FMARS (the Flashline Mars Arctic Research Station), a first of its kind, four-month duration Mars mission simulation, launches any day now Haughton Impact Crater on Devon Island, Nunavut, Canada, in the North Pole.
Starting in early May and running through the end of August, the 7-person FMARS 2007 crew will conduct a sustained program of geology and microbiology field exploration while operating under many of the same constraints as a group of astronauts would during an expedition to Mars. They’ll be testing various field exploration techniques in an attempt to learn more about what will work best when we go there for real.
The crew will return and give a full report of their activities at the 10th International Mars Society Convention, which will be held August 30-September 2, 2007 at UCLA.
There’s even an FMARS Blog where you can keep track of the crew’s latest activity, and communicate with them by leaving comments.
We’ll be covering the FMARS mission the whole time right here!
The FMARS announcement was part of this year’s CHI 2007 conference. CHI 2008 will be in Florence, Italy.
