San Francisco’s Exploratorium is a must-see for visitors and a staple of life for those of us who grew up in the SF Bay Area. Now there are a series of Second Life Islands constituting an in-world Exploratorium, and I was lucky enough to spend an evening with the curator a few nights ago.
In this clip, Splo Curator Patio Plasma shows me one of the exhibits. This exhibit is typical of the great optical illusion exhibits of the Exploratorium in meatspace.

Robert J. Rothfarb and Paul Doherty have written a paper that explains some of the thinking behind Splo Island, and its brethren islands:
Creating Museum Content and Community in Second Life. The team presented it at the Museums and the Web 2007 conference earlier this year.
There’s also a wiki and another page of great links that Paul Donahue put together where you can learn more.
