From : BayTaper.com
I recently had the pleasure of photographing and recording the Dan Zemelman Quartet live at the Red Poppy Art House on August 15, 2008. The group featured Dan on piano, Fred Randolph on bass, Erik Jekabson on trumpet and flugelhorn, and Sean Hutchinson on drums. The band has been rehearsing for some upcoming recording sessions lately, so they were playing pretty tight, but it s worth mentioning that Sean was actually subbing for their usual drummer Alan Hall although it s not really a bad thing when your sub is the drummer for New Monsoon, even if he did have to sight read all night, heh. I d also like to thank Dan and the guys for letting me share a couple of live tracks from their performance that night. So enjoy the music! From : BayTaper.com
It s been a long wait since my last post, but it s been well worth it on multiple fronts. First, I m pleased to be able to share a few brand new tracks and photos from an amazing performance by 8 Legged Monster live at what turned out to be one of the final shows at Pearl s on July 13, 2008. We re sorry to see this venue disappear from the scene, but at least these guys (and many others) helped it go out with a bang during its final weeks. Besides featuring some great music, this post also celebrates the completion of a major new website redesign for BayTaper.com. We ve upgraded our look and feel, made the interface more user-friendly, and added an audio archives page and a slick new random slideshow generator that pulls from a pool of nearly 300 photos and audio tracks. So, if you haven t explored the depths of our website in a while, make sure to take another look! From : Laughing Squid
guest post by mikl-em Just when you thought that weird Anti-Drug PSAs were a thing of the 70 s Tonight I encountered the above banner ad (I split the animation into 2 images). And yes, although the guy above looks like he s out of the 1970 s this is a current ad. But wait Teen Brain Guide ? That seemed kinda odd. So I clicked through. And it only got weirder. The site is by Partnership for a Drug-Free America which I had at least heard of before. So I hoped it would start to make more sense. No such luck. It s really an odd site, confusing as to even what the point is. It talks about some odd ways your kid may be behaving but then seem to say these may NOT indicate your child is on drugs. The site claims to have the science in a nutshell that explains all of this wacky mysterious behavior. Awesome!! Cuz it was getting confusing. But if you want said nut-encased info, the link they offer you leads to a registration form: Hey now! That s a tactic that porn sites (so I hear) or other folks trying to sell something or get my personal information use. It s weird to bump into on a site that s supposed to be providing a vital public health service. Why won t they just tell me? Isn t it in everybody s interest for parents to better understand their kids? What gives? And there s the video, shown on the right above, of a doctor talking to parents and children about drugs. This also hints at science without ever actually offering up any. And when the medical professional appears in front of an issue of Teen Brain Times it kinda undercuts the credibility. I half expect the credit to read Dr. Troy McClure, University of Springfield. Oh, and I forgot to note that the form is accompanied by an option to receive the latest information and new parenting tools from the Partnership for a Drug-Free America. Which is checked by default, so you d be opted-in to the PDFA tool-of-the-month club. Weird? Is it just me? They use a relatively interesting art style (kinda like old Mad Magazine meets Maurice Sendak with a little Rug Rats thrown in), so that at least comes off well. But wasn t there supposed to be some brain science here somewhere? I guess if I registered they d fulfill the promise to help me: Gain insights into teen brain development and apply your new knowledge of normal teenage behavior to real life. Sweet. What s real life ? And what does this have to do with Mr Tinted-shades in the banner ad and how a job in computing makes you a grownup??!! I mean I know that one s not true. If you are brave enough to actually click through (I m not paranoid??) and get details of the post-registration experience, feel free to let us all know in the comments. I just think it s creepy. And there s more, I found another PDFA site that s even hipper than this one, check out the with-it lingo, you squares: Got 5 minutes? It really could rock your world! Okay, that’s likely over the top, but it certainly can answer your questions and benefit every aspect of your relationship with your teen — and their health! You ll find that straight talk at Decoder: Breaking down teen culture, substance abuse, and parenting. Breaking it down!! In the good way, I