Censorship and choices .
A few weeks back the topic of porn came up on the videoblogging yahoo group. There was a bit of discussion about how best to handle explicit video in the vlogsphere.
We have 24 feeds that have been flagged by us a ‘Potential Adult Content’. We replaced the thumbnails that we thought were showing a bit more than we wanted some of our more sensitive users to be shown with a warning image.
Our intent was to do the best thing for our users and we may have done the opposite. The last thing we want to do is be censors, but I guess we may have done just that. It’s really tough to make a work safe place for people to browse the directory and not exclude feeds that show adult content.
Since this is a process that requires refining and discussions I will be spending the next day or two unflagging the feed previously flagged as potential adult content and trying to find more ’safe for work’ thumbnails for the feeds that have been flagged.
Hopefully with the help ofthe videoblogging community we can come up with something that will work for everyone.
