to be mimicked. Walla is called rhubarb in the UK and rabarreber in Holland, perhaps in part reflecting the varying textures of crowd noise in the different countries.

 From : C'est le Toon
In film, an insert is a shot of part of a scene as filmed from a different angle and/or focal length from the master shot. Inserts cover action already covered in the master shot, but emphasize a different aspect of that action due to the different framing. An insert is different from a cutaway in that the cutaway is of action not covered in the master shot. There are more exact terms to use when the new, inserted shot is another view of actors: close-up, head shot, knee shot, two shot. So the term "insert" is often confined to views of objects--and body parts, other than the head. Thus: CLOSE-UP of the gunfighter, INSERT of his hand quivering above the holster, TWO SHOT of his friends watching anxiously, INSERT of the clock ticking. Often inserts of this sort are done separately from the main action, by a second-unit director using stand-ins. Inserts and cutaways can both be vexatious for directors, as care must be taken to preserve continuity by keeping the objects in the same relative position as in the main take, and having the lighting the same.