suppose. Turns out that the Partnership for a Drug-Free America are the fine folks responsible for the This is Your Brain on Drugs ad from the 80 s. It was 21 years ago, and thereby hangs a series of flashbacks, starting with the original commercial Then in 1998 Rachael Leigh Cook updated the egg-fryingpan relationship: Today the PDFA, understanding the importance of their place in pop culture, have a page dedicated to the history of their egg-as-brain metaphor, it includes this priceless tidbit about how sound design leads to appreciation: When the original idea for the “Fried Egg” spot was presented to the Partnership’s Creative Review Committee, it received mix reviews. It wasn’t until the voiceover and “sizzle” sound effects were added that it came to life and was truly appreciated! Truly. And the Fried Egg spot was just one ally amongst the coalition of media mobilized to fight The War on Drugs . It was and is a war that lends itself nicely to a highlight reel, so below are key clips from the battlefield. Nancy Reagan famously chaired the Just Say No campaign. On the Reagan Foundation page they refer to it as Mrs. Reagan s Crusade . Here s the iconic ad from that campaign: Then of course there was RAD (Rock Against Drugs get it?). This campaign dates back to that bizarre and troubling time in our nation s history when MTV showed music videos. Thank goodness that s over, huh? The RAD stable of spokes-rockers leaned rather heavily on the Metal stars, so here are two prime examples. Gene Simmons You believe that crap? is, in my opinion, the best anti-drug message ever. Because it s cool. Which may be the wrong reason. But I have to say that, looking back now, it has remained damn cool which is more than we can say for Gene himself these days: Vince Neil I m on top of everything I do , I bet you are Vince: As a bonus, for anyone who is absolutely hooked on drug PSAs at this point, here s a pretty funny round up of the Top 11 funniest nostalgic drug PSAs. Somehow he doesn t include the Gene Simmons one, but there are a lot of other great ones. From : Laughing Squid
guest post by mikl-em So first off, I guess it was Wil Wheaton s birthday on Tuesday (he s so shy about it). He s a square 36 years old Happy Birthday! In case there was any question that Star Trek (including Wheaton s The Next Generation) continues to hold sway over all of geekdom, the following pix from last week s Comic-con convention should clear that up. There seems to have been good representation across its many incarnations (6 series and 726 episodes in all). Since I couldn t make it to San Diego this year, I am instead window-surfing as it were, watching everybody else s geeky good time via Flickr. Yes, I m jealous of Eddie. Here s a sampling of Trekkie treats I ve found Looks like Geordi has gone jazz on us Tuvok and Chekov talk about their shared consonants But keep in mind, not everyone in a starfleet outfit is legit I think any of these 3 have actually ever been on the bridge of a starship: Ditto on this lineup, they re packin Razrs not Communicators (and definitely not Tricorders) Wheaton himself shares this clip of Riker (aka number 1 aka Jonathan Frakes) favoring a presumably late-night crowd with a rendition of Ain t Misbehavin photos by chiquitadequeso, Timmy Farol, viciouswargoose, fathom216, Jason Mouratides video by R. From : Laughing Squid
Rackspace, the data center where we host our servers, is going public. Their IPO auction website just went live today. The IPO is expected to take place the week of August 8th, 2008, where they will be auctioning off 1,500,0000 Shares Common Stock at a price range of $12.00-$16.00. Rackspace is a great company and has served us well for almost a decade (we are one of their oldest customers, hosting their since 1999). We wish them all the best with their upcoming IPO. From : Andrew Mager
It s always an honor to be in the south bay. Last year s TechCrunch party in Menlo Park was one of my first experiences being away from the city where the tech presence is enhanced. This year was even better. Special thanks for Michael Arrington for inviting us to his event and being a great host. Julia Allison and Non Society When I first got in, I was very anxious to see Julia Allison and have her sign my copy of Wired. She is the cover girl this month. I had to video tape her signing it. She said it was the first magazine she s signed. I am a fan of Julia s because she is an outrageous Georgetown Hoya who loves new media. She and her two friends are doing a lifestreaming project where they write short snippets on a horizontal-scrolling blog thingy. I don t know how else to explain it, but it s entertaining. Chamillionaire There were plenty of other superstars in attendance last night, Chamillionaire. This H-town rapper has been on top of his game when it