FMARS: Why Send Men Instead of Robots?

Robots wouldn’t be able to make snow margaritas! That’s why!

F-XI LDM Video Log Episode 1 - Devon Island Margaritas!

In this movie, the crew goes out to get snow for their margaritas.

The cast in order of appearance:

James Harris
(long beard)

Ryan Kobrick
(also holding the camera)

Melissa Battler
(glasses and cap)

Paul Graham
(goatee)

Of course, they won’t be going out for any snow powered margaritas once the mission actually begins. All activity outside of the shelter will have to take place while wearing their EVA (Extra Vehicular Activity) Suits. These are pressurized to simulate the weight and bulk of the atmosphere on the surface of Mars. Field research in the suits will help them learn about the challenges.

It’s very difficult for a geologist to perform their regular tasks in these suits. Even simple activities such as labeling a bag or handling a PDA can be extremely challenging.

All this begs the question, “Why not just send robots to pick up rocks?” Well, according to Chief Scientist/Computer Scientist Kim Binstead, robots aren’t able to do a good enough job. “Robots can’t improvise like humans,” she explained. “They can’t change a plan, adjust a travel route, or make an impromptu tool. And a robot will be working with 10 year old data.”

She explained all the details in a live interview at CHI 2007. (Video of this on the way!)
