How to use and customize the Mefeedia “My Channel” widget

tagged , and

There are some cool ways to share your Personal Mefeedia Channel on your personal blog or website. It is quite easy to customize, so here is a brief tutorial on how to to that:

My Channel “What I’m Watching” Widget

my_widget.jpgThis widget shows the latest 10 video thumbnails that are in your channel, which updates automatically as new videos come in from the feeds that you are subscribed to. This enables you to display the latest videos that you are interested in directly on your blog or anywhere you like (as long as it supports Javascript!). Each of the thumbnails goes to play the video itself. In addition, people can click on the links above and below the video thumbs to view your profile on Mefeedia. It is a great way to keep updated and share with your blog/vlog viewers what other videos you like.

Using the Widget
It’s a piece of cake to use and completely customizable! Just follow these 4 steps:

  1. Login/Sign-in: Go to the Mefeedia sign-in page and sign in (or register if you haven’t already done so).
  2. Subscribe to Feeds: Discover the vlogs/feeds that you like (via browsing Guides, searching the feeds directory, exploring user profiles to see what they like (and even adding them as friends, viewing recommendations, and more) and click on the “Subscribe” button next to the feed name at the top of the feed page.
  3. Click on “My Channel” in the main navigation - this will bring you to the latest videos in your personal channel.
  4. Copy the code from the text box on the left sidebar of the “My Channel” page and paste it into your website or blog - i.e. wherever you want to display the widget.

You are done! Of course, you may want to customize the widget. Here’s how:

Increasing/Decreasing the number of videos displayed
In the code that you have to copy and paste, change the “10.js” to a number you would like to show, up to 50 videos! For example, to decrease the number of videos displayed from ten to six change “10.js” to “6.js”. To show more, change “10.js” to “20.js”. It tops out at displaying 50 videos.

Changing the Look and Feel
CSS controls the look and feel of the widget. If you know css, then have at it with the “vlogroll” class! If you don’t know CSS, here are some sample ways to customize - just replace the <style> and </style> HTML tags and everything in between with the code below the customization you would like:
Show 1 thumb per row instead of 2 and reduce the width to 100px wide:

    <style>
    .vlogroll {padding:0px; width:100px; border:1px dotted #999;}
    .vlogroll img {padding:3px; border:1px dotted #fff;}
    .vlogroll img:hover {padding:2px; border:2px solid;}
    </style>

    Horizontal widget instead of vertical (width of 470 below will show 5 thumbnails of videos per row):

      <style>
      .vlogroll {padding:0px; width:470px; border:1px dotted #999;}
      .vlogroll img {padding:3px; border:1px dotted #fff;}
      .vlogroll img:hover {padding:2px; border:2px solid;}
      </style>

      Change the background to black instead of white, and link text to white:

        <style>
        .vlogroll {padding:0px; width:200px; border:1px dotted #999; background-color:#000000;}
        .vlogroll img {padding:3px; border:1px dotted #fff;}
        .vlogroll img:hover {padding:2px; border:2px solid;}
        .vlogroll a {color:#FFFFFF;}
        </style>

        There are a lot more customizations you can play with as far as CSS, so have some fun and enjoy!See more in:, ,