comes to the web. His website is great, and he puts out as many new freestyles as Lil Wayne these days. He was talkin about using OpenID on his site for logins. Shira Lazar I met KNBC (Los Angeles) Channel 4 anchor Shira Lazar. First question I asked her was are you on Twitter? . Her site is The Pop Report and she writes about anything that comes to mind. She shares sites that she likes, and posts photos from events she attends. Kinda like what I m doing right now. Twinkle Oh yea, there were also new media product demos going on. Here is a cool 404 page for the iPhone/iPod app Twinkle. Pandora Even as a direct competitor to one of the CBS Interactive brands, I can say that I really love Pandora. It might be my favorite place to discover new music. It requires no work except entering an artist that you like. Let them do the rest. Pandora was the DJ, just like last year. The music setup was perfect. I don t need to explain how awesome Pandora is just use it. Tokbox The best video demo I saw last night was Tokbox. It reminded me of a mixture between Skype and UStream. Plista Imagine a service that would allow you to rate movies on a site like Netflix and have it recommend other movies to you based on what others have said with similar rankings to you. This social recommendation idea is already in the works with Plista. Rafe Needleman wrote a great post about it on Webware. iLick The world s first lickable iPhone app. Patrick needs to buy iphonilingus.com. Blurb Blurb allows you to make books! I ve already made one actually. Medialets and Facebook Rana (center) from Medialets and Randi (right) from Facebook were also in attendance. Medialets is way for iPhone app developers to figure out how to monetize. They also do extensive statistical analysis on the growing mobile market. Other memorable demos Kaboodle is a service where you can rate products that you like and recommend them to a friend. I think it s mainly for girls because most of the site has fashion items. But it looked cool. Regator is a perfect news site for lazy people. They go out and find the most interesting blogs for you to read. But how do you know what is interesting? Is this like Digg? From : Laughing Squid
The new Radiohead music video for House of Cards , directed by James Frost, was created entirely using data visualizations without traditional cameras or lights. House of Cards has been released as an open source project hosted on Google Code. No cameras or lights were used. Instead two technologies were used to capture 3D images: Geometric Informatics and Velodyne LIDAR. Geometric Informatics scanning systems produce structured light to capture 3D images at close proximity, while a Velodyne Lidar system that uses multiple lasers is used to capture large environments such as landscapes. In this video, 64 lasers rotating and shooting in a 360 degree radius 900 times per minute produced all the exterior scenes. Here s the making of video for House of Cards . From : On Lisa Rein's Radar
Hey guys, time to put good taste aside this weekend and come to the premiere of the comedy-horror flick I'm in - and I sing the theme song for - premiering this weekend in San Francisco. I'll be there for Friday night's 7:30 show! Hope to see you there! Don't come if you're squeamish. Like, seriously. It's a gross flick :-) Funny as hell. Arguably more funny than gross, but I won't mince words. Here's the poop from the directors (Rick Popko and Dan West): SF world premiere of "RetarDEAD," a feature-length horror/comedy from the creators of "Monsturd." The premiere will be held at San Francisco's Victoria Theatre Located at: 2961 16th Street (BART accessible! - 16th Street Station) San Francisco, CA 94103 (415) 863-7576 Tix are $10, and advanced tix can be purchased online at: http://www.victoriatheatre.org/calendar.htm Showtimes are: July 11 & 12 (Friday and Saturday): 7:00 p.m. & 9:30 p.m. July 13 (Sunday): 5:30 & 7:30 p.m. Important: Limited edition barf bags will be handed out to the first 500 ticket holders! The filmmakers will be on hand to host a Q&A after each show. The trailer and a Creative Commons MP3 of the end theme song can be found here: http://www.4321films.com/retardead/index.html Story synopsis: Evil has come to the Butte County Institute of Special Education, and its students will never be the same. After surviving a ferocious battle with his own monstrous creation, Dr. Stern returns to continue his horrible research in this blood-drenched sequel to the cult hit "Monsturd." Armed with a fatal hyper-intelligence serum, the mad doctor transforms a quiet community into an army of flesh-eating zombies. It's a showdown of limb-chopping, head-bursting proportions as Stern's nemesis, F.B.I. agent Susan Hannigan, and the local sheriff's department take on the zombie plague in the ultimate battle royale.

 From : Laughing Squid
guest post by mikl-em A friend and I at work started talking about weird speakers, so here s the results of a couple hours of surfing and gawking. First let s start with the affordable, I noticed these on a Korean site, but actually Scott has covered them before: . To paraphrase Monty Python: These are the biggest earbuds you ll ever see! They cost like $50. Let s move quickly on Then there s iPond. Yes, of course, it s a portable aquarium-speaker . What else? Best line: The iPod speaker that comes with built-in tuna . Somehow Scott hadn t blogged this before, I am incredibly grateful. The Ice Cream Sundae speakers will run you $1250 per pair sweet deal! From SG Custom Sound who carry a bunch of wild designs. Now let s go waaay upmarket The Nautilus from B s Cephalopodonous so it gets points for that! The Muon speakers from KEF were designed by Ross Lovegrove, are made of aluminum, weigh 253 pounds, and are 7 tall see Engadget for more details. They had an incredible launch event for these at the Milan Furniture Fair 2007 check the video. They cost $140K and they only made 100 pairs. For some reason I can t find any of those pairs for sale on eBay at the moment. :(( And last to mention are the Grand Enigma, a one-of-a-kind set by Kharma, which cost $1,000,000. I won t even show you a picture cuz they are bigger than they are pretty. And you can t have them anyway. Poking around on this theme I found several pages dedicated to cataloging Weird Speakers, enjoy: freshome.com recently posted 17 Cool Speakers Designs that Look Better than They Sound from CNET Asia from HigherFi.com Audio Junkies 15 sexiest speakers See Previously: 500 XL, Desktop Speakers in the Shape of Giant iPod Earbuds photos by (in order) old valve mic, tnarik, My Friend., SG Custom Sound, X Ge and kaitlin_lo Related Posts9th Annual How Weird Street FaireWeird America Covers The VloggiesHow Weird Street Faire: Weirdo de MayoWeird TV Nominated For 3 Webby AwardsWeird AmericaShareThis

 From : BayTaper.com
After a much-needed three-week vacation in Europe (more on that later), BayTaper.com is back in action (albeit a bit jet-lagged). Just before June and I left on our trip, we had the pleasure of hosting several members of the phenomenal unconducted chamber orchestra A Far Cry during the first date of their inaugural west coast tour. Our good friend Megumi Stohs, who is a graduate of the San Francisco Conservatory of Music, is our connection to the group. Many years ago, Megumi worked for June on occasion while attending the Conservatory, and we ve kept in touch during the time that followed her graduation. The group is based out of Boston, and is starting to turn heads in classical music circles on the East Coast, so I couldn t help but take advantage of this opportunity by offering to photograph and record their performance in the Koret Auditorium at the de Young Museum on May 15, 2008. The show was simply amazing, and the recording came out stellar. Best of all, they ve granted permission to share the first piece played that night, Arcangelo Corelli s Concerto Grosso in F major, Op.6 No.9 (1708), which you can listen to by clicking the Play Now link below. On this tour, the group featured Sharon Cohen, Andrew Eng, Jesse Irons, Jae Young Lee, Shaw Pong Liu, Monica Pegis, Megumi Stohs, Ashley Vandiver, and Liza Zurlinden on violin; Margaret Dyer, Jason Fisher, and Franklin Shaw on viola; Loewi Lin, Jeremiah Shaw, and Courtenay Vandiver on cello; and Karl Doty on Bass. You can learn more about the group at AFarCry.org, and you can keep abreast of their ongoing projects and performances by checking their blog, which is updated regularly.

 From : burntwire.tv
On Wednesday November 8th, a cargo ship hit the Bay Bridge and spilled 58,000 gallons of oil into the bay. After the recent oil spill, I went to Ocean Beach on the following Tuesday to see the aftermath. The beach looked pretty clean and it was a warm, sunny day, despite the ecological tragedy. It sounds like a lot of the damage could have been averted if they had acted to clean up the spill sooner. Empty green waves like these should serve to remind us how great a gift we are given to live next to the ocean, and that we all need to do our part to protect it. Shot in 1080i HDV.
